Short answer

Try a saved backup code first. If you are still logged in to Reddit on a computer, open Settings, then Account authorization, then Access your backup codes to create new ones. You can also connect Google or Apple sign-in from a logged-in session. If codes are failing, update your authenticator app and check your device time and time zone.

Summary
  • Use a saved backup code in place of the authenticator code when you log in.
  • If you are logged in on a computer, you can generate new backup codes in Settings.
  • From a logged-in session, you can connect Google or Apple sign-in and use that to log in.
  • Check that your authenticator app is up to date and your device clock and time zone are right.
  • Backup codes can currently only be managed in a computer web browser.

Two-factor authentication on Reddit asks for a code from an authenticator app each time you log in on a new device. It is a good protection, but losing your phone or deleting the app can lock you out. Reddit lists a small number of ways back in, and backup codes are the most important. This guide explains each option Reddit gives and how to set things up so it does not happen again.

#What are my options?

What you haveOption Reddit gives
Saved backup codesUse one as your authentication code
Reddit logged in on a computerGenerate new backup codes in Settings
Reddit logged in somewhereConnect Google or Apple sign-in, then log in with it elsewhere
The authenticator app, but codes failUpdate the app and check your device time and time zone

These options come from Reddit's help page on two-factor login problems (Reddit Help).

#How do I use a backup code?

When you set up two-factor authentication, Reddit gave you a set of backup codes to write down. If you still have them, enter one in place of the authentication code when you log in. Reddit says each code can be used once (Reddit Help).

#How do I make new backup codes?

Reddit says you can currently only manage two-factor authentication and get backup codes by logging in to Reddit in a computer's web browser. Even if the app on your phone is locked out, you may still be logged in on a computer (Reddit Help).

  1. On reddit.com, click your username at the top right and select Settings.
  2. Under Account authorization, click Access your backup codes.
  3. Enter your password and click Continue.
  4. Reddit generates ten backup codes, each usable once.

On Old Reddit, Reddit says to click preferences, go to the password and email tab, and click the generate link next to backup codes under two-factor authentication.

#Can I log in with Google or Apple instead?

Reddit says that if you are logged in somewhere, you can visit your account settings and connect your Google account or Apple ID to your Reddit account. You can then log in to Reddit with that connected account through a different browser or app (Reddit Help).

#Why are my authenticator codes not working?

If you still have the authenticator app but the codes are rejected, Reddit suggests checking that the app is updated to the current version, and that your device's time is correct and set to the right time zone. Authenticator codes depend on the clock, so a wrong time can make every code fail.

If you use a password manager that also stores one-time codes, check it before assuming the codes are gone. Some people set up Reddit's authenticator inside a password manager rather than a separate app, and the codes will still be there on any device where that manager is signed in.

#What if none of these work?

Reddit's two-factor help page lists only the options above. If you have no backup codes, no logged-in session and no working authenticator, getting back in may not be possible. If you think someone else turned on two-factor authentication on your account, treat it as a possible hack and follow Reddit's hacked account steps, which include submitting a request under Security problems (Reddit Help). Our guide on a hacked or locked Reddit account explains that route.

#How do I avoid being locked out again?

  • Write your backup codes down and keep them somewhere safe, or store them in a password manager, as Reddit recommends.
  • Stay logged in on a trusted computer so you can generate new codes if needed.
  • Connect Google or Apple sign-in as another way in.
  • Move or back up your authenticator app before changing phones.
  • Keep a verified email on the account for password resets.

#Why might I suddenly be asked for a code?

Two-factor prompts usually appear when you log in on a new device or browser, or after you have been signed out. Reddit's backup code guidance gives a common example of how people get locked out: getting a new phone and throwing out the old one that had the authenticator app on it (Reddit Help). Before you change or reset a phone, open your authenticator app and check whether it can move or back up its codes, and make sure you have a current set of Reddit backup codes.

#What should I do once I am back in?

  1. Generate a new set of backup codes and store them in a password manager or another safe place.
  2. Check that the email on your account is current and verified, so password resets reach you.
  3. Connect Google or Apple sign-in if you want an extra way in.
  4. Review your account activity and log out of sessions you do not recognise.
  5. If anything looks changed that you did not change, follow Reddit's hacked account steps.

Reddit's security advice also includes using a strong, unique password and a password manager, and not sharing your account with other people.

#Common mistakes

  • Looking for backup codes in the mobile app, when Reddit says they are managed in a computer browser.
  • Generating new codes and keeping the old list, which no longer works.
  • Ignoring the device clock when codes keep failing.
  • Giving your login details to someone who promises to remove two-factor authentication.

#What are the realistic limits?

Reddit controls account access, and its two-factor help lists a fixed set of options. Recovery depends on having backup codes, a logged-in session or a connected Google or Apple sign-in. If your problem is a password reset email that does not arrive, see Reddit password reset email not arriving.
