"Your Account Is Frozen" on Telegram: How to Appeal

Telegram says your account is frozen? What read-only mode means, how to appeal through @SpamBot before the date shown, and the unfreeze scams in Malaysia.

10 min read
Short answer

It means Telegram has put your account in read-only mode after reports from other users. Write down the appeal date on the notice, because the account is deleted if you do not appeal before it. Tap Submit an Appeal, which opens the official @SpamBot, and send one honest explanation. Telegram's moderators make the final decision.

Summary
  • A frozen Telegram account has been restricted after reports from other users, so you can still read your chats but cannot send messages or post.
  • Write down the appeal date on the notice straight away, because Telegram says the account will be deleted if you do not appeal before it.
  • Tap Submit an Appeal on the notice, which opens Telegram's official @SpamBot, and send one calm, honest explanation of how you use the account.
  • Nobody can sell you an unfreeze, and anyone who asks for your login code, two-step verification password or payment is not from Telegram.
  • Use only the official Telegram app, because modified clients and unofficial tools can cost you the account for good.
  • Telegram's moderators make the final decision, and some frozen accounts are not restored even after a careful appeal.

You open Telegram and a red banner sits above your chats: "Your account is frozen!" You can scroll through old conversations, but the message box does nothing, and a date sits at the bottom of the notice with the word "deleted" next to it.

The short answer: your account has been restricted after other users reported it, and you get one route back. Tap "Submit an Appeal", which takes you to Telegram's official @SpamBot, and explain honestly how you use the account, well before the date on the notice.

This guide explains what the freeze means, how to write the appeal, what to do while you wait, and the paid "unfreeze" offers to ignore.

#What Does "Your Account Is Frozen" Mean on Telegram?

It means Telegram has put your account in read-only mode after reports from other users. Telegram's FAQ on frozen accounts says that while frozen, you can still read your chats but cannot send messages or post content; you can appeal from the app, moderators review the case, and the account is unfrozen if the restriction was a mistake. The notice sets a date, and Telegram's app says the account will be deleted if you do not appeal before it. Only Telegram can lift a freeze. Nobody outside Telegram, including AwareXone, can do it for you.

#Why Telegram Freezes Accounts Instead of Banning Them

The freeze is a second chance, not a verdict you cannot answer. When Telegram introduced frozen accounts on 30 April 2025, it said that people who send scam or spam messages are detected through moderation tools and user reports and banned. Rather than being logged out straight away, they now get a frozen account in which they cannot contact other users but can submit an appeal for moderators to review.

The usual trigger is reports. Telegram's Terms of Service forbid using the service to send spam or scam users, and its Spam FAQ says people report messages they did not want: unsolicited adverts, links, invites to groups or channels, and anything to do with commerce or online popularity. For private messages, it says, the content matters less than whether the person receiving it found it unwelcome.

#What the Freeze Notice Says, Line by Line

The wording below is the English text from Telegram's own apps, as published on its translations platform. It varies a little between Android, iPhone and desktop, between app versions, and between languages.

Telegram's frozen account notice and what to do at each line, based on the app text Telegram publishes at the time of writing.

On Telegram's translations platform, the Malay version of the title reads "Akaun Anda Dibeku", with the button "Hantar Rayuan". The Simplified Chinese language pack shows "您的账号已被冻结" and "提交申诉". Whichever language you see, the steps are the same.

#Frozen, Limited or Banned: Make Sure You Have the Right Problem

Three Telegram states get mixed up, and each has a different route. A freeze is the only one with an appeal date on the screen.

  • Frozen: you are logged in and can read chats, but cannot send anything. You appeal from the "Submit an Appeal" button before the date shown.
  • Limited: you can still message people who have saved your number and reply to anyone who writes first, according to the Spam FAQ. A first limit usually lasts a few days, and you contact @SpamBot only if you are sure it is wrong.
  • Banned number: you cannot log in at all and see "This phone number is banned." That route is different, and our guide to a banned Telegram phone number covers it.

#How to Submit a Telegram Frozen Account Appeal

The appeal is short, and you usually get one proper look, so prepare before you tap. These steps follow the notice itself and Telegram's own descriptions of the process.

  1. Screenshot the whole notice, including the appeal date. Note the date and time you first saw the banner.
  2. Make sure you are in the official Telegram app from the App Store, Google Play or telegram.org, and that it is up to date.
  3. Tap the banner, then "Submit an Appeal". On Android the notice names the route as @SpamBot, the same bot Telegram's Spam FAQ points to for wrongful limits.
  4. Check that the chat is with @SpamBot exactly, and follow what the bot asks.
  5. When it asks you to explain, write one short, honest account: what you use Telegram for, what you sent recently, and why you believe the freeze is a mistake.
  6. Send it once. Do not start the process again and again while you wait.
  7. Check the app every day or two. Telegram's blog says that if an appeal succeeds, the account is unfrozen and its restrictions lifted. If the banner has gone and you can send a message, it has worked.

