TikTok Underage Ban? How the Age Verification Appeal Works

TikTok banned you for being underage, or took away LIVE or messages? How the age appeal works in Malaysia, the deadlines, each ID option and the scams to avoid.

10 min read
Short answer

It means TikTok believes you are below its minimum age. Open the notice in the app, tap Download your data first, then tap Appeal and prove your age with your own real document. In Malaysia a banned account has 113 days to appeal and is deleted on day 120. If you really are under 16, do not appeal.

Summary
  • An underage ban means TikTok believes the account holder is below its minimum age, and a lost feature means it thinks you are too young for LIVE, coins or messages.
  • Open the notice in the TikTok app, tap Download your data first, then tap Appeal and follow the age check it offers you.
  • For an account ban outside the EEA, UK, Switzerland and US, TikTok gives 113 days to appeal and deletes the account on day 120.
  • Prove your age only inside the app with your own real document. Never send your MyKad, card details or login codes to anyone who messages you offering help.
  • Malaysian rules now require platforms to keep under-16s off their own accounts, so if you really are under 16 the appeal is not the way back.
  • TikTok makes the final decision on every age appeal, and an account that is not restored within the deadline is deleted.

You open TikTok and, instead of your feed, a notice says the account is banned because TikTok thinks you are too young. Or the account still works, but LIVE has gone and your messages are locked. You may be 24 with a wrong birthday saved years ago. You may be a parent holding your teenager's phone.

This is an age decision, not a hack and not a normal rule strike. The way back is the age appeal inside the notice: save your data, tap Appeal, and prove your age with one of the options TikTok offers. There is a deadline, and an account not restored in time is deleted.

This guide covers the two kinds of age action, the deadlines, each proof-of-age option, Malaysia's under-16 rule and the mistakes that end these appeals.

#What Should You Do If TikTok Says You Are Underage?

Open the notification in the TikTok app. If the whole account is banned, tap "Download your data" in the ban notice first, then tap "Appeal" and follow the instructions. TikTok's underage appeals page says that outside the EEA, UK, Switzerland and US, which includes Malaysia, you have 113 days from the ban to appeal and download your data, and the account is deleted on day 120 if you do not appeal or the appeal fails. If only a feature such as LIVE or messages was removed, the minimum age appeals page gives 180 days. Use only the checks shown in the app, with your own real document. If you really are under 16 in Malaysia, an appeal is not the answer.

#Account Ban or Feature Removed: Which Age Action Is This?

TikTok runs two separate age processes. An underage ban removes the whole account. A minimum age restriction leaves the account working but switches off a feature with its own age limit.

TikTok's help page says it may ban an account "if we believe you're under 13 years old", or under other ages set in its Privacy Policy and Terms of Service, and that you get a push and in-app notification the next time you open the app. The wording on your screen varies by app version and region, so match by meaning.

TikTok age notices at the time of writing. Deadlines apply outside the EEA, UK, Switzerland and US.

TikTok's account status page says you can open Account check from TikTok Studio, under More tools, or from Settings and privacy, Support, Safety Center. A warning sign next to "Direct messages" means messaging is restricted. Our guide to being restricted from sending messages separates age blocks from rule blocks.

#Save Your Videos Before You Appeal

Do this first, on the same day. If the appeal fails, the download window closes with the account.

  1. Open the ban notification and tap "Download your data".
  2. Choose a file format and tap "Request data". TikTok says the file may take a few days to prepare.
  3. When the in-app notification arrives, tap it, then "Download data". TikTok's data request page says the file stays available for up to 4 days, so save a copy off the phone promptly.

The download tool stops working after day 113. For a removed feature, TikTok says you keep the account and can request LIVE Replays within 30 days of each being created, and direct messages within 113 days.

#How to Appeal an Underage Ban on TikTok

The appeal starts from the notice. There is no email address to write to and no paid route. Open the appeal notification, tap "Appeal", follow the instructions and give an email address you can read, because TikTok sends the result of an account ban appeal by email.

TikTok says the options depend on your age and location, so you may not see all of them. At the time of writing, it lists four:

  • ID and selfies: photos of your government-issued ID plus three selfies taken from different angles.
  • Selfie with ID through Incode, a verification provider: photos of your ID and a live selfie. TikTok says you have 15 minutes once you start, and must wait 15 minutes to retry if you exit. At the end you are asked to share your date of birth with TikTok; decline and it cannot confirm your age.
  • Credit card authorisation, if you are 18 or over: a small, temporary charge that TikTok says it refunds.
  • Facial age estimation: a third-party service estimates your age from a live selfie, then deletes the selfie. It may not be offered where you live.

TikTok says it starts deleting your ID photos, selfies and email once the appeal is complete, unless a law requires it to keep them. Incode keeps what you submit until you ask it to delete it through your Incode account.

