Your ads stopped. You open Ads Manager and your ad account is disabled, with a message that a payment failed or that your account is unsettled. Customers are not seeing your campaign, and you want to know whether Pay now will fix it or whether something else is wrong.

This guide follows Meta's own Business Help Centre. It shows what happens when a payment fails, the exact route to pay the balance, the common reasons a payment fails and what to do when ads stay paused. We do not quote any amounts, limits or billing dates, because those differ by account and Meta changes them. We cannot promise your account will return, and the pages we read describe no outside service that can force it. A wrong or repeated step can cost you the account, so know what you are doing before you start.

#What Does Meta Say Happens When a Payment Fails?

Meta's Fix a failed payment issue on Meta page says that when the payment method you use to run ads on Facebook, Messenger, Instagram or Meta Audience Network fails, your ads are paused and your ad account will be disabled until you have paid the amount due. It says you will not receive any additional charges until you pay the amount due, and that you may see an error message in Billing and payments saying your account is unsettled.

So the account is not necessarily in trouble for breaking an advertising rule. The page describes a billing problem with a billing fix. If the account was disabled for another reason, such as a policy decision, the page does not describe that case, and a payment will not change it.

#How Do I Pay My Balance With Pay Now?

The page says you may be able to fix an ad account that has been disabled because of failed payments by paying your automatic billing balance. These are its steps.

  1. Go to Billing and payments.
  2. Select the ad account.
  3. Click Payment methods.
  4. Click Pay now.
  5. Choose an existing payment method or add a new one.

The page adds that if the payment continues to fail, you should try again later with a different card. It also has a note about advertisers in India, saying they may not be able to use Pay now or Add funds if the ad account is disabled, so read the page for your own country.

#What Should I Check Before I Choose a Payment Method?

The page says an initial payment method and at least one valid payment option are essential to run ads. If there is a problem with your primary payment method, it says you may want to add backup payment methods or add a new valid one. Before you choose, it lists these checks.

  • Confirm that your chosen payment method is supported in your country.
  • Make sure the payment method is enabled for online transactions.
  • If you use a card, make sure it has a security code, because the page says Meta only accepts cards with one.
  • Confirm that your payment method is connected to the phone number where you may be expecting a one-time password, and that you have access to the phone.
  • Confirm that the payment method is not already added to multiple ad accounts. The page says Meta may limit the number of ad accounts that can add the same payment method.
  • Check the expiry dates on your cards.
  • Verify that the account number, card number, expiry date, security code and bank name are accurate.
  • Make sure the payment method has sufficient funds.

#What If I Use Available Funds Instead of Pay Now?

The page says you can sometimes fix a payment issue by adding to your available funds. If your account is set up for available funds only, rather than automatic billing, it says ad delivery will be disrupted if the available funds are not enough. The steps are: go to Billing and payments, select the ad account, click Payment methods and click Add funds.

It also says that if your account is set up for automatic billing, adding money to your available funds is not mandatory to run ads. And if your account is disabled because of failed payment and you use Add funds, it says it may take a little while for the account to return to a good state. Do not press the button again and again while you wait.

#What Happens After I Pay?

The page says that once you have paid your due balance or added sufficient funds, Meta will resume any active or scheduled ads. It also says it will attempt to make up for any lost time, to meet the original campaign dates and budgets you set. It does not promise that every campaign will recover fully, so check your campaigns after the payment goes through.

#Why Did My Payment Fail?

The page lists common reasons for a failed payment and what to try. Use the table to match the message you see.

What you seeWhat the page says it may meanWhat the page says to try
Payment method not supportedThe method is not available in your country, or the same method is on more ad accounts than Meta allowsCheck availability in your country, and check the number of ad accounts that use the method

Expiry date invalidThe expiry date is wrongCheck it and update your payment details, or add a new payment method
Card could not be verifiedThe card check may have failed, for example because of a wrong code or a one-time password that was not deliveredContact your financial institution or add a new payment method
We could not charge your payment methodCard details may be wrongEnter details correctly and update them as needed, or add a new payment method
Charge declined by your financial institutionYour bank may decline on its own internal rulesConfirm your details, update them, and contact your financial institution if it continues
Connection errorThe connection dropped or timed out between Meta's processing partner and your bankTry later or use a different payment method
Declined for insufficient fundsYour bank declined for insufficient funds or a limit on the methodAdd sufficient funds before you try again, or add a method that has them

#What If I Pay by Online Banking or Direct Debit?

