Deleted or Deactivated Instagram: Can You Restore It?
Deactivated, pending deletion or deleted Instagram account? How to tell which, the 30-day window to cancel, and what to do if a hacker deleted it.
It depends on the state. A deactivated account comes back with your photos, comments and likes as soon as you log in. A deletion request can be cancelled by logging in before the deadline, which Instagram gives as 30 days. Once deletion completes, nobody can restore it. If a hacker deleted it, regain access quickly through instagram.com/hacked.
Summary- A deactivated Instagram account is only hidden, and it comes back with your photos, comments and likes as soon as you log back in.
- A deletion request can be cancelled by logging back in before the deadline, which Instagram gives as 30 days, though the period varies by region.
- Once the deletion period ends, the account and its information are permanently deleted, and Instagram says there is no way to restore it.
- If a hacker deleted or deactivated your account, regain access through instagram.com/hacked or the login link quickly, because logging in stops a pending deletion.
- Instagram never messages you about your account in the app, so ignore anyone selling recovery of permanently deleted accounts or asking for your password or codes.
- Only Instagram controls deletion and restoration, and a disabled account is a separate problem that needs an appeal, not a login.

You took a break from Instagram, or pressed delete in a bad moment, or someone else got into your account and now it has vanished. Friends say your profile cannot be found, and you want to know whether it is still there somewhere.
The answer depends on which of three states the account is in. A deactivated account comes back the moment you log in. An account waiting to be deleted can still be saved by logging in before the deadline. A permanently deleted account cannot be restored by anyone.
This guide shows how to tell the three apart, what to do in each case, what to do if a hacker requested the deletion, and which recovery offers to ignore.

#Can You Restore a Deleted or Deactivated Instagram Account?
Yes, if it is deactivated or still inside the deletion window; no, once deletion is complete. Instagram's page on temporarily deactivating a profile says a deactivated account's photos, comments and likes stay hidden until you reactivate it by logging back in. Instagram's help page on deleting Edits, which is part of Instagram, says you can cancel an Instagram deletion request before the 30-day deadline by logging back in. After that period, Instagram's page on permanently deleting a profile says the profile and its information are permanently deleted and cannot be retrieved. So the first job is simple: try to log in with the official app or at instagram.com, and use "Forgot password?" if you need to. Nobody outside Instagram, including AwareXone, can bring back an account after deletion completes.
#Deactivated, Pending Deletion, Deleted or Disabled: Which Is Yours?
People use "deleted" for four different situations, and each has a different way back. Two plain definitions help: deactivation hides an account and keeps everything, while deletion removes the account for good once a waiting period ends. A disabled account is different again, because Instagram itself turned it off.
| State | How it happens | What others see | Can it come back? | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Temporarily deactivated | Someone logged in and chose "Deactivate account" under "Deactivation or deletion" | Your photos, comments and likes are hidden | Yes, whenever you log back in | Log in normally; if you cannot, use the login help or hacked routes below |
| Deletion requested, still in the window | Someone logged in and chose "Delete account" | The account is not accessible to other people | Yes, if you log back in before the deadline | Log in as soon as possible to cancel the request |
| Permanently deleted | The deletion period ended without anyone logging in | Nothing; the profile and content are gone | No; Instagram says there is no way to restore it | Sign up again, and try for the old username if it is free |
| Disabled by Instagram | Instagram decided the account broke its rules, or applied a local age rule | The account is no longer visible | Sometimes, through a review | Log in and follow the on-screen instructions to ask for a review |
One quick test separates the disabled case. Instagram's page on disabled accounts says a disabled account shows a message telling you so when you try to log in. If you see no such message, Instagram lists three other explanations: a login problem, someone else gaining access, or the account being deleted by you or someone with your password. If you do see a disabled notice, the steps in this guide will not help; our guide to appealing a disabled Instagram account covers that route.
#Decision Guide: Find Your Next Step
Work down this list and stop at the first line that fits. The screens you see may be worded slightly differently depending on your app version, language and region.
- Can you log in with your username and password? Yes: log in. A deactivated account reactivates, and a pending deletion is cancelled. Stop here, then secure the account.
- No, the password fails. Tap "Forgot password?" and choose "Send login link" to the email or phone on the account. If the link arrives, use it and log in.
- No link arrives, or the email and phone are no longer yours. Check your inbox for an Instagram email about a changed email address, then go to instagram.com/hacked and follow the steps there.
- You see a disabled notice. This is an enforcement decision, not a deletion. Follow the on-screen review option instead.
- More than the deletion period has passed and nothing works. The account is almost certainly gone for good. Move to the section on starting again.
