Threads Account Hacked or Suspended? What to Do
Threads hacked, disabled or deleted? Where the problem usually sits (often Instagram), how to recover and appeal through Meta's official routes, and how to secure both.
Start with the account you signed up with, usually Instagram. If you are locked out, recover Instagram through its hacked account page, then log in to Threads and change the password. If Threads shows a disabled message, follow the on-screen option to request a review. Never send your password or login code to anyone. Meta makes the final decision.
Summary- Threads usually sits on top of an Instagram or Facebook account, so a Threads problem is often really a problem with that login.
- If you are locked out, recover Instagram first through its hacked account page, then log in to Threads and change the password.
- If Threads shows a disabled message, follow the on-screen option to request a review, and check Account Status for removed posts and limits.
- Deleting Threads becomes permanent after the deadline, but logging back in before then cancels it, so recover the login quickly after a hack.
- Replies and DMs from "Meta Support" accounts are not Meta. Never send your password, login code or backup codes to anyone.
- Only Meta can restore or reinstate a Threads profile, and it makes the final decision on every review.

A friend in Penang sends you a screenshot: your Threads profile has just posted a link to a "limited crypto offer". You open the app and it asks you to log in again. Your password fails. You search for a Threads support page and keep landing on Instagram's help centre instead.
That is not a mistake. For most people, Threads sits on top of an Instagram account, so a Threads problem is often an Instagram problem wearing a different badge. Before you fill in any form, work out where the problem really sits: the Instagram or Facebook login behind Threads, the Threads profile itself, or a scammer in your replies.
This guide covers how Threads and Instagram are connected, what to do after a hack, how Threads suspensions and appeals work, what deactivating or deleting Threads does to Instagram, and how to secure both.

#What should you do if your Threads account is hacked or suspended?
If you signed up for Threads with Instagram and you are locked out, recover Instagram first through Instagram's hacked account page, then log back in to Threads and change the password. If you can still log in, change the password, turn on two-factor authentication, check your email and phone in account settings, and remove linked accounts and third-party apps you do not recognise. If Threads shows a disabled message, follow the on-screen option to request a review. If posts were removed or features limited, check Account Status in Threads settings and request a review there. Meta makes the final decision on every review. Nobody legitimate will ask for your password or login code, and if money was lost, call your bank's hotline or 997 immediately.
#How Is a Threads Profile Connected to Instagram?
A Threads profile is usually a layer on top of an Instagram or Facebook account, not a separate identity. At the time of writing, Instagram's help page on creating a Threads profile says you sign in with your Instagram or Facebook account, one Threads profile per account. Meta's About Threads page also describes signing up with an email address or phone number instead, but Meta's help article on signing up without Instagram is not shown in every region, so check the sign-up screen in your app rather than assuming the option exists for you.
- Shared login: Meta's page on Threads in Accounts Center says that if Instagram and Threads sit in the same Accounts Center, your Instagram login opens Threads. You can also create a password just for Threads.
- Shared information: Instagram's About Threads page says Threads uses your login information, your age and your Community Standards account status from the account you signed up with.
- Shared support inbox: Meta's Oversight Board FAQ says Instagram and Threads share the same support requests, so a Threads decision can appear in either app.
So first answer one question: which account did you use to sign up? If it was Instagram, most of this guide runs through Instagram. If it was Facebook, the same logic applies to Facebook, and our Facebook recovery guide is the better starting point.
#Where Does Your Threads Problem Really Sit?
Match what you see to a row below. More than one can be true at once: a hacked account can also be disabled because of what the attacker posted.
| Situation | Where the problem really sits | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Threads posts things you did not write, but you can still log in | The login behind Threads, usually Instagram's | Change the password, turn on 2FA, remove unknown linked accounts and apps |
| Locked out of both Instagram and Threads | The Instagram account has been taken over | Recover Instagram at instagram.com/hacked, then secure Threads |
| Instagram works, but Threads will not log in | A separate Threads password, or Threads removed from your Accounts Center | Log in to Threads with your Instagram details, then use the reset option Threads shows |
| Threads shows a disabled message | A Threads enforcement decision, or a regional age rule | Follow the on-screen option to request a review |
| Posts removed or features blocked | Threads Account Status | Request a review of each decision you disagree with |
| Instagram itself is disabled | The Instagram account | Appeal the Instagram decision first |
| A fake Threads profile uses your name | Impersonation, not your account | Keep evidence and report the fake profile |
| A stranger offers to recover your account | A likely recovery scam | Share nothing, pay nothing, block and report |
#Why a Hacked Instagram Usually Means a Hacked Threads Profile
If Threads shares a login with Instagram, whoever controls that login can open Threads. Meta's page on Threads posting unauthorised content says strange posts mean your password may be compromised, and it sends anyone who cannot log in to the same hacked account page Instagram uses. There is no separate Threads recovery form to find.
Instagram's hacked account help lists the routes. Work through them from a device you trust:
- Secure the email on your Instagram first: new password, two-step verification, unknown devices signed out.
- Look for a message from [email protected] about a changed email address. Its "Secure my account" option may undo the change.
- On the Instagram login screen, tap "Forgotten password?" and request a login link to your email or phone.
- If that fails, request support from a mobile device, giving a secure email only you can access.
- Complete the identity check. For an account with photos of you, that can be a video selfie; otherwise, the email or phone you signed up with and the device type you used.

