"This Phone Number Is Banned" on Telegram: What Now
Telegram number banned in Malaysia? What the ban, "Too many attempts", limited and frozen notices mean, how to appeal officially, and which scams to avoid.
It means Telegram has blocked that number from logging in, which is different from a short login wait or a limited account. If you think it is a mistake, write once to Telegram through the login help form on its website. Nobody can sell you an unban, and never share a login code. Telegram makes the final decision.
Summary- "This phone number is banned" means Telegram has blocked that number from logging in, which is different from a short login wait or a limited account.
- "Too many attempts, please try again later" is a temporary block on code requests, so stop retrying and wait before you try again.
- For a banned number, write once to Telegram through its login help form on the Telegram website, or the official @smstelegram account on X.
- Limited accounts appeal through @SpamBot, and frozen accounts appeal with the Submit an Appeal button in the app before the date it shows.
- Nobody can sell you an unban. Telegram has no other support accounts on social media, and you should never share a login code with anyone.
- Telegram makes the final decision, and some numbers and accounts do not come back even after a careful appeal.

You open Telegram, type your number to log in, and instead of a code you get a short line of text: "This phone number is banned." Your chats, your groups and the channels you run are all behind that number, and the app gives you no reason.
That notice is a ban on the number, and the way back is one clear request through Telegram's official login help channels. Not every Telegram warning is a ban, though: "Too many attempts" is a timer, and limited or frozen accounts appeal inside the app.
This guide shows which notice you have, what to do for each, what to put in an appeal, and where Malaysian agencies come in.

#What Does "This Phone Number Is Banned" Mean on Telegram?
It means Telegram will not let that phone number log in or sign up. The English text in Telegram's Android app, published on Telegram's own translations platform, is "This phone number is banned." Telegram's developer documentation for the login code request describes the same state in one line: "The provided phone number is banned from telegram." Its Terms of Service forbid sending spam or scamming users, and say breaking the terms may lead to a temporary or permanent ban. If you think it is a mistake, Telegram's FAQ sends login problems to its support form. Only Telegram can lift a ban; nobody outside Telegram, including AwareXone, can.
#Which Telegram Notice Are You Looking At?
Several Telegram notices look alike but mean very different things. Match your screen to a row below first. Wording differs between apps, versions and languages, so match the meaning rather than every word.
| What you see | What it means | What to do first |
|---|---|---|
| "This phone number is banned." when you enter your number to log in | Telegram has banned the number itself, so it cannot log in or sign up | Screenshot it, then send one request through telegram.org/support |
| "Too many attempts, please try again later." or "Too many attempts, please try again in" followed by a time | A temporary limit after too many code requests or login tries | Stop tapping. Wait out the time shown, then try once |
| "Sorry, you have deleted and re-created your account too many times recently." | A sign-up limit on that number after repeated deletions | Telegram's message says to wait a few days before signing up again |
| You can log in, but messages to strangers or groups fail and Telegram says your account is limited | Users reported your messages as spam and moderators agreed | Wait it out, or contact @SpamBot if you are sure it is wrong |
| "Your account is frozen" with a "Submit an Appeal" button | The account is restricted after reports. You can read chats but cannot send or post | Tap "Submit an Appeal" in the app before the date the notice shows |
| Your channel, bot or sticker set is banned, but your own account works | Telegram acted on that public content, not on your number | Write to [email protected] if you think it was unfair |
#"Too Many Attempts": A Wait, Not a Ban
This one usually fixes itself. Telegram's developer error list describes the flood error as too many attempts, for example requesting a large number of SMS codes for the same phone number. It is not the ban message.
- Stop requesting codes. If the notice shows a time, wait at least that long before one careful attempt.
- Check any other device where you are still logged in. Telegram's FAQ says it may send the login code to the chat with Telegram, a verified profile with a blue tick, instead of by SMS.
- Enter your number in full international format: for Malaysia, +60 followed by the number without the leading zero.
- Do not wait for a phone call. Telegram says codes read out by phone call are only available to accounts with two-step verification turned on.
#Limited or Frozen: You Can Log In, but You Cannot Talk
Both come from user reports and are handled inside Telegram. The difference is how much you can still do.
A limited account can still send messages to people who have your number saved as a contact, and can reply to anyone who messages you first, according to Telegram's Spam FAQ. Moderators review the spam reports first, and a first limit usually lasts a few days; repeat offences mean longer limits. If you are sure the limit is wrong, contact @SpamBot inside Telegram and explain what happened. Telegram says it will not lift a deserved limit early.
A frozen account is a step further. Telegram's FAQ says that if your account has been restricted because of reports from other users, it is frozen: you can still read your chats, but you cannot send messages or post content. You can appeal directly from the app, moderators review the case, and the account is unfrozen if the restriction was a mistake. When Telegram introduced frozen accounts on 30 April 2025, it said banned accounts would be frozen rather than immediately logged out, so their owners could submit an appeal.
At the time of writing, the desktop app's freeze notice, as published on Telegram's translations platform, is headed "Your account is frozen", mentions "Read-Only Mode", and says to appeal before a stated date or the account will be deleted. The button reads "Submit an Appeal". Note that date down the moment you see it.
