Telegram Too Many Attempts: What the Wait Means

Telegram says too many attempts, try again later? See what Telegram's developer pages say about the wait and the official support routes for login.

8 min read
Short answer

Telegram's developer pages say a FLOOD error means the maximum number of attempts was exceeded and a wait is required, and that each phone number has a daily limit on login attempts. The current FAQ gives no wait time. Stop retrying, check your number format, and use Telegram's support form if you stay locked out.

Summary
  • Telegram's developer pages describe a FLOOD error as the maximum allowed number of attempts being exceeded, with a required wait before you can repeat the action.
  • In a test accounts section, Telegram's developer pages say each phone number has a daily login attempt limit, 5 as a changeable example, then a FLOOD error.
  • Telegram's current FAQ has no section for the too many attempts message and gives no wait time, so treat any number from a forum as unconfirmed.
  • Telegram's FAQ says for login problems you can use its support form, and that it relies on volunteers for support.
  • Retrying in a hurry is the wrong step here, so know what you are doing before you start, and never share a login code with anyone.

You enter your number, wait for the code, type it in and the screen says too many attempts, please try again later. You try again and it says the same. You cannot get into your Telegram account, and nothing on the screen tells you how long to wait.

The short answer: the exact wait is not given on Telegram's current FAQ. Telegram's developer pages do describe a related limit. Its error handling page says a FLOOD error means the maximum allowed number of attempts has been exceeded, and that a wait is required. The safest move is to stop retrying, check the basics below and use the official support route if you remain locked out. Retrying in a hurry is the wrong step here, so know what you are doing before you start.

This guide explains what the pages say, what to check, what Telegram's official support routes are, and what you should not do.

#What Does Too Many Attempts Mean?

We could not find the exact words "too many attempts" on Telegram's official pages we read, so we cannot quote an official explanation of the app message itself. What we can quote is how Telegram describes the underlying limit for developers.

The error handling page describes a 420 FLOOD error as the maximum allowed number of attempts to invoke a method with the given input having been exceeded. Its example is requesting a large number of text messages for the same phone number. The error looks like FLOOD_WAIT_X, and Telegram says it means a wait of X seconds is required, where X is a number. A related line says: "Please wait %d seconds before repeating the action."

Telegram's developer page on logging in adds a figure, in a section for testing. It says each phone number is limited to only a certain number of login attempts per day, giving 5 as an example but saying this is subject to change, after which the API returns a FLOOD error until the next day. It is written for developers, so read it as an explanation of how the limit works and not as a promise about your account.

In plain terms, repeated code requests or repeated wrong entries for the same number can hit a limit, and the app then asks you to wait. What the screen shows depends on the app and the limit that was reached, and we cannot tell from the pages which one you have.

#How Long Will the Wait Last?

Telegram's FAQ, which is its official help page, does not give a wait time for too many attempts. We could not find a wait length for this message on any official page. The developer page says the wait is shown as a number of seconds, and that a daily limit can run until the next day. Any other number you read on a forum or a video is a user report and not an official figure, and some pages that circulate are old.

We therefore do not state a number of hours or days. If your app shows a countdown or a wait, that is the figure to trust for your case. Telegram's support form is the official route if the message does not clear.

#What Should I Check First?

Telegram's FAQ has a troubleshooting section for login and SMS. It gives these points.

  • Enter your mobile number in the international format: a plus sign, your country code, your city or carrier code and then your number.
  • Telegram accounts can only be connected to a mobile number. Landline numbers are not supported.
  • Codes dictated by a phone call may be unavailable for particular carriers, or may require two-step verification to be enabled in Settings, then Privacy and Security.
  • If you recently used a Telegram app on another device, even a different app on the same device, the code may be sent through Telegram instead of by SMS. Check the chat with Telegram, a verified profile with a blue check.

These are checks, not ways around the limit. Fixing a typo in your number is sensible. Requesting a fresh code over and over is the step likeliest to keep you locked out, going by what the developer pages say about attempts.

The FAQ also gives a warning on the Telegram-delivered code. It says getting codes via Telegram should not be considered an alternative to using an up-to-date phone number. If your number changed, make sure Telegram is connected to a phone number you control, otherwise you risk losing access to your account forever.

#What If I Get Codes I Did Not Ask For?

Telegram's FAQ describes a chat called Verification Codes, used for codes from third-party services. It says that if you receive a code there it is probably because you asked to log in to an outside website or app, and that it is also possible someone else accidentally entered your phone number. It says your Telegram account is safe in that case. If you did not request the code, tap it and select Report.

This is separate from your Telegram login. But if someone keeps entering your number, you may see repeated codes, so do not enter them anywhere. Telegram's developer pages also say login codes sent inside a message or forwarded to another chat are invalidated. Never paste or forward a code into a chat while you are trying to log in.

#What Are the Official Support Routes?

Telegram's FAQ says: "If you are having registration or login problems, please contact us using this form." Its support page is a short form that asks you to describe your problem and give your name and contact details. The language list on the page includes Bahasa Melayu. Describe what you see on screen in your own words and the dates. Do not include a login code.

The FAQ gives two more routes.

  • If you can still use Telegram on another device, go to Settings, then Ask a question. The FAQ notes that Telegram relies on volunteers for support.
  • The FAQ names @smstelegram on Twitter as a special account for login problems. It says the account is official and that you can DM it the number you use for Telegram, which it needs to investigate. It says Telegram has no other support accounts on any social media platform.

The FAQ also says that if anyone on Facebook or any other platform says they are Telegram, they are not. Treat any private message, group admin or video comment that offers to unlock your login as fake, whatever the profile picture. Our guide to a banned phone number on Telegram covers a different problem that can look similar.

#What Not to Do

  • Do not keep requesting codes or entering guesses. Telegram's developer pages describe a limit on attempts.
  • Do not give a login code to anyone, including someone who says they work for Telegram. A code lets the holder into your account.
  • Do not pay anyone who offers to remove the wait. Telegram names only its form, its in-app route and one Twitter account.
  • Do not follow a link from a stranger to a login page. Open the app or telegram.org yourself.
  • Do not use a new number just to get a code if you cannot control it later. Telegram warns you risk losing access forever.

If the problem started after you lost your phone or suspect that someone else has your number, see what to do if your phone is stolen first.

#What Telegram Does Not Say

The pages we read do not say how long the wait will last in your case, whether support can shorten it, or how long a support request takes. They do not describe the message in the app, only the underlying limit. We could not confirm a wait time from an official page, so we do not give one.

#When It Is Safer to Get Expert Help

You can follow the official steps yourself. The risks are specific. Repeated attempts can run into the limit that Telegram's developer pages describe. If your number is no longer under your control, Telegram's FAQ warns that you risk losing access forever. Codes you share can be used to take the account, and Telegram says people on other platforms who claim to be Telegram are not. Telegram says it relies on volunteers for support, so send one clear request and not several confusing ones.

If you are unsure about any step, or the account matters for your income or business, handing the case to an experienced team such as AwareXone is the safer choice. We can help you write a clear support request, check your number and device situation and keep you away from fake helpers. See our social media problem solutions page, and use the Apply for Case Review button at the end of this guide.

#When a Case Review Makes Sense

If the wait does not clear, you changed your number, your account holds a business community or you suspect someone else is using your number, a review can help you plan the next step before you try again. SocialSafe by AwareXone is a Malaysia-based service, independent of Telegram, that helps you use official routes. We never ask for your password or login codes and we cannot change Telegram's decisions. See how we work on our trust page.
