Reddit Account Suspended or Shadowbanned? What to Do
Reddit account suspended, or posts vanishing with no notice? How to tell a ban from a spam flag, where to appeal within six months, and the scams to avoid.
Check your Reddit inbox first, because a sitewide ban notice gives the reason and length. If posts vanish with no notice, Reddit calls that a spam flag. For either, log in to the affected account in a browser and appeal within six months. A community ban goes to its moderators. Do not open a new account.
Summary- Reddit sends the reason and length of a sitewide ban to your Reddit inbox, so read that notification before you do anything else.
- What people call a shadowban, Reddit calls being flagged for spam or inauthentic activity: your posts, comments and profile stop showing up as expected.
- For a mistaken ban or spam flag, log in to the affected account in a browser and use the appeals page, within six months of the notice.
- A ban from one community comes from its moderators, so you ask them through mod mail rather than appealing to Reddit.
- Opening a new account to keep posting counts as ban evasion, so skip aged account sellers, karma packages and anyone who offers an unban for money.
- Only Reddit can lift a ban, it may limit repeat appeals, and some accounts stay banned after review.

You open Reddit and a banner says your account is banned, or a friend tells you your profile looks empty. Or nothing looks wrong to you, but your comments get no replies and your posts never appear in the community.
The short answer: work out which of four things happened. A sitewide ban comes with an inbox notice and an appeal route. A spam flag, the thing people call a shadowban, has its own appeal page. A community ban goes to that community's moderators. A security lock just needs a password reset.
This guide shows how to tell them apart, how to appeal each one properly, and what to avoid so a fixable problem does not become a permanent one.

#What Should You Do If Reddit Suspended Your Account?
Check your Reddit inbox first. Reddit's help page on accounts banned for breaking the rules says the notification tells you why you were banned and, for a temporary ban, how long it lasts. If you think Reddit got it wrong, follow the appeal instructions in that notification within six months. If there is no notice but your posts and profile are not showing up, Reddit treats that as a spam flag: log in to the affected account in a browser and use the appeals page. Do not open a second account while you wait. Nobody outside Reddit, including AwareXone, can lift a ban for you.
#Is a Reddit Shadowban Real? What Reddit Actually Calls It
"Shadowban" is a search word, not a Reddit term. Reddit's help centre describes the same symptom as an account flagged for spam or inauthentic activity: your posts, comments, chat messages and profile page are not showing up as expected. You can usually still log in and post, which is why it feels invisible.
Reddit uses "banned" and "suspended" for the same sitewide action. The Reddit Rules list "temporary or permanent suspension of accounts" among its enforcement options, while the help pages say "banned". If the message you saw reads "This account has been suspended" or something close, treat it as a sitewide ban. The exact wording varies by app version, web or app, and region.
One more kind of hidden post sits at community level. Reddit's page on ban evasion mentions "automoderator shadow bans": a subreddit's own filters quietly removing your posts there. Reddit does not treat those as community bans, and only that community's moderators can change them.
#Which Reddit Problem Do You Have?
Match what you see to a row below. Reddit's account status overview separates the same situations. Screenshot the screen before you change anything.
| What you see | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A message at the top of the Reddit website or app about your banned status, plus an inbox notification | A temporary or permanent sitewide ban from Reddit's admins | Read the notification for the reason and length; appeal within six months if it is a mistake |
| Posts, comments and profile not showing up for others, with no ban notice | Flagged for spam or inauthentic activity (searched as "shadowban") | Log in to that account in a browser and submit the form on reddit.com/appeals |
| A chat message from a community's moderators saying you are banned there | A community ban; the rest of Reddit still works | Contact that community's moderators through mod mail |
| Posts vanish in one community only, and no one told you | That community's filters or AutoModerator removed them | Read the community rules and ask its moderators |
| A red warning at login asking you to reset your password | A lock as a security precaution | Reset the password through the email on the account |
| You cannot log in and password resets fail | The account may be disabled, or someone else took it | Use Reddit's hacked account request or the account status inquiry |
| "You cannot submit an appeal" on the appeals page | Not documented by Reddit; often no appealable action on the account you are logged in to | Check which account is logged in, then check its inbox for a notice |
#How to Check If Your Reddit Account Is Flagged
Reddit does not publish a self-check tool. A simple test matches its description of the symptom. Log out, or open a private browser window, and visit your own profile and a recent post. If the profile or your recent posts do not appear for a logged-out visitor while they appear for you, that fits a spam flag.
Then narrow it down. If your posts are missing everywhere, the flag is likely account-wide. If they are missing in one community only, it is probably that community's filter, not Reddit. Do not type your Reddit password into any third-party "shadowban checker" site. You never need to log in to anything outside Reddit to run this test.
#Temporary and Permanent Bans: What Changes
Reddit's page on content moderation, enforcement and appeals says enforcement depends on the type and severity of the violation and your history. Some violations lead straight to a permanent ban. For others, a user may first get a warning, then a 3-day ban, a 7-day ban, and then a permanent ban.
- While banned, you cannot vote, post, comment, send chats, report content, create communities, edit posts or comments, or create self-serve ads.
- If you moderate a community, you lose moderator tools and mod mail. A permanent ban may also remove you as a moderator.
