Someone Took Your YouTube Handle: What You Can Do

Another channel is using the YouTube handle you wanted or one that copies yours. Learn how handles work, when it counts as impersonation and how to report it.

6 min read
Short answer

If another channel simply registered the handle first, YouTube has no general process to hand it to you, and handles cannot be sold or transferred. If the handle deliberately copies yours, for example with misspellings or extra words, report the channel for impersonation and give your own channel URL. YouTube reviews the report and decides.

Summary
  • Each YouTube channel has one unique handle, and YouTube does not allow handles to be sold or transferred.
  • A handle you want being taken is not a breach by itself, but a handle that copies you to mislead viewers can be impersonation.
  • If you change your handle, YouTube holds the old one for 14 days and then it becomes available to others.
  • Report impersonating channels through YouTube's impersonation route and give your own channel URL.
  • YouTube reserves the right to change, reclaim or remove handles and makes the final decision.

Finding that another channel holds the YouTube handle you wanted is frustrating, especially when it is your own name or brand. What you can do depends on why the handle is taken. If another channel simply chose it first, YouTube has no general route to give it to you. If the handle is copying you to mislead viewers, that can break YouTube's impersonation policy and you can report it. This guide explains how handles work and which route fits.

#How do YouTube handles work?

YouTube describes handles as short, unique channel identifiers that start with the @ symbol and are separate from channel names. Each channel can have only one handle, and the handle becomes the channel's YouTube URL (YouTube Help).

YouTube's handle guidelines say a handle must not already be in use and must follow its Community Guidelines. YouTube does not allow the sale or transfer of handles, and it says it reserves the right to change, reclaim or remove a handle at any time. Handles are not case-sensitive.

YouTube's impersonation policy lists examples that are not allowed, including adding Real or Official to pose as someone's authentic channel, posing as a backup channel by adding words like Backup, Shorts or Live to a creator's name, and using a channel name or handle that is phonetically identical or visually similar to an established entity, including deceptive misspellings (YouTube Help).

#What should I save before reporting?

  • The impersonating channel's handle URL and channel name
  • Your own channel URL and handle
  • Dated screenshots of its profile picture, banner and recent uploads
  • Comments or videos where it presents itself as you
  • Any messages viewers forwarded, such as fake giveaways

#How do I report a handle that impersonates me?

YouTube says that if you feel your channel is being impersonated, you can report the channel. In your report:

  1. Say that the channel is impersonating you or your channel.
  2. Give the impersonating channel's URL and your own channel URL.
  3. Explain what it copied: the handle pattern, name, picture, banner or videos.
  4. Point out specific examples from the policy that apply, such as an added Official or a deceptive misspelling.
  5. Submit and note the date.

YouTube says that if it determines a channel was established to impersonate another person or entity, the channel may be removed. It does not say the handle will be passed to you.

#How do I change or check my own handle?

YouTube gives these steps (YouTube Help):

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio.
  2. From the left menu, select Customization, then Profile.
  3. Under Handle, view or change your handle.
  4. If you change it, click Publish to confirm.

If your preferred handle is not available, it is usually because another channel is already using it or it does not meet YouTube's handle guidelines, so try a clear variation of your name.

#Common mistakes

  • Treating a channel that legitimately holds a handle as impersonation.
  • Changing your handle before a launch without realising the old one is released after 14 days.
  • Paying someone who offers to buy or transfer a handle, which YouTube does not allow.
  • Reporting without giving your own channel URL, so YouTube cannot compare the two.

#Watch out for handle sellers

People looking for a particular handle are sometimes offered it for sale by strangers. YouTube does not allow the sale or transfer of handles, so paying for one puts your money and possibly your account at risk. Never share your Google password or verification codes. Our guide on spotting fake recovery services lists the warning signs.

#What if a fan channel uses a handle like mine?

Not every channel that uses your name is impersonation. YouTube's impersonation policy says fan channels should state that they are fan channels explicitly in their channel name or handle, so that it is obvious to viewers the channel does not represent the original creator (YouTube Help). A clearly labelled fan channel is usually allowed. A channel that hides that it is a fan account, or that copies your profile picture, banner or colour scheme so viewers think it is you, is a different matter.

YouTube also says the copy does not need to be identical. The policy states that a channel does not have to be a perfect copy, as long as the intent to copy the other channel is clear. Workarounds such as typos, special fonts or extra punctuation used to trick viewers into thinking a channel is a different creator are listed as not allowed.

When you report, describe the overall picture rather than only the handle. Mention the copied artwork, reuploaded videos and any comments where the channel claims to be you. YouTube says it considers a variety of factors when it evaluates removal requests, including whether the material is parody or satire.

#What are the realistic limits?

YouTube controls handles and decides on impersonation reports. A handle registered first by another genuine channel will usually stay with that channel, even if it matches your name. Where the handle is part of an impersonation, the report may lead to the channel being removed, but YouTube does not commit to reassigning the handle.
