TikTok Restricted From Sending Messages? What to Do

Restricted from sending messages on TikTok in Malaysia? Open Account check first. The cause is usually a rule violation, the 16+ age limit or a setting.

11 min read
Short answer

TikTok has blocked your direct messages, usually because a message broke its rules or because it believes you are under 16. Open Account check, then read the notice under System notifications. Appeal from the notice if TikTok got it wrong, or confirm your age for an age block. Do not open a second account to keep messaging.

Summary
  • The notice means TikTok has blocked your direct messages, usually after a message broke its rules or because it believes you are under 16.
  • Open Account check in the Safety Center or TikTok Studio first, then read the violation notice under System notifications to see which case you are in.
  • For a rule violation, appeal from the notice if TikTok got it wrong; for an age block, tap Appeal on the notification and confirm your age.
  • If the other person simply cannot receive your message, their privacy settings or a block may be the reason, and there is nothing to appeal.
  • Do not open a second account to keep messaging, and never pay anyone who offers to lift the restriction or asks for your password or codes.
  • TikTok makes the final decision on every appeal, and repeated or severe violations can end in a full account ban.

You try to reply to a customer or a friend on TikTok and the message will not go. Account check shows a warning sign next to "Direct messages: Restricted from sending messages". Everything else on the account still works: you can post, scroll and comment, but the inbox is shut.

The short answer: TikTok has limited your direct messages, usually because a message broke the Community Guidelines or because TikTok believes you are under 16, the minimum age for messaging. Sometimes nothing is restricted and the other person's settings are stopping you. Each case has a different fix.

This guide shows you how to find out which case you are in, how to appeal, what to do if messages you did not write are going out, and the mistakes that turn a messaging block into a lost account.

#What Does "Restricted From Sending Messages" Mean on TikTok?

It means TikTok has switched off your ability to send direct messages, while leaving the rest of the account open. TikTok's Community Guidelines on accounts and features say you must be 16 or older to use DMs, and that if you break the rules in a message, "your message will be removed and you might be temporarily blocked from sending new ones". Repeat or severe violations can lead to an account ban. Confirm the restriction in Account check, read the notice in your inbox to learn why, then wait it out, complete any policy training TikTok offers, or appeal if the decision is wrong. Nobody outside TikTok can lift it for you.

#How to Check Your Account Status on TikTok

Account check is TikTok's own list of what is and is not restricted. TikTok's page on your account status lists five things it can show, including login, posting, commenting, editing your profile and direct messages. You can reach it two ways.

  1. From the Safety Center: tap Profile, tap the Menu button at the top, choose "Settings and privacy", tap "Support", tap "Safety Center", then tap "Account check".
  2. From TikTok Studio: tap Profile, tap the Menu button, choose "TikTok Studio", then tap "Account check" under More tools.
  3. Look at the Direct messages line. TikTok says a checkmark means no issue and a warning sign means there is one.
  4. Take a dated screenshot before anything else.

Then find the reason. TikTok's page on content violations and bans says violation notices sit under Inbox, then "System notifications", then "Account updates" (you may need to scroll across). Screenshot that notice too.

#If a Violation Caused It: Wait, Train or Appeal

Most messaging restrictions follow a violation. TikTok says your account status reflects your violation history over the last 90 days and can be Healthy, Fair, Severe or Banned. Each violation's impact depends on the policy area and the feature where it happened, with direct messages named as one such feature. Repeated violations can lead to temporary feature restrictions or a permanent ban.

You have three realistic options, and they are not mutually exclusive:

  • Wait: TikTok's Community Guidelines describe DM blocks as temporary, and TikTok says violations expire after 90 days. It does not publish one fixed length for a messaging block, so rely on your own notice.
  • Complete policy training if it is offered: for certain initial violations, TikTok says optional in-app policy training may lift eligible restrictions. This does not apply if the first violation was severe.
  • Appeal if TikTok got it wrong: The notice explains why content was removed and how to appeal. If the appeal is approved, TikTok says your content and account status are reinstated.

One detail catches people out. TikTok says deleting the content that broke the rules does not remove the violation, and it may still restrict the account afterwards. Deleting the chat is not a fix.

#If It Is Age: The 16+ Rule and the Age Appeal

Direct messages have a minimum age of 16 on TikTok, even though the account itself is open from 13 in many places. TikTok's page on minimum age appeals says it may remove access to sending and receiving DMs if it believes you do not meet that age, and that you will get a notification the next time you open the app. Adults get caught by this too, usually because the birthday on an old account is wrong.

TikTok gives you 180 days from the date your access was removed to appeal. During that time you can still use the account and download direct messages that do not break the rules. If you do not appeal, or the appeal is not approved, the feature stays off. To appeal, open the notification in the app, tap "Appeal", and follow the instructions. The ways to confirm your age depend on your age and location:

Age appeal options listed on TikTok's minimum age appeals page, 29 September 2026. The options you see may differ by location.
Option TikTok offersWho it is forWhat you provide
Selfie with ID16 or olderA photo of a government-issued ID, plus a selfie holding the same ID and a paper showing a code TikTok sends you
Ask a parent or guardian16 to 17A parent's email; they confirm your date of birth on mobile and authorise a small temporary card charge, which is refunded
Photo with a parent or guardian16 to 17A photo with a parent or trusted adult over 25 holding a paper titled "TikTok proof of age" with your date of birth and the code
Credit card authorisation18 or olderCard details for a small temporary charge that is refunded

TikTok says you may cover parts of your ID that you have a legal right or obligation to cover. Upload a MyKad or passport only inside the TikTok appeal flow.