#What to Write in the Appeal

Moderators read the reason you give against what they saw in the reports. Plain facts help more than anger or long stories. Here is what to include and what to leave out.

  • Who you are in one line: a personal account, a small business, a community admin.
  • What you normally send, and to whom. For example: "I run a parents' group for my child's school and only message members who joined."
  • If you did message strangers, groups or contacts in bulk, say so and say you have stopped. Telegram's Spam FAQ is clear that it will not release a deserved limit early, so denial rarely helps.
  • If someone else may have used the account, say when you noticed and what you did about it.
  • If the number is new to you, give the date you got the SIM. Telegram's Spam FAQ admits some numbers trigger an overly harsh response because of a previous owner's activity.
  • Leave out threats, insults and demands, and never paste a login code or password into the chat.

#Mistakes That End Frozen Account Appeals

These come up again and again when people describe a failed appeal. None of them needs special knowledge to avoid.

  • Waiting too long. The date on the notice is the end of the road, and the account is deleted after it.
  • Appealing through a bot you found by searching, instead of the "Submit an Appeal" button. Lookalike names are easy to make.
  • Writing "I did nothing" when you sent promotional links or invites to people who never asked for them.
  • Sending the appeal many times in one day, or pasting the same text into every Telegram contact you can find.
  • Installing a "modified" or "premium unlocked" Telegram app because a video says it skips the freeze. Telegram's FAQ recommends official or at least verifiable open-source apps, and a random build can steal your session.
  • Buying a new number and a new account to keep messaging the same people. That repeats the behaviour that was reported.
  • Deleting the account in frustration. Telegram's FAQ says deletion is irreversible.

#Was Your Account Frozen Because Someone Else Used It?

Sometimes the freeze is the aftermath of a takeover. Telegram's FAQ says the phone number is the only way it identifies a user, so whoever has the number has the account. If someone got your login code, they may have sent scam messages to your contacts, and those contacts reported you.

  • Open Settings, then Devices, and end every session you do not recognise, if the frozen app still lets you.
  • Turn on two-step verification under Settings, then Privacy and Security, so the phone number alone is not enough to log in.
  • If your phone suddenly shows no service, call your telco from another phone and ask whether your SIM was replaced.
  • Tell your contacts through another app or a call that the scam messages were not from you.

Mention the takeover in your appeal, with dates. Our guide to a hijacked Telegram account in Malaysia goes through securing the account step by step.

These sellers follow the same script as fake Meta support pages: a helpful stranger, a small fee, then a request for a code that hands them the account.

#If You Lost Money or Shared a Code: Malaysia

A freeze by itself stays between you and Telegram. Malaysian agencies come in when money has gone, a code was shared, or a crime was committed.

  • Money lost to an unfreeze seller, or to someone who used your account to trick contacts: the NSRC's FAQ on the NFCC website says to call your bank's 24-hour hotline or the NSRC on 997 immediately, then make a police report at the nearest station. It adds that NSRC, the police and banks will never ask for your password, PIN, TAC or OTP.
  • Account hacked: MCMC's complaints page lists hacking under the Computer Crimes Act 1997, enforced by PDRM.
  • A phishing link or fake Telegram login page: CyberSecurity Malaysia's Cyber999 centre is the national point of contact for reporting computer security incidents, by online form, email, phone or its app.

None of these agencies can unfreeze a Telegram account. They help with the money and the crime; Telegram still decides on the account.

#When a Case Review Makes Sense

Most people can handle a freeze alone: read the notice, note the date, send one honest appeal through the button, and wait. A second opinion helps when the freeze followed a takeover, when a SIM problem is tangled up in it, or when a business depends on the channels and groups behind the account. SocialSafe by AwareXone, AwareXone's recovery service, looks at your screenshots and timeline first and tells you plainly whether the appeal route is still open, including when there is nothing more to do. The recovery hub explains how a case review works for Telegram, and our Trust Center sets out what we never ask for, starting with your login code and two-step verification password.

#Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a Telegram frozen account appeal take?
Telegram does not publish a review time. Appeal as early as you can, well before the date on the notice, and check the app every day or two for the banner to disappear.
Can I still read my messages while my Telegram account is frozen?
Yes. Telegram's FAQ says a frozen account can still read its chats but cannot send messages or post content.
What happens if my frozen Telegram appeal is rejected?
Telegram does not describe a second appeal route for frozen accounts. If the account is deleted, Telegram says that is irreversible, and signing up again starts a new, empty account.
Does Telegram tell my contacts that my account is frozen?
Telegram does not describe sending any such notice. Tell important contacts yourself through another app or a call, and warn them about messages from new numbers claiming to be you.
Can I make a new Telegram account while the old one is frozen?
Using a new account to keep sending the same messages repeats what was reported, and Telegram's Spam FAQ says repeated offences bring longer blocks. Appeal the frozen account first.