- A temporary ban does not change your profile, so other users cannot tell.
- A permanent ban adds a message to your profile telling visitors the account is banned.
For a temporary ban you did earn, the practical path is to wait it out, then read the rule named in the notice before you post again. Reddit's spam policy lists behaviour that often catches people by surprise: repeated posting for exposure, mass messaging, reposting old content for karma, and posting mostly links to a business you benefit from.
#How to Appeal a Reddit Ban or Spam Flag
Reddit says you can appeal within six months of receiving the ban notification. The route differs slightly by type, but these steps cover both.
- Open a web browser (a computer is easiest) and log in to the affected account, not a different one.
- For a sitewide ban, open the notification in your Reddit inbox and follow its appeal instructions.
- For a spam flag, or a ban for spam, inauthentic activity or ban evasion, go to reddit.com/appeals while logged in.
- Explain in a few calm sentences why you think the decision was a mistake. Reddit asks you to say why.
- If you think Reddit linked you to other accounts that were actioned for spam, say so. Reddit's page on bans for spam, inauthentic activity or ban evasion says the same link handles that.
- Submit once and wait for Reddit's decision. Keep checking your Reddit inbox.
#Banned From a Subreddit Instead of Reddit
A community ban is narrower. Reddit says moderators can ban you from their community for breaking its posted rules, and you will get a chat message from them. You can still read the community and stay a member, but you cannot post or comment there.
Reddit's page on disputes with moderators says to contact them through mod mail to appeal a community ban. If they refuse, Reddit suggests finding a similar community. It does not overrule moderators on community rules. Report a moderator only if they are breaking the Reddit Rules or the Moderator Code of Conduct.
#What If the Ban Came After a Hack?
Spam posts or chats you never sent can mean someone else used your account. Reddit's page on hacked or compromised accounts lists the signs: an email saying your password or email changed when you did not change them, authorised apps you do not recognise, unusual IP history on your account activity page, and votes, posts or messages you do not remember.
- Secure the email inbox linked to Reddit first: new password, check forwarding rules, sign out other sessions.
- Reset your Reddit password at reddit.com/password.
- If the email on Reddit was changed, Reddit says you will get an email explaining how to change it back, using the original address.
- Still locked out? Reddit's page on disabled or locked accounts says to submit a request and choose "Security problems / I think my account has been hacked", with the username and your reason for concern.
- Once back in, remove unknown apps, log out all sessions from the account activity page, and turn on two-factor authentication. Save the backup codes offline.
- Only then appeal any ban, and say plainly that the rule-breaking activity happened while someone else had access.
If the attacker also used the account to message your contacts, our guide to a hacked account sending messages to friends covers warning people quickly. For logins you did not recognise, see what to do when someone logged into your account.
A plain security lock is simpler. Reddit's locked account page says you will see a red warning at login and must reset your password to unlock it. Reddit adds that it cannot help if the email on the account is out of date, so keep a working, verified email on Reddit.
#Mistakes That End Reddit Appeals
- Appealing from a different account, or while logged out.
- Sending the same appeal again and again, which Reddit may treat as appeals abuse.
- Opening a new account to keep posting while the appeal is pending.
- Appealing a community ban to Reddit instead of messaging the moderators.
- Letting the six-month window pass while waiting for the ban to lift on its own.
- Appealing a hacked account before you have secured it, so the spam continues.
- Arguing about the rule instead of explaining why your case was a mistake.
#Unban Sellers, Aged Accounts and Other Scams
Once a Reddit account is banned, offers appear: aged accounts with karma, "unban" services, people claiming to know someone at Reddit. They can arrive in English, Bahasa Malaysia or Chinese. Reddit's User Agreement says you may not license, sell or transfer your account without Reddit's written approval. A bought account is also another account, so using it after a ban is ban evasion.
- Nobody outside Reddit can remove a ban. The appeal form is free and you can use it yourself.
- Never give anyone your Reddit password, a login code, a 2FA code or a backup code.
- Do not pay for "karma", votes or "account warming". Reddit's rules count vote manipulation and multiple accounts as disruption.
- Ignore messages claiming to be Reddit staff that push you to a login page outside reddit.com.
#If You Paid Someone or Shared a Code in Malaysia
If money left your account, act on that first. The NSRC's FAQ on the NFCC website says to contact your bank's 24-hour hotline or the NSRC on 997 as soon as you notice an unauthorised transaction. It also tells victims to make a police report.
A fake Reddit login page or a phishing message can be reported to CyberSecurity Malaysia's Cyber999 service by online form, email, phone or its mobile app. If you shared a code and your phone then shows "No service", call your carrier from another phone and ask whether your SIM was replaced.
#When a Case Review Makes Sense
Most Reddit problems can be handled alone with the steps above, and only Reddit decides the outcome. Some accounts stay banned after review. A second look helps when a hack and a ban are tangled together, when the email on the account is gone, or when the account matters to your work. SocialSafe by AwareXone, our recovery service, looks at the case first and tells you honestly whether an official route is still open. You can read how we handle cases on our social media problem solutions page, and the Trust Center sets out what we will never ask for, starting with your password and codes.
Ranking drops on other platforms feel similar but work differently; our piece on an Instagram shadowban and falling reach explains that side. For bans on X, see appealing an X suspension.