Malaysia adds its own layer. MCMC's Under-16 page says that from 1 June 2026 platforms are required by law to verify user age, that users aged 15 and below should not have their own social media account, and that 16 and 17 year olds get the highest default privacy settings. If you are under 16, an age appeal will not change the outcome. Our guide to TikTok age verification appeals covers the whole-account version of this check.

#If Nobody Restricted You: Settings on the Other Side

If Account check is clear and only some people are unreachable, the block is usually on their side. TikTok's page on managing direct messages explains who can message whom:

  • Friends (followers you follow back) and accounts someone follows can message them directly.
  • Everyone else has to send a message request first, which the other person can accept, delete or report.
  • People can set requests from followers or from others on TikTok to "Don't receive".
  • If the other person's account is private, you need to follow them before you can message them or send a request.
  • Accounts someone has blocked cannot send them message requests.
  • Safe mode, on by default, can put messages in "Filtered requests", so they may not see yours straight away.

None of these are penalties on your account, and none can be appealed. If the person matters to your business, ask them to follow you back or use another channel you both trust.

#If Messages You Did Not Send Are Going Out

A restriction can also be the result of someone else using your account. TikTok's page on hacked accounts lists messages you did not write being sent from your account as a sign of a hack, alongside a changed password, phone number or username. If a scammer used your inbox to spam people, the violations land on your account.

  1. Secure the email and phone number linked to the account first, because whoever controls them can reset TikTok again.
  2. Change your TikTok password under Settings and privacy, then Account, then Password. TikTok says changing the password logs you out on all other devices.
  3. Go to Settings and privacy, then "Security & permissions", then "Manage devices", and remove any device you do not recognise.
  4. Check that your own phone number is linked under Account Information.
  5. Report it under Settings and privacy, then "Report a problem". TikTok's page on reporting a problem says you can pick a topic and tap "Need more help?", or use "Chat with us".
  6. When you appeal the messaging violation, say plainly that the account was taken over and roughly when.

Warn your contacts from a channel you still control. Our guide to a hacked account messaging your friends covers what to tell them. In Malaysia you can also report the incident to CyberSecurity Malaysia's Cyber999 service, the national point of contact for computer security incidents.

#Mistakes That Turn a DM Block Into a Ban

A messaging restriction is usually temporary. What makes it permanent is often what the owner does next. Avoid these:

  • Opening another account to keep messaging. TikTok says it may restrict or ban accounts used to avoid an active restriction on another account you own.
  • Resending the same message, link or promotion to many people.
  • Deleting the chat and assuming the violation is gone. TikTok says it is not.
  • Letting the 180-day age appeal window pass while you wait for the feature to come back by itself.
  • Uploading an ID, selfie or card details anywhere other than the TikTok app's own appeal screen.
  • Paying an "unban" seller or a "TikTok agent" who contacts you in a DM, Telegram group or Facebook comment.

That promise comes from TikTok's page on avoiding fraudulent messages. Bank Negara Malaysia's National Fraud Portal statement tells scam victims to contact their bank or the NSRC at 997 immediately.

#Evidence to Keep Before You Appeal

Appeal screens rarely give you much room. Keep this ready so any appeal or report is short, specific and accurate:

  • A dated screenshot of Account check showing the Direct messages line.
  • The violation notice from System notifications, including the policy named and the date.
  • The removed message, if TikTok shows it, and a note of who you sent it to and why.
  • For an age block: the notification, the date it arrived, and the ID or confirmation method you plan to use.
  • For a suspected hack: login alerts, emails about changed details, and screenshots from friends who received messages you did not send.
  • A record of what you submitted and when, so you do not appeal the same decision twice by accident.

If the restriction has already spread to the whole account, our guide to TikTok account bans in Malaysia explains the ban appeal and what happens to your data.

#When Expert Recovery Help Makes Sense

Most messaging restrictions can be handled alone with the steps above. A second opinion helps when the inbox is how you take orders, when a hack and a violation are tangled together, or when an adult's business account is caught by an age decision. SocialSafe by AwareXone, our recovery service, reviews what happened first, tells you honestly whether an official route is still open, and helps you prepare the appeal through TikTok's own channels. Our TikTok account recovery service explains how that review works, and our Trust Center sets out what we will never ask you for, including passwords and login codes. For other platforms, start at the recovery hub.

#Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a TikTok message restriction last?
TikTok does not publish one fixed length for a DM block. Its Community Guidelines describe the block as temporary, and it says violations expire after 90 days. Check Account check and the notice for your own case.
Why can I comment and post but not send messages on TikTok?
TikTok restricts features one at a time, based on where a violation happened, so a breach in DMs can limit only messaging. The 16+ age limit can also switch off messaging on its own.
Can I still read my old TikTok messages while I am restricted?
For an age restriction, TikTok says you can still use your account and download direct messages that do not break its rules while you appeal. Messages TikTok removed for a violation will not come back unless an appeal succeeds.
I am over 18 but TikTok says I am too young to message. What now?
Open the age notification and tap Appeal. At the time of writing, adults can confirm their age with a selfie holding their ID or through credit card authorisation, which uses a small temporary charge that TikTok refunds.
Can AwareXone lift a TikTok messaging restriction?
No. Only TikTok can lift a restriction or approve an appeal. AwareXone can review your case and help you prepare an appeal through TikTok's official process, without ever asking for your password or codes.