#What to Check in Threads After You Get Instagram Back
Getting Instagram back does not clean up Threads. Attackers often post, change settings or connect apps while they have access. As soon as you can log in to Threads:
- Change the password. Meta says this logs out every signed-in device, including the attacker's.
- Turn on two-factor authentication, and confirm the phone and email in settings are yours.
- Remove linked accounts you do not recognise in Accounts Center, and revoke third-party apps you did not approve.
- Screenshot the attacker's posts with the date and time, then delete them.
- Open Account Status. If any of those posts led to removals or restrictions, request a review and explain that the account was compromised at the time.
#What If Threads Says Your Profile Is Disabled or Suspended?
A disabled Threads profile is one Meta has turned off: a platform decision, not a hack. Instagram's page on disabled Threads profiles says you will see a message when you log in, that profiles which break the Community Standards may be disabled, and that in certain regions profiles in a specific age range may be disabled under local laws. If you think it was a mistake, you may be able to request a review by opening the app, entering your username and password, and following the on-screen instructions. No disabled message usually means a login problem instead. For the full appeal process, the evidence to gather and the ID check, see our Threads suspension appeal guide.
Many restrictions stop short of suspension. Threads Account Status, in Settings, lists removed content and features you can no longer use, with a review option for each. Meta says repeated removals can cost you the account, usually after a warning, so check it after every removal.
For a single removed post, Meta's page on removed Threads posts says you can tap "Ask for a review" in the notification, or use Account Status or Support requests. A reply may take up to 90 days, and a request may be closed before anyone reviews it. Some decisions can then go to the independent Oversight Board, which takes only a small number of eligible appeals.
If Instagram itself is disabled, appeal that first. Our guide to a disabled Instagram account in Malaysia covers the review steps and what to prepare.
#Deactivate or Delete: What Happens to Your Instagram?
Deactivating hides your Threads profile; deleting removes it for good. Neither deletes your Instagram account.
- Deactivate: Meta's page on deactivating Threads says your content stays hidden until you reactivate, and that for profiles created with Instagram or Facebook it does not delete your Threads data or affect Instagram. You can deactivate once a week.
- Delete: Meta's page on deleting Threads says the profile, content, likes and followers are permanently deleted 30 days after the request, without deleting your Instagram or Facebook account. Logging back in before the deadline cancels it; the number of days varies by region.
- Afterwards: you wait 90 days before signing up again with the same Instagram account. If the account was removed for breaking the Community Standards, you may not be able to sign up with it again.
- Only you can do it: Meta cannot delete a Threads account for you. You must be logged in to request it.
This matters after a hack. If an attacker requested deletion, logging back in during the cancellation window can stop it, which is another reason to recover the login quickly. Once deletion completes, Meta says a profile deleted by you or someone with your password cannot be restored. You can start a new one, but you may not get the same username.
#How to Secure Instagram and Threads Together
- Give the email on your Instagram a unique password and its own two-step verification. Whoever controls that inbox can reset Instagram, and with it Threads.
- Turn on two-factor authentication for Instagram, ideally with an authenticator app, and keep the backup codes offline. Our 2FA setup guide for Instagram, Facebook and TikTok walks through it.
- Keep the phone and email in account settings current, so recovery links reach you.
- Review Accounts Center every few months and remove linked accounts you do not recognise.
- Revoke third-party apps you no longer use. Meta warns against apps that offer likes or followers in exchange for your login.
- Decide whether Threads should share Instagram's login. A separate Threads password, or removing Threads from the shared Accounts Center, limits what one stolen login opens, at the cost of two sets of settings to maintain.
- Screenshot your profile, username and follower count now, in case you ever need to show the account is yours.
Our guide to the fake Meta support scam in Malaysia shows how these accounts work. If someone has made a fake Threads profile in your name rather than taking yours, our impersonation evidence guide explains what to capture before you report it.
#When to Ask for Help
Most people recover Threads by recovering the Instagram or Facebook account behind it. Outside help makes sense when both are gone, the official routes keep failing, or the profile carries a business or public reputation. SocialSafe by AwareXone, our Malaysia-based recovery service, starts with a review of your case, and sometimes the honest answer is that you can finish it yourself. Our Threads account recovery page explains what we look at.
We use only Meta's official recovery and appeal routes, the same ones described here, and never ask for your password or login codes. Our Trust Center sets out how we handle cases. Only Meta can restore or reinstate a Threads profile.
