YouTube Channel Impersonating You: How to Report It
A YouTube channel is copying your name, branding or voice. See what YouTube counts as impersonation, how to report it and what evidence to save first.
Report the channel to YouTube for impersonation and explain what it copied, such as your name, handle, profile picture or banner. If it uses AI to copy your face or voice, also file a privacy complaint. Save the channel URL and screenshots first. YouTube reviews the report and may remove channels created to impersonate.
Summary- YouTube's impersonation policy covers copied names, handles, profile pictures, banners and AI copies of a voice or likeness.
- Report the channel for impersonation, and use the privacy complaint process for AI content that looks or sounds like you.
- Save channel URLs, handles and screenshots before you report.
- Fan channels are allowed if they say clearly that they are fan channels.
- YouTube decides the outcome. If it finds a channel was set up to impersonate, it may remove the channel.

If a YouTube channel is pretending to be you or your brand, YouTube treats that as impersonation under its Community Guidelines. You report the channel, explain what it copied, and YouTube decides whether to act. If the channel uses AI to copy your face or voice, there is a second route through YouTube's privacy complaint process. This guide sets out what counts, how to report, what to save and what to expect.

#What does YouTube count as impersonation?
YouTube says it does not allow unauthorised impersonation of a person, entity or channel that may mislead viewers. That can include deceptively copying branding, content or usernames, and using AI to copy someone's voice or likeness so it looks as if the channel is owned or authorised by them (YouTube Help).
The policy gives examples of what is not allowed, including:
- Adding words such as Real or Official to a channel name to pose as the authentic version of someone else's channel
- Posing as a backup channel by adding Backup, Shorts or Live to a creator's name
- Copying profile pictures, banners or colour schemes so the intent to copy is clear, even if the channel is not identical
- Using typos, special fonts or extra punctuation to trick viewers
- Using a channel name or handle that sounds the same as, or looks very like, an established entity, including deceptive misspellings
- Posting comments that make people think you are another person or entity
YouTube also says that fan channels should state clearly in the channel name or handle that they are fan channels, so viewers can tell they do not represent the original creator (YouTube Help).
#Which route fits my situation?
| Situation | Route | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A channel copies your name, handle, picture or banner | Report the channel for impersonation | This is the core impersonation policy |
| A video uses an AI copy of your face or voice | Privacy complaint for altered or synthetic content | YouTube handles realistic AI likeness through its privacy process |
| A video shows you or your personal information without consent | Privacy complaint | Privacy guidelines cover identifiable people |
| A channel reuploads your videos unchanged | Impersonation report, and a copyright request if you own the videos | Copying content without adding anything is listed under impersonation |
| Someone took over your own channel | Account recovery, not impersonation | See our YouTube channel hacked guide |
#What should I save before reporting?
- The full URL and handle of the impersonating channel
- Your own channel URL, so YouTube can compare the two
- Screenshots of the channel name, profile picture, banner and About section, with the date visible
- Links to specific videos, Shorts or comments that copy you
- Any messages viewers forwarded to you from the fake channel, such as giveaway or investment offers
Our guide on collecting evidence before reporting explains how to keep a clear record.
#How do I report a YouTube channel impersonating me?
YouTube's safety tools page lists a route to report impersonations of you or your channel, and the impersonation policy page links to it (YouTube Help). A sensible order is:
- Open YouTube's impersonation policy page and follow its link to report a channel.
- Say whether the channel is impersonating you, your channel or someone else.
- Give the URL of the impersonating channel and the URL of your genuine channel.
- Describe exactly what was copied: name, handle, picture, banner, videos or voice.
- Submit the report and keep a note of the date and what you sent.
The wording of each screen can change. Follow the current form on YouTube rather than a copied screenshot from an old guide.
#What if the channel uses an AI copy of my face or voice?
YouTube says that if someone has used AI to alter or create content that looks or sounds like you, you can ask for it to be removed through the privacy complaint process for altered or synthetic content. To qualify, the content should show a realistic altered or synthetic version of your likeness (YouTube Help).
YouTube lists factors it considers, including whether the content is disclosed as altered, whether you can be uniquely identified, whether it is realistic, whether it has parody, satire or public interest value, and whether it shows a public figure in sensitive behaviour such as endorsing a product. The person shown, or their legal representative, must submit the complaint. Our article on removing an AI deepfake video covers this in more depth.
#What happens next?
YouTube says that if it determines a channel was established to impersonate another person or entity, the channel may be removed (YouTube Help). For privacy complaints, YouTube weighs factors such as public interest, newsworthiness and consent (YouTube Help). YouTube does not publish a fixed response time.
#Common mistakes
- Reporting one video when the whole channel is the problem. Report the channel.
- Leaving out your own channel URL, which makes the comparison harder.
- Treating an honest fan channel that labels itself clearly as impersonation.
- Using a privacy complaint for a channel that only copies your name, or an impersonation report for an AI video of your face.
- Asking viewers to mass report with abusive comments, which can create new problems for you.
#Beware of removal scams
YouTube says its employees will never ask for your password and warns people not to be fooled by anyone pretending to be from YouTube (YouTube Help). Treat anyone who offers to delete a channel through a contact inside YouTube as a warning sign. Never share passwords, one-time codes or backup codes. Our guide to spotting fake recovery services lists other red flags.
#What are the realistic limits?
YouTube makes the final decision. Parody, satire and commentary channels may stay up, and a channel that only shares a common name with you may not breach the policy. Where a report is declined, clearer evidence of copying, a privacy complaint for AI likeness, or a copyright request for reuploaded videos you own may be the better next step.
