Short answer

Instagram's help page currently says only users with a public account and 1,000 followers or more can start Live. It also says earlier removed posts or a new account may block it, and that Live is off by default for Teen Accounts. Check Account Status in Settings to see removed content and features you can't use.

  • The page also says newly created accounts may not be able to go Live, and that starting Live is off by default for Teen Accounts.

You open Instagram to go live for your shop or your followers, and the Live option is not there. Your first thought may be a ban, or a shadowban. Instagram's own pages list several other reasons, and only one of them is about something you posted. Checking them in the right order saves you from changing things you do not need to change.

This guide follows Instagram's help pages on starting a live video, on Live, on Teen Accounts and on Account Status. It does not promise that a missing Live option can be fixed. Official steps come first, and Instagram decides. One wrong step can cost you the account, so know what you are doing before you start, especially if you are tempted to switch settings, buy followers or sign in on third party tools.

#Quick Answer: Why Is the Live Option Missing?

The page Start a live video on Instagram currently says: "Only Instagram users who have a public account with 1,000 followers or more will be able to start a Live video." The Live help page repeats it as a note. The start page then adds that you may not be able to start Live if you previously posted something that was removed for going against the Community Standards, and that newly created accounts may not be able to go Live. It points you to your account status to learn more about your permissions.

#Diagnostic Table: Match Your Case

Work down the table. Each row comes from an Instagram page, and the last column says where to look. Followers and Teen Account settings come first, because they are the quickest to check.

Possible causeWhat the page saysWhere to check
Account is privateOnly users with a public account and 1,000 followers or more can start LiveYour profile and its privacy setting
Fewer than 1,000 followersThe same sentence, currently, on the Live and start pagesYour follower count on your profile
Teen AccountThe ability to start a live video is off by default for Teen Accounts. Teens under 16 need a parent's or guardian's permission to turn it on, and teens 16 to 17 can turn it on without permissionThe Teen Account settings, with a parent or guardian if you are under 16
New accountNewly created accounts may not be able to go LiveThe page gives no age or time, so we do not state one
Earlier removed contentYou may not be able to start Live if you previously posted something removed for going against the Community StandardsAccount Status, then Removed content
App or device issueNot covered by the pages we readCheck for an app update, then Instagram's help pages

Only one of those rows concerns a removal or a penalty. Several of the rest describe plain eligibility rules, so a missing Live option does not by itself show a ban or a shadowban. Instagram's pages do not link the two.

#How to Check Account Status

Instagram's page Check your Account Status on Instagram says Account Status shows whether you have posted something that goes against the Community Standards, and whether it may lead to restrictions such as features you can no longer use. For the computer route, it gives these steps.

  1. Click More in the bottom left, then click Settings.
  2. Click Account Status below More info and support.
  3. Select Removed content to view any content removed for going against the Community Standards.
  4. Select Features you can't use to see features you cannot use, and take action to resolve the issue, such as appealing content removed for going against the Community Standards or not following the Terms of Use.
  5. Select Request a review if you do not think Instagram should have taken down your content.

The page says that if you repeatedly post content that is removed for going against the Community Standards, you may lose access to your account. It adds that in most cases you will get a warning first. We read only the computer steps on that page, so the phone menu may use different wording. Use the labels you see on your own screen.

#If You Are Under 18

The page About Instagram Teen Accounts says Teen Accounts are for teens 13 to 17 and come with protective settings. Under live broadcast restrictions it says the ability to start a live broadcast is off by default, and that this setting will be gradually introduced for teens, so some teens may not have it turned off by default yet. It also says teens under 16 need a parent's or guardian's permission to update settings to be less protective, while teens 16 to 17 can change them unless the account is supervised. If you are under 16, speak to a parent or guardian before you change anything.

#What the Live Pages Say About Starting

For the computer route, the start page says to open instagram.com, click Create, select Live video, enter a title and choose an audience. It says Practice will not start the live for anyone and Public will take you live to your followers. It then describes a unique URL and stream key for use in streaming software, and says to click Go live in Live Producer. We could read only that computer description, so we do not list phone steps. If the Create menu on the computer shows no Live video option either, the eligibility table above is where to look.

The start page also says that when you save a live video to your profile or download it from the Live Archive, only the live video is saved, and not comments, likes or viewers.

#What the Pages Do Not Say

  • They give no time in which a new account becomes eligible.
  • They do not say whether the follower requirement is the same in every country.
  • They do not say how long a removal blocks Live, or whether an appeal restores it.
  • They do not say that a missing Live option is a shadowban. Our guide on Instagram shadowban and reduced reach covers that question separately.
  • They do not give a way to ask Instagram to waive the follower requirement.

#A Short Checklist Before You Contact Anyone

  • Confirm the account is public and check the follower count against the figure the page currently shows.
  • If you are under 18, check the Teen Account setting with a parent or guardian.
  • Open Account Status and read Removed content and Features you can't use.
  • If something was removed and you think it was a mistake, use Request a review from the same screen.
  • Do not buy followers or install apps that promise Live access. The pages describe none, and they would put the account at risk.

If your account status shows a warning or a restriction, our guide on Instagram account status at risk of being disabled explains the warning screens. If your posts were removed, see Instagram post removed for community guidelines.

#When It Is Safer to Get Expert Help

Some people check these pages and find a simple rule, and the official steps come first. The risks are plain. Appealing the wrong item, or the same item again and again, may not address the real problem. Changing a Teen Account setting without a parent can cause trouble. Buying followers to reach the number can put the account at risk. And anyone who offers to switch Live on for a payment is offering something Instagram's pages do not describe.

If your shop depends on Live selling, your account status shows removed content, or you are unsure which row of the table is yours, handing the case to an experienced team such as AwareXone is the safer choice. We can help you read your Account Status and plan the next step calmly, but we cannot promise to restore Live. See our Instagram account recovery help page, and use the Apply for Case Review button at the end of this guide.

#When a Case Review Makes Sense

A review helps when Account Status shows removed content you believe was a mistake, or when several features have gone at once. SocialSafe by AwareXone is a Malaysia-based service, independent of Instagram, that helps you use the official routes. We never ask for your password or any code. See how we work on our trust page.
