If your WhatsApp is hacked in Singapore, register your number on WhatsApp again using the SMS code, check Settings > Linked Devices and log out unknown sessions, then turn on two-step verification. Warn your contacts through another channel. The Singapore Police Force has issued several advisories in 2025-2026 about takeovers using fake "voting" links, an OTP "sent by mistake" story and SMS phishing. If money is involved, call your bank and report to the police. You can also call the ScamShield Helpline on 1799.

#How do I recover a hacked WhatsApp in Singapore?

  1. Open or reinstall WhatsApp and register your number with the SMS code. This logs out the other phone (WhatsApp FAQ).
  2. Check Linked Devices and log out anything unknown. The SPF specifically advises this (SPF).
  3. Turn on two-step verification.
  4. If asked for a PIN you didn't set, you may need to wait before you can register again.
  5. Warn your contacts not to send money or codes.

#What scams does the SPF warn about?

  • "OTP sent by mistake": a contact asks you to forward a code they say they sent to you by accident (SPF, 12 Mar 2026).
  • Voting for a competition: links that ask you to "vote" for someone's child in a dance competition (SPF, 10 Feb 2026).
  • SMS phishing variants that lead to account takeover (SPF, 12 Nov 2025).
  • Impersonation for money: the SPF reported at least 52 cases since 1 April 2026 with at least $46,000 lost, often involving PayNow QR codes for Razer or Grab top-ups (SPF, 8 May 2026).
"Singapore WhatsApp takeovers often lead to impersonation of the owner asking contacts for PayNow transfers, a pattern Singapore Police Force has warned about. Reclaim the number through WhatsApp, warn contacts on another channel, and report through ScamShield or the police when money is involved." - Md Shariar Shanaz Shuvon, Founder, AwareXone

#Where do I report?

  • Police: make a report online or at a police station.
  • ScamShield: the helpline and resources for scam victims (ScamShield).
  • Your bank: call straight away if money was sent.

#What if I can't get back in?

  • Make sure you still control your SIM. Contact your telco if it was swapped.
  • Wait out any two-step PIN lock, then register again.
  • Contact WhatsApp support through the app.

#Which recovery scams should I avoid?

Anyone offering to "unlock" WhatsApp for a fee, fake WhatsApp support accounts, and anyone asking for your code or PIN.

#When is professional help useful?

For most personal WhatsApp accounts, you can recover yourself. Help may be useful for WhatsApp Business accounts with customer impact. SocialSafe by AwareXone works only through official channels, never asks for passwords or one-time codes, and doesn't promise outcomes. We reply within 5 hours between 9am and 11pm MYT (Singapore is on the same time zone). Singapore clients are quoted and billed in USD, with the fee confirmed after case review. See how a case review works on the SocialSafe by AwareXone WhatsApp account recovery page, or check pricing and the Trust Center.

#What evidence should I keep for a Singapore police report?

  • screenshots of the message or link that started the takeover (for example, a "voting" link or an OTP request);
  • the phone number or contact name that sent it;
  • times when you lost and regained access;
  • messages sent from your account to your contacts;
  • bank or PayNow transaction records if money moved.

Keep the original messages. Don't delete chats that show the scam.

#How should I warn my contacts?

The SPF's impersonation advisory describes scammers using hacked accounts to ask contacts for money, often by PayNow QR code (SPF). Tell your contacts by SMS, phone call or another app that your WhatsApp was taken over, and that any request for money, gift cards, top-ups or codes from your number should be ignored. Ask anyone who has already paid to call their bank and make a police report straight away. Once you have the account back, post a short status update confirming it's secure again.

#Step by step: check Linked Devices

  1. Open WhatsApp → Settings (or the three-dot menu) → Linked Devices.
  2. Review each listed session (web, desktop, other).
  3. Tap any session you don't recognise and choose "Log out".
  4. Then turn on two-step verification under Settings → Account.

The SPF specifically recommends checking Linked Devices and turning on two-step verification in its March 2026 advisory (SPF).

Ruse reported by SPFWhat to do
"Please send back the OTP I sent you by mistake"Never forward codes. Call the friend to check.
"Vote for my child in a competition"Don't log in through links. Votes don't need your WhatsApp code.
SMS with a link to "verify" your accountIgnore it. WhatsApp verification happens in the app.

#What should WhatsApp Business users in Singapore do?

If customers message your business number, post a notice on your website and other channels straight away. Tell customers you won't ask for PayNow transfers to new numbers or QR codes over WhatsApp. Once you've recovered the account, check the business profile, catalogue and quick replies for anything the hacker changed. Customers who paid should call their bank and make a police report.

In Singapore, report phishing that led to the takeover through ScamShield guidance and keep the original SMS or email that started the compromise.

After you regain the number, re-check linked business tools and remove unknown devices from WhatsApp linked-devices settings.
