On Threads you can hide a reply with Hide for everyone, turn on Hidden Words, restrict a profile, block it, or report it as Bullying or harassment. Meta's pages say reports are anonymous. They do not promise removal, so save a record first and use each tool for what the page says it does.
Summary- Threads gives you Hide for everyone on a reply, Hidden Words filters, Restrict for a profile, Block, and Report with a Bullying or harassment reason.
- Meta's page says the person is not told when you restrict them, and that restricting someone on Instagram does not restrict them on Threads.
- Meta's pages say a report is anonymous, apart from intellectual property reports, and the profile you reported cannot see who reported it.

Someone has found your Threads post and keeps replying with insults. Maybe it is the same person each time, or maybe a pile of strangers has arrived at once. You open the app every morning expecting more, and you want to know which button actually helps: hide, restrict, block or report.
This guide follows Meta's own Threads help pages. It shows what each tool does, what it does not do, how to report a reply, a profile or a message, and how to check the result. We cannot promise that any report ends with a removal, and neither can Meta. A rushed step, such as replying in anger, can make things worse, so know what you are doing before you start.

#Which Threads Tool Should I Use First?
Start with the tool that matches the problem. If the aim is to stop seeing a reply, hide it. If the aim is to cut the person's reach into your thread without a fight, restrict them. If the person is breaking the rules, report them. The table puts the four main tools side by side, using only what Meta's pages say.
| Tool | What Meta's page says it does | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Hide for everyone | Covers a reply to your post. The page says to click Options next to the reply, then Hide for everyone | In its Hidden Words section the page says hidden replies move to a covered section at the bottom of the thread and others can still view them. It does not tell Meta anything about the person |
| Hidden Words | Hides replies with common offensive words, and your own custom filters for words, topics, phrases, numbers and emojis | Currently does not apply to messages you receive on Threads |
| Restrict | The person is not told. Their replies may be hidden from others or need your approval, and their chats move to Requests | They can still see your content and reply. It does not carry over from Instagram |
| Report | Lets you pick a reason such as Bullying or harassment. The report is anonymous, apart from intellectual property reports | The pages do not promise removal, and a report is not a block |
#How Do I Hide a Harassing Reply on Threads?
Meta's Hide posts you don’t want to see on Threads page says you can hide a reply to your post by hand. In the web version, you click Options next to the reply and then click Hide for everyone. In its Hidden Words section, the page says hidden replies in your threads are moved to a covered section at the bottom of your thread, and that others can still view these replies.
That last point matters. Hide for everyone tidies your thread, and it stops a reply from sitting under your post in full view. It is not deletion, and it is not a report. If the reply breaks the rules, hiding it does not tell Meta, so you may still want to report it.
#How Do Hidden Words Work for Replies?
The same page says you can automatically hide replies and posts that contain potentially offensive, misleading or spam content, using Hidden Words settings. It lists two parts.
- Automatically hide common offensive words in replies. The page says replies to your post that contain common words, phrases or emojis that may be offensive, misleading or spam will be hidden automatically. It says this setting is on by default, and that you can change it at any time.
- Choose words to hide by creating custom filters. The page says you can add words, topics with hashtags, phrases, numbers and emojis that you do not want to see to a custom filter. Posts that include items in your filter are hidden from your feeds and covered in search results and on others' profiles, and replies to your posts are hidden under the Hidden replies cover at the bottom of your post.
For the app, the page gives this path: tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right, tap Menu in the top right, tap Content preferences, then tap Hidden Words. You can toggle Hide common offensive words in replies there. To make your own filter, tap New filter below Custom filter, enter a name and description, tap Add words, choose how long to hide under Choose how long to hide, tap Select, and tap Save at the bottom.
Two limits are worth knowing. First, the page says your Hidden Words preferences currently will not apply to messages you receive on Threads. If the harassment arrives as a message, this tool will not catch it. Second, a filter only works on the words you give it, so a person who changes the spelling may not be caught by it. Treat it as a tidy-up, not a wall.
#What Does Restrict Do, and What Can the Person Still Do?
Meta's Restrict or unrestrict someone on Threads page says you can restrict any profile on Threads, even if you do not follow it. It says Meta will not let people know that you restricted their profile, and that if you restrict someone you follow, you will still follow their profile.
The page lists what changes when you restrict someone.
- Notifications. You will not receive new notifications when that person interacts with your content.
- Visibility. Restricted users can still see your content and reply, but their replies may be hidden from others or may need your approval.
- Messaging. A chat with a restricted profile moves from your main inbox to your Requests folder, and future messages from that person move to Message Requests automatically. The page says you can see the message without the person knowing that you have seen it, and then choose to delete it.
In the web version, the page says to go to the person's profile, click Options below their profile picture, and click Restrict. The same page says that if you feel you are being harassed, you can hide replies you do not want to see or report a profile.
