Recover TikTok Without Your Phone Number: What Works

Lost the SIM or number on your TikTok account? For users in Malaysia: the routes TikTok offers without your old number, in the order worth trying them.

Short answer

Without your old number, TikTok cannot send you an SMS code, so try to get the number back from your mobile provider first. Then use any other login you set up, or a device still logged in. If nothing works, use friends verification or the Need more help form. TikTok reviews the request and makes the final decision.

Summary
  • If your phone number is gone, first ask your mobile provider whether it can put the same number on a replacement SIM, because that fixes the code problem at the source.
  • Next try every other way in that you set up: email, username and password, Apple or Google sign in, a passkey, or a device you are still logged in on.
  • If none work, TikTok offers friends verification from the Recover your account screen, then the Need more help form to reset your authentication method.
  • TikTok's support team reviews that request, so send one complete request, keep the reply inbox open and do not create a new account meanwhile.
  • Never give anyone your password, a code or a recovery code, never pay someone who promises to unlock the account, and accept that TikTok makes the final decision.

You signed up for TikTok with your phone number years ago. Since then the SIM was lost, the prepaid line lapsed, or you moved to a new number. Now TikTok wants a code sent to that old number, and you have no way to receive it.

The short answer: get the old number back if you can, because that solves everything else. If you cannot, try every other login you ever set up, then TikTok's friends verification, then the "Need more help?" form to reset how you verify. This guide walks through those routes in order, what TikTok will ask you for, and what to set up afterwards so a lost SIM never locks you out again.

#Can You Recover a TikTok Account Without Your Phone Number?

Often, yes, but not by changing the number from the login screen. TikTok's email and phone number page says that to change the phone number on an account, both the old and the new number must be active and verified, because codes go to both. So without the old line, you need a different route: another login method you set up, a device that is still logged in, friends verification, or TikTok's identity check through "Need more help?". TikTok reviews that last request and decides, and some accounts are not restored.

If your number still works but codes simply are not arriving, that is a different problem. Our guide to a TikTok code that never arrives covers number format, filters and signal.

#Step 1: Try to Get the Old Number Back

If the number was lost with the SIM but never cancelled, it may still belong to you. Contact your mobile provider and ask whether it can issue a replacement SIM on the same number. Expect to prove the line is registered to you, so bring your identity document. This is the cleanest fix, because once texts arrive again, TikTok works as normal and you can then add an email and change the number properly.

A prepaid line that went unused for long enough may already be terminated and handed to someone else. TikTok's page on recycled mobile numbers says carriers reassign numbers after a period of inactivity, and that TikTok does not control that. If that has happened, skip to the next step. Our guide to old numbers that were given to someone else explains what that means for every account tied to the line.

#Step 2: Use Any Other Login You Set Up

Your phone number is only one of several ways in. Go through each of these before you ask TikTok for help, because a working login skips the identity check entirely.

  • Email or username. On the login screen choose "Use phone / email / username", then Email / Username. TikTok's reset password page lets you reset the password by email if one is linked.
  • Forgotten which email you used. TikTok's page on how it uses your email and phone number says you can look up all your login methods by entering a linked email address or phone number on the account recovery screen.
  • Apple, Google or another social login. TikTok says that if you joined with another account, you reset the password from that platform, not from TikTok. Recover that account first if you have lost it too.
  • A passkey. TikTok's passkey page says the private key is stored in iCloud Keychain, Google Password Manager or another supported password manager, so you can log in from any device signed in to the same Apple ID or Google account.
  • A device that is still logged in. Check old phones, a tablet, a laptop browser or a smart TV. If one is still in, do not log out.

One catch: if you turned on 2-step verification, resetting the password from a new phone shows an "unrecognized device" error. TikTok's reset password page says this stops others resetting your password even with your email or phone, and that the fix is to reset from a device you used before, or to recover the account.

#If You Are Still Logged In Somewhere

A logged-in device is the most useful thing you can have, so use it before the session ends. You still cannot swap the number without the old line, but you can make sure the number stops being your only way in.

  1. Go to Settings and privacy, then Account, then Account Information, and add an email address you control. TikTok sends a code to that email to confirm it.
  2. Under Account, tap Passkey and set one up, so you can log in with your face, fingerprint or phone PIN later.
  3. Under Security & permissions, then Manage devices, remove any device you do not recognise.
  4. Write down the username exactly as it appears, and take a dated screenshot of the profile and the Account Information screen. You may need both for a recovery request.

#Step 3: Ask Friends to Verify

If you cannot log in or reset the password, TikTok lets friends you are connected with on TikTok vouch for you. Its account safety page describes the steps.

  1. Open the TikTok app and tap the Help button at the top.
  2. Tap "Recover your account", enter your username or linked email and tap Search. If the number is still linked, you can search by phone number instead.
  3. On your account page, tap "Can't access these?" at the bottom, then Ask friends to verify, then Start.
  4. Tap Share and send the instructions to your friends through another app.

TikTok says at least 2 friends are needed, they only have a limited time to respond, and you can only send requests a limited number of times a day. Your friends see the request in the Security & permissions section of their own settings. Tell them in advance to look there, so the window does not pass. If you pass, TikTok logs you in.

#Step 4: Reset Your Authentication Method

When no other route works, TikTok checks your identity itself. There are two entry points in the app, and both lead to a review by TikTok's support team.

