Threads Removed From Accounts Centre: Can't Log In

Removed Threads from Accounts Centre and now can't log in? Work out if it is unlinked, disabled or deleted, then reset its login and add it back.

Short answer

If Threads was moved out of your Accounts Centre or Meta Account, it is managed separately and your Instagram login may not open it any more. Check whether you see a disabled message first. If not, try a password reset for Threads using the details you signed up with, then add Threads back to the same Accounts Centre as Instagram.

Summary
  • Meta says that if you signed up for Threads with Instagram, Threads sits in the same Meta Account and can use your Instagram login.
  • Meta also says you can move your Threads profile out of your Meta Account, after which it is managed separately from Instagram.
  • Once Threads is separate, your Instagram password may no longer open it, so you need a login that belongs to Threads itself.
  • A disabled Threads profile shows a message when you try to log in, and a profile deleted by you or someone with your password cannot be restored.
  • If a hacker did the unlinking, secure your Instagram account first through Instagram's official hacked account page.

You were tidying your settings, or someone else got into your account, and Threads ended up removed from Accounts Centre. Now Threads will not let you in. Your Instagram still works, but the Instagram login no longer opens Threads, and the app keeps sending you in circles.

The short answer: once Threads is moved out of the Meta Account it shared with Instagram, Meta manages it separately, so it may need its own login. First check that the profile is not disabled or deleted. Then reset the Threads login using the details you signed up with, and once you are in, add Threads back to the same Accounts Centre as Instagram.

This guide explains how Threads and Accounts Centre fit together, how to tell which of three situations you are in, the steps to try, what to check if a hacker did the unlinking, and the limits Meta sets.

#Why Can't I Log In After Removing Threads From Accounts Centre?

Meta's page on managing your Threads profile in your Meta Account says, "If you signed up for Threads with Instagram or Facebook, your Threads account will be in the same Meta Account as the profile you signed up with." It explains that profiles in the same Meta Account can share login info, so "you can use your Instagram login info to access Threads."

The same page says you can move your Threads profile out of your Meta Account at any time to manage its settings separately, and that you can create a password just for Threads. So when Threads is moved out, the shared login link is gone. If Threads never had a separate password, the Instagram login you were relying on may not work for it any more.

Meta is moving people from Accounts Centre to Meta Account settings, so you may see either name. The labels in your app may differ from the ones here.

Meta's disabled Threads profiles page says, "If your Threads profile was disabled, you'll see a message telling you when you try to log in." It adds, "If you don't see a disabled message, you may be experiencing a login issue." That second line is the one that fits an unlink lockout.

#Steps to Try When Threads Was Unlinked

Work through these in order. Steps 2 and 3 come from people describing what worked for them in Threads community discussions in 2026, not from a Meta help page, so treat them as user-reported and expect results to vary.

  1. Update the Threads and Instagram apps, then close and reopen them, so you are on the current login screens.
  2. On the Threads login screen, choose the option to reset your password or get help logging in, and use the email address that was on your Instagram when you first joined Threads. User-reported.
  3. If asked for a username, type your Threads username rather than an email address or the @threads.net style address. User-reported.
  4. Open the reset email or text only from Meta, set a new password just for Threads, and log in.
  5. Once you are in, open Accounts Centre or Meta Account settings and add Threads back alongside your Instagram profile, if you want them linked again.
  6. Turn on two-factor authentication for the account and check the email and phone number listed are yours.

#If a Hacker Removed Threads

If you did not move Threads out yourself, assume someone else had access. Secure your Instagram first, because it is the account Threads was tied to. Instagram's official hacked account page starts the recovery steps from the account's username, phone number or email.

Meta's page on a Threads profile posting unauthorised content lists the checks to make once you are back in: change your password or send yourself a reset email, revoke access for suspicious third-party apps, turn on two-factor authentication, confirm your phone number and email are correct, and check Accounts Centre to remove any linked accounts you do not recognise.

  • Look for an email address or phone number you did not add to Instagram or Threads.
  • Check which devices are logged in and log out any you do not recognise.
  • Remove any profiles in your Accounts Centre that are not yours.
  • Never give a login code or password to anyone who messages you about the problem, even if they say they are Meta.

If the hacker also changed the email and phone on Instagram, our guide to Instagram hacked with the email and phone changed walks through that recovery. For a wider view of hacked and suspended Threads profiles, see our Threads hacked or suspended guide.

#Scams to Watch For

A stuck Threads login can bring offers of help in comments and DMs. Treat anyone asking for your password, login codes, backup codes or money to relink the account as a scam. Real reset messages come from Meta, inside the app or from Meta's own email or text, and they never need you to share the code with another person. Our guide on spotting fake recovery services covers how these approaches look.

#What Meta Will and Will Not Do

Some limits are firm. Meta's disabled profiles page says, "If your profile was deleted by you or someone with your password, there's no way to restore it." It says you can create a new profile with the same email address, but you may not be able to get the same username. A disabled profile follows Meta's review process, covered in our guide to appealing a suspended Threads profile.

If the profile was only unlinked, it still exists, and the fix is getting a working login for it. Meta controls that login flow, and no outside service can force a relink. Meta's Accounts Centre help page explains how adding and removing profiles works across Facebook, Instagram and other Meta apps.

#When a Case Review Makes Sense

If the reset emails go to an address you no longer control, or a hacker changed details on both Instagram and Threads, a review can help you work out which account to recover first and what evidence to prepare. SocialSafe by AwareXone is a Malaysia-based service, independent of Meta, that helps you use Meta's official recovery tools. We never ask for your password or login codes, and we cannot change Meta's decisions. See our Threads account recovery support and how we work on our trust page.

#Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Instagram login not work on Threads any more?
Meta says you can use your Instagram login for Threads when both are in the same Meta Account. If Threads was moved out, it may need its own login.
Is my Threads profile deleted if I removed it from Accounts Centre?
Moving Threads out of your Meta Account is separate from deleting it. Meta says a deleted profile cannot be restored, so check which one happened.
How do I add Threads back to Accounts Centre?
Log in to Threads first, then open Accounts Centre or Meta Account settings and add the Threads profile next to your Instagram.
I see a disabled message on Threads. What now?
That is a different problem from an unlink. Follow the on-screen steps to ask Meta to review the decision.
Someone else removed Threads from my Accounts Centre. What should I do first?
Secure your Instagram through Instagram's official hacked account page, then check Accounts Centre for linked accounts you do not recognise.
Can AwareXone relink my Threads account?
No outside service can relink it for you. AwareXone can help you use Meta's official recovery steps without asking for your password or codes.