#Do My Instagram Restrictions Carry Over to Threads?
No. The Restrict page says that restricting someone on Instagram does not restrict them on Threads, and the other way round. It gives an example: if you restrict someone on Threads, you will need to visit Instagram to restrict their Instagram profile as well.
#How Do I Report a Reply or a Profile?
Meta's Report content on Threads page says profiles and content on Threads must follow its Community Standards, and that you can report a profile or content that does not. The list of reasons includes Bullying or harassment, Hate speech or symbols, Scams or fraud, False information and Something else.
There are two routes, and the page gives the web steps for each.
- To report a post or reply from your feed: click Options next to it, click Report and follow the on-screen instructions.
- To report a person through their profile: click their username on their post or search for their profile, click Options below their profile picture, click Report and follow the on-screen instructions.
Pick the reason that matches what happened. For a pile of insults aimed at you, Bullying or harassment is the one the page lists. If the person is also pretending to be you, the page says you can report the profile for that, which is a separate reason.
The page says your report is anonymous, except if you are reporting an intellectual property infringement, and that the profile you reported will not see who reported them.
#What About Harassing Direct Messages?
If the abuse arrives as a message, use the route on Meta's Report a direct message or conversation on Threads page. It says you can report abusive messages sent to you on Threads if you think they go against its Community Standards.
- To report one message: click Messages on the left, click a conversation in your inbox, hover over the message, click More, then click Report. Select a reason, follow the on-screen instructions and click Submit report.
- To report the whole conversation: if it is with one other person, go to the conversation, click More in the top right and click Report. Select a reason, follow the instructions and click Submit report.
The page adds some details. You cannot report entire group chats, only messages and people in the group chat. Threads reviews up to 30 of the most recent messages sent in a reported conversation. Your report is anonymous, apart from intellectual property reports. Unsent messages could be included in a report if the entire conversation or a surrounding message is reported. If you want to stop someone from sending you messages, the page says you can block that person.
#What Happens If I Block Instead?
Meta's Block or unblock a profile on Threads page lists what changes when you block someone. Their likes are removed from your posts, and unblocking does not restore them. They cannot see your replies or any content you repost, their replies to your posts cannot be seen by others, and they cannot mention your username or tag you, even if you change your username. They cannot message you, and they cannot find your profile or content on Threads.
The page also says that if you are in a group chat with someone you blocked, you get a dialog asking whether to stay in the group or leave, and that if you stay, you and the blocked person can see each other's messages in the group.
#How Do I Check What Happened to My Report?
Meta's Check the status of something you’ve reported on Threads page says that if you reported something for not following the Community Standards, you may have the option to check its status from your support requests. It says that in Support Requests you can tap available reports to learn more about the policies, see when Meta takes action on your report and the decision it made, and request a review of the decision. For some types of content, the page says you cannot request a review.
#What Should I Keep Before I Hide, Block or Report?
Take a record first. Screenshot the replies with the date and the username visible, copy the links to the post and the profile, and note the time. Our guide on collecting evidence before reporting harassment explains why a clear record helps whatever you decide to do next.
#What If the Replies Include Threats?
Insults and threats are different. If a reply threatens you, names where you live, or demands something, treat it as more serious than rude replies. Save the record, report it through Threads with the reason that fits, and think about whether to make a police report. Our guide on making a police report about online harassment in Malaysia explains how that route works. We make no legal claims here beyond what Meta's pages say.
#What the Pages Do Not Say
The pages we read do not promise that a report will lead to removal or to any action against the profile. They do not say how long Meta takes to decide, the number of reports it takes, or what happens to a person who is reported. They do not say how to reach a person at Meta about one specific report. They also give web steps, and the phone app may show different menus. We do not know your outcome and will not guess it.
#When It Is Safer to Get Expert Help
Some people handle this alone, and the official steps stay first. The risks are plain. A reply made in anger can turn one troll into a longer fight. A report with the wrong reason may not describe what happened clearly. Blocking before you save a record can leave you with nothing to show. And people who contact you after an incident, claiming they can get the account removed for you, are not offering a route Meta describes. Our guide on spotting fake recovery services lists the signs.
If you are unsure about any step, or the harassment is hurting your income, your business or your family, handing the case to an experienced team such as AwareXone is the safer choice. We can help you build a clear record, choose the right report route and word your reports calmly. See our social media problem solutions page, and use the Apply for Case Review button at the end of this guide.
#When a Case Review Makes Sense
If the harassment continues after you have used the tools, comes from several profiles, or crosses into threats, a review can help you decide what to do first. SocialSafe by AwareXone is a Malaysia-based service, independent of Meta, that helps you use the official routes. We never ask for your password or login codes, and we cannot change Meta's decisions.