#How to Appeal a Banned Telegram Number
There is no appeal button on the ban notice itself, so the request goes to Telegram's login help team. Telegram's FAQ says that if you are having registration or login problems, you should use its support form. Keep it to one clear request.
- Screenshot the notice with your number visible, and note when you first saw it.
- Open telegram.org/support in a browser. At the time of writing the form asks for a description of the problem, your full legal name, your email and your phone number.
- Enter the number exactly as registered, in international format (+60 for Malaysia).
- Say what you see, when it started, which app and device you use, and why you believe the ban is a mistake. Short, factual and polite reads best.
- If your app offers a help option on the notice that opens a pre-filled email to Telegram, you can use it, but leave the technical details in the draft untouched.
- Submit once, then wait. Telegram's FAQ notes that it relies on volunteers for support, so replies are slow and sometimes never come.
- Try logging in again after some days rather than resending.
Telegram also names one social media account for login trouble. Its FAQ says @smstelegram on X is an official account that helps with login problems, and that you can send it the number you use for Telegram. The same FAQ adds that Telegram has no other support accounts on any social media platform. Any other "Telegram Support" profile, page or group is not Telegram.
#Banned Before You Sent a Single Message?
Telegram admits this happens. Its Spam FAQ says some numbers trigger an overly harsh response from its system, either because of their previous owners' activities or because they are certain virtual or VOIP numbers. Telegram suggests contacting @SpamBot and telling it your story if you think that is your case.
If you bought the SIM recently, say so in your appeal, with the date you got it. If you signed up with an online or virtual number, the honest fix is to link Telegram to a real mobile number you control. Do not buy a stream of virtual numbers to get around the block; that looks exactly like what the spam system is built to stop.
#Is It a Ban or a Takeover?
Sometimes the problem is not the ban at all. Telegram's FAQ is blunt about how accounts are identified: the phone number is the only way it identifies a user, so whoever has the number has the account. If someone got your login code, they may have used your account to spam people, and the ban could be the result.
- If your SIM suddenly shows no service, call your telco from another phone. Telegram's FAQ advises asking your provider to block the old SIM and issue a new one with your number.
- If you are still logged in elsewhere, open Settings, then Devices, and end any session you do not recognise.
- Turn on two-step verification under Settings, Privacy and Security. Telegram says the phone number alone is then no longer enough to log in.
Our guide to a hijacked Telegram account covers the takeover side. If you have lost the phone or SIM behind several accounts at once, see recovering accounts without your old email or phone.
#What to Prepare Before You Write to Telegram
You may only get one real look from a volunteer, so gather these first.
- A screenshot of the exact notice, with the number and the date visible.
- The number in international format, and confirmation that the SIM is active and registered to you.
- When you got the SIM, if it is new to you.
- Roughly when you created the account, your username, and any channels or groups you own.
- If you suspect a takeover: when you lost access and any codes you did not request.
- A dated note of when you submitted the form, so you do not resend it in a panic.
#Mistakes That Make a Telegram Ban Harder to Undo
- Hammering the login button, which triggers the flood limit.
- Sending the same appeal many times through the form, email and X in one day.
- Logging in through unofficial or "modified" Telegram apps that promise to skip the ban.
- Deleting and re-creating the account over and over, which Telegram blocks with its own message.
- Carrying on with bulk invites or adverts to strangers. Telegram's Spam FAQ says people report unsolicited links, invites and anything to do with commerce or online popularity.
- Missing the appeal date on a frozen account.
- Paying anyone who says they can "unban", "buka semula" or "解封" your Telegram number.
These offers often appear in BM, English and Chinese under posts about Telegram bans, following the same script as fake Meta support pages: a friendly helper, a fee, then a request for a code.
#Malaysia: Where 997, Cyber999, PDRM and MCMC Fit In
A plain ban stays between you and Telegram. Malaysian agencies come in when money, a crime or your phone line is involved.
- Money lost: if you paid a fake unban service, or someone used your account to trick contacts into paying, call the NSRC hotline on 997 straight away, contact your bank, and make a police report.
- Account takeover: MCMC's complaints page lists hacking under the Computer Crimes Act 1997, enforced by PDRM.
- A security incident: CyberSecurity Malaysia's Cyber999 response centre is the national point of contact for reporting computer security incidents.
- Telco problems: for a SIM replacement you did not ask for, MCMC's page says to contact your service provider first, then the consumer forum, then MCMC at aduan.mcmc.gov.my.
None of these agencies can lift a Telegram ban; Telegram still decides on the account.
#When Expert Recovery Help Makes Sense
Most people can handle a Telegram ban alone: match the notice, send one clear request, and wait. A second opinion helps when a ban, a takeover and a SIM problem are tangled together, or when a business depends on channels tied to the banned number. SocialSafe by AwareXone, AwareXone's recovery service, looks at your screenshots and timeline first and tells you honestly which official route is still open, including when nothing more can be done. The recovery hub explains how a case review works for Telegram and other platforms, and our Trust Center lists what we will never ask for: your login code, your two-step verification password, or your SIM.