Two shorter Meta pages cover bank payments. Meta's Troubleshoot a declined payment from your bank account page says that if an online banking payment is declined, Meta stops the campaigns on your account until you have paid the amount you owe. It gives two options. You can pay the remaining balance by adding a new payment method and using it to pay your current balance manually, or you can contact your bank to find out why the payment was declined, if the online banking information you entered at registration is correct. It adds a note that you cannot add a different bank account at this time.

Meta's Online banking account not accepted as a payment method for Meta Ads page gives two common reasons for a rejected bank account: the account you gave bank details for has been closed, or your bank does not allow direct debit payments from your account, in which case you should contact your bank. It says you may need to add a different online banking account or payment method, by going to Payment settings, clicking Add payment method and selecting Online banking. If you still cannot add an approved bank account, it says to let Meta know.

#Why Are My Ads Still Paused After I Paid?

The first page says that if your ads are still paused after you have paid the amount due, you may have reached your daily spending limit, which Meta sets. This is a different cause from a failed payment.

Meta's How budgets, spending limits, prepaid balance limits and your payment threshold differ page explains the difference. It says Meta sets a daily spending limit for most advertisers, based on advertising and payment history, and that when you reach it, your ads pause. It also says your ads will not run beyond your daily spending limit or any ad account spending limit set by an admin. It says only budgets, spending limits and available funds will affect or pause your ads.

#How Do I Stop It Happening Again?

The page gives a set of tips to prevent future payment issues. These are the ones that you control.

  • Confirm that your payment methods are active and have not been restricted by your bank.
  • Add a backup payment method, so your ads are not paused when the primary one fails.
  • Check the expiry dates of your cards.
  • Confirm that the payment method is connected to the phone number where you expect a one-time password.
  • Regularly check that your card has enough funds.
  • If your account is set up for available funds only, set up auto-reload so you do not run out.

#What If This Is Not a Payment Problem?

If the payment is settled and the ad account is still disabled, the cause may be something else, such as an advertising policy decision or a security problem. Our guide on a disabled Meta ad account and Business Manager covers that case. If the charges themselves look wrong, or you see activity you did not start, our guide on ad spend after a Business Manager hack explains the first steps.

#Watch for Fake Billing Messages

A failed payment is the moment scammers wait for. A message or email may say your ad account is disabled and tell you to click a link to pay at once. Do not use that link. Go to Billing and payments inside your own Meta account, as the page describes, and check the status there. Never give your card code, your bank's one-time password or your login to anyone who contacts you.

#What If Pay Now Still Does Not Work?

The page says that if you have tried its recommendations but continue to have failed payment issues, you can contact Meta in Business Support Home, and that you click Contact support at the bottom of the page. The second page says the same route is for requesting a review of your billing or spending options if you disagree with them.

#What the Pages Do Not Say

The pages we read do not say exactly how long an account takes to return after payment, beyond that it may take a little while. They do not say why a particular payment was declined, since that can be your bank's own decision. They do not promise that every ad account can be reopened, and they do not say what happens if the payment problem is combined with another restriction. We do not know your account's status and will not guess.

#When It Is Safer to Get Expert Help

Some people sort this out alone, and the official steps stay first. The risks are plain. A card added to several ad accounts can cause trouble, because the page says Meta may limit the number of ad accounts that can use the same payment method. A card entered on a fake billing page can expose it. And people who offer to reopen the account for you, or to pay on your behalf, are a risk to expect, because a failed payment is a moment when business owners are under pressure.

If you are unsure about any step, or the ads matter to your income or your business, handing the case to an experienced team such as AwareXone is the safer choice. We can help you check that the problem really is billing, follow the official route in the right order and keep a clear record. See our Business Manager recovery help page, and use the Apply for Case Review button at the end of this guide.

#When a Case Review Makes Sense

If you have paid and the account is still disabled, or if several ad accounts or Business Manager assets are affected, a review can help you decide what to do first. SocialSafe by AwareXone is a Malaysia-based service, independent of Meta, that helps you use the official routes. We never ask for your password, card details or login codes, and we cannot change Meta's decisions. See how we work on our trust page.