  • From the login screen, tap "Forgot password?", then Recover account, and follow the steps. TikTok's reset password page says you may be asked for account information such as your registered email, phone number or previous passwords.
  • Tap "Need more help?" and fill in the form. TikTok's email and phone number page describes this form for people who can no longer reach their sign-up email, and says that once it verifies your identity, you can reset your authentication method.

If you are logged out and the app does not offer either option, TikTok's web Report a problem form has an "Account access / security" topic. TikTok's forgot password page also lists an in-app path for logged-in users under Report a problem, then Account and profile, then Login.

#What to Gather Before You Fill In the Form

The form is your one clear chance to show the account is yours. Collect these first, so you send one complete request instead of several half-finished ones.

  • The exact username, and the profile link if you can open it from someone else's phone.
  • The old phone number in full, with the country code, and roughly when you added it.
  • Any email address that may be on the account, and an email you can reply from now.
  • Previous passwords you remember, even partly.
  • The phone model you usually logged in from, and roughly when you created the account.
  • Dated screenshots: the login error, the profile, any TikTok emails, and receipts for coins or promotions if you bought any.
  • For a business or creator account, anything that links you to it publicly, such as the same handle on your website or other social profiles.

#Mistakes That Make It Harder

  • Making a new account with the same identity while you wait. It splits your followers and your evidence across two profiles, and the new one cannot use the old number anyway.
  • Buying a "verified" number or account from a seller to get past the screen.
  • Letting the reply email lapse, or using a work address you might lose.
  • Logging out of the last device that is still signed in.
  • Asking a friend to log in with your details "to check". Friends verification happens on their own account, never on yours.

#Recovery Agents Who Ask for Codes

People locked out of TikTok are an easy target. Someone in the comments or a Telegram group offers to "unlock" the account, asks for a fee, then asks for a code or your password. TikTok's phishing guidance says it will never contact you to ask for your password, verification codes or other sensitive information.

  • A typical BM line: "Bagi saya kod enam digit, saya boleh unlock akaun TikTok abang hari ni." (Give me the six-digit code, I can unlock your TikTok today.)
  • A typical Chinese line: "只要把验证码发给我,我帮你找回账号,先付押金。" (Just send me the code and I will recover the account, pay a deposit first.)
  • Red flags: a promise of a fixed result, payment before anyone has looked at the case, any request for a code, password or recovery code, and claims of contacts inside TikTok.

Legitimate help works differently. It starts with a look at your situation, uses only TikTok's own forms and in-app routes, never asks for your password, codes or recovery codes, and is honest that TikTok makes the decision and that some accounts do not come back.

If you already paid someone or shared a code and then lost money, the government's NSRC 997 hotline page asks victims to call 997 within 24 hours of discovering a scam, contact their bank and make a police report at the nearest station. You can report a fake TikTok login page or account takeover as a security incident to CyberSecurity Malaysia's Cyber999 service. If someone has already changed details on the account, TikTok's page on signs of a hacked account lists what to look for, and our guide to a TikTok account where the hacker changed the email takes it from there.

#After You Get Back In

The aim is that losing one SIM can never lock you out again. TikTok's account safety page recommends linking both a phone number and an email, so one can stand in for the other.

  1. Link a current phone number and an email, both ones you expect to keep.
  2. Add a passkey under Account, then Passkey.
  3. Turn on 2-step verification under Security & permissions with at least two methods, as TikTok requires. If you choose the authenticator app, store the recovery code TikTok gives you somewhere safe and offline.
  4. Run Security checkup under Security & permissions and review trusted devices.
  5. Keep the SIM linked to TikTok active. If you plan to drop a number, change it on TikTok first while both lines still work.

For the same problem across Instagram, Facebook and other platforms, see our wider guide to recovering accounts when the email, phone or 2FA is gone.

#When a Case Review Makes Sense

The steps above are open to anyone, and you do not need someone else to fill in TikTok's forms for you. A second opinion helps when the number is gone and no email was ever linked, when friends verification and the Need more help form have both failed, or when the account carries a shop, a creator income or a brand. SocialSafe by AwareXone, our recovery service, reviews the case first and tells you honestly whether an official TikTok route is still open. We use the same TikTok forms you can, cannot restore an account ourselves, and never ask for your password or any code. Read how we handle TikTok account recovery cases, and our Trust Center sets out how we work.

#Frequently Asked Questions

Can I log in to TikTok with just my username?
Only with the password, and only if TikTok does not ask for a code on a new device. If 2-step verification is on, you will also need a trusted device or one of your other verification methods.
Can TikTok remove my old phone number from my account?
TikTok's own steps for changing a number need both the old and new number active. Without the old line, the route is the authentication reset through "Need more help?", which TikTok reviews.
Can I use my old number on a new TikTok account?
Not while it is still linked to the old one. TikTok says a phone number can only be associated with a single account.
What happens after I send the Need more help form?
TikTok uses the form to verify your identity, and only after that can you reset your authentication method. Keep the reply email open and send one complete request, because TikTok decides and some requests are declined.
Will my friends see my account details if they verify me?
TikTok's page describes a verification request that appears in your friends' Security & permissions settings. It does not say your phone number or email is shown to them, and you never need to give them your password or a code.