#How to Appeal a Lost LIVE, Coins or Messages Feature

A feature appeal also starts from the notification: tap "Appeal" and follow the instructions. The minimum age appeals page sets LIVE and buying coins at 18 and over, and direct messages at 16 and over. TikTok's Youth Safety guidelines add that you must be 16 or over for your videos to appear in the For You feed. The proof options differ from an account ban:

  • Selfie with ID, if you are 16 or older: a photo of your ID, and a selfie holding the same ID and a paper showing a unique code TikTok sends you. You may cover parts of the ID you have a legal right or obligation to cover.
  • Ask your parent or guardian, if you are 16 or 17: they confirm your date of birth from an emailed link on a mobile phone and authorise a small temporary card charge that TikTok refunds. They do not need a TikTok account.
  • Photo with a parent or guardian, if you are 16 or 17: you and a parent, guardian or another trusted adult over 25, who holds a paper titled "TikTok proof of age" with your date of birth and the unique code.
  • Credit card authorisation, if you are 18 or older.

If a feature appeal fails, TikTok says LIVE Replays for users aged 13 to 17 are deleted 30 days after creation, and users aged 13 to 15 keep the messaging restriction but can still request their messages.

#Malaysia's Under-16 Rule and What It Means for Your Appeal

MCMC's media statement of 1 June 2026 says the Child Protection Code under the Online Safety Act 2025 is in force. It requires licensed social media services, naming TikTok, to allow only users aged 16 and above to register, with age verified against government-issued records. Platforms are checking existing users over up to six months, and anyone found to be under 16 gets one month to download or transfer their photos and videos before any restriction or suspension.

MCMC's Under-16 page sets the tiers: no account at 15 and below, supervised accounts with the highest privacy defaults at 16 and 17, and ordinary use from 18. It says a child under 16 may use social media through a parent's account with that parent's supervision, and tells users to follow each platform's own guidance on verification.

  • If you are 16 or over and TikTok got your age wrong, appeal. A MyKad or passport is the kind of government-issued record MCMC describes.
  • If you are under 16 in Malaysia, save your videos within the window and stop there. Appealing with someone else's document is a false identity claim.
  • If you are a parent, MCMC describes supervised access through your own account, not a new account for your child.

Strike-based bans that have nothing to do with age are covered in our guide to a banned TikTok account in Malaysia.

#Before You Start: A Proof-of-Age Checklist

Most failed age checks come down to the photo, not the person. Have these ready before you tap Appeal, because some options run on a timer:

  • A screenshot of the notice with its date, so you know which deadline applies.
  • Your own valid MyKad, passport or other government-issued ID, not a photocopy.
  • Good light, a plain background and nothing shadowing your face. TikTok says glasses can stay on.
  • Your usual phone, with TikTok updated.
  • An email inbox you control, with the spam folder checked.
  • For a parent-assisted option: the adult present, their mobile phone, and paper and a pen.
  • A note of what you submitted and when, so you do not resubmit by accident.

#Mistakes That End Age Appeals

  • Appealing before downloading your data, then running out of days while you wait.
  • Using a sibling's or parent's ID to look older. That is a false identity claim, and it can put the adult at risk too.
  • Opening a new account with a different birthday. TikTok's Youth Safety guidelines say it removes accounts when it believes the user is under the minimum age, so this only repeats the problem.
  • Uploading a blurry, cropped or edited ID. Cover only what TikTok allows, physically, before taking the photo.
  • Starting the Incode check without your ID to hand and losing the 15 minutes.
  • Waiting for the account to come back by itself. It will not, and day 120 is final.

#What If the Age Appeal Is Rejected?

For an account ban, TikTok says it deletes the account on day 120 and starts deleting the data if the appeal is not approved. Before accepting that, check two things: that the photo was clear and the ID your own, and whether the app offers another attempt while you are still inside the 113 days.

If not, accept that the account may not come back, and keep the data you downloaded. TikTok makes the final decision on every age appeal. If you cannot open the app to reach the notice at all, TikTok's Report a problem form is its general contact route, and our TikTok recovery guide covers login problems that are not about age.

#When Expert Recovery Help Makes Sense

Most people can handle an age appeal alone with the steps above. A second opinion helps when the account supports a business or creator income, when an age ban and a hack are mixed up, or when an adult keeps failing the check as the deadline nears. SocialSafe by AwareXone, our recovery service, reviews the notice and what you have tried, then tells you honestly whether an official route is still open. Our TikTok account recovery service explains the review, and our Trust Center sets out what we will never ask for. We will not help anyone under 16 get around Malaysia's age rule.

#Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a TikTok age verification appeal take?
TikTok does not publish a review time. It says it will notify you of the result, by email if the account is banned. Submit once and keep watching that inbox.
Can I appeal a TikTok underage ban without an ID?
Sometimes. Depending on your age and location, TikTok may offer facial age estimation from a live selfie, or credit card authorisation if you are 18 or over. TikTok decides which options you see.
Is it safe to upload my MyKad to TikTok for age verification?
Upload it only inside the TikTok app, through the appeal that starts from the notice. TikTok says it uses the ID only to confirm your age and starts deleting it once the appeal is complete. Never send it to someone who messages you.
Why was my birthday changed after my appeal failed?
TikTok says that even when an appeal is not approved, it may update your date of birth based on what you submitted. Your date of birth is not shown to other people.
My child is under 16. Can they appeal the ban?
In Malaysia, MCMC's rules say under-16s should not hold their own social media accounts, so an appeal is not the route. Download the videos within the window instead.