#How to Reactivate a Deactivated Instagram Account
Reactivation is simply logging in. There is no form to fill in and no appeal. Instagram's deactivation page says your content stays hidden until you log back in, so the same app, browser or computer you normally use will work.
- Open the Instagram app or type instagram.com into your browser yourself.
- Log in with your usual username, email or phone number and password.
- If the password has been forgotten, use "Forgot password?" rather than guessing repeatedly.
- After you are in, check that your email and phone number in Accounts Center are still yours.
Keep one rule in mind if you plan to step away again: Instagram says you can only deactivate your profile once a week, and you need to be able to log in to do it.
#How to Cancel a Pending Instagram Deletion
A deletion request is not instant. Instagram says that after 30 days from the request, the profile and all its information are permanently deleted, and that during those 30 days the content is not accessible to other people. Its deletion page adds a note that matters for readers outside the United States: the number of days you can cancel a deletion varies by region. Treat the deadline as shorter than you hope, and act today.
- Log in to the account on the Instagram app or at instagram.com.
- If Instagram shows a screen about the pending deletion, follow the option to keep the account. At the time of writing, the help pages do not quote the exact label, so read the screen carefully.
- Check from a friend's account that your posts and followers are visible again.
#When Deletion Is Complete: What Is Gone and What Is Not
Once the window has passed, Instagram's disabled-accounts page says plainly that if your account was deleted, there is no way to restore it. The deletion page explains that your profile, photos, videos, comments, likes and followers are permanently removed. It also says deletion can take up to 90 days to complete, and that copies may stay in disaster-recovery backups or be kept for legal reasons. Those copies are not a way back.
What you can do is start again. Instagram says you can sign up again with the same username, or add that username to another profile, as long as nobody new has taken it. You can also create a new account with the same email address you used before. There is one exception: if a profile was removed for breaking the Community Standards, you may not be able to sign up again with the same username. If the name has already gone to someone else, our guide to claiming a username that is already taken explains what Instagram allows.
#What If a Hacker Deleted or Deactivated Your Account?
A hacker can do this because they are logged in. Instagram's deletion page says it cannot delete a profile for anyone, and that you must be able to log in to request deletion. The same rule works in your favour: logging back in is what cancels a pending deletion and reactivates a deactivated account. So the whole task is to regain access before the window closes.
- Search your inbox, including spam, for an email from [email protected] saying your email address was changed. Instagram's hacked profile page says you may be able to undo the change by selecting "secure my account" in that message.
- Request a login link: on the login screen tap "Forgot password?", enter your username, email or phone, tap "Send login link", complete the captcha and open the link.
- If you no longer control the email or phone, go to instagram.com/hacked from a browser and follow the on-screen steps. Instagram's hacked account hub points every hacked user there.
- When asked, give a secure email address that only you can access. Instagram may ask for the email or phone you signed up with and the device you used at sign-up, or a video selfie turning your head if the account has photos of you.
- The moment you are back in, change your password, turn on two-factor authentication, remove linked accounts you do not recognise and revoke suspicious third-party apps.
Instagram says a video selfie is never shown on Instagram and is deleted within 30 days, and that you can submit a new video if the first one could not be confirmed. If the attacker also changed the email and phone number, our guide to an Instagram account hacked with the email and phone changed goes through that situation in detail.
In Malaysia, check your phone too. If it suddenly shows "No service" while Instagram codes stop arriving, call your mobile carrier from another phone and ask whether your SIM was replaced. Secure your email account before anything else, because whoever controls that inbox can reset your Instagram again.
#Evidence Checklist Before You Ask Instagram for Help
- Your exact username, plus any older usernames the account used.
- The email address and phone number you signed up with, and which ones are on the account now.
- The type of device you used when you created the account, such as iPhone or Android.
- The date you last had access, and roughly when the account disappeared.
- Screenshots or forwarded copies of every Instagram email about email, phone, password or deletion changes.
- A secure email address that nobody else can open, for Instagram's replies.
#Mistakes That Waste the Deletion Window
- Waiting to see whether the account returns by itself. A pending deletion only stops when someone logs in.
- Assuming you have exactly 30 days. Instagram says the cancellation period varies by region.
- Opening a replacement account first and forgetting the old one, which may still be inside its window.
- Guessing passwords again and again instead of requesting one login link.
- Giving your login details to someone who says they can stop the deletion for you.
- Treating a disabled notice as a deletion, and missing the review option it offers.
To check whether an email really came from Instagram, its page on recent emails says you can view official security emails from the last 14 days under Accounts Center, then "Password and security", then "Recent emails". Official security emails come only from addresses ending in @support.facebook.com, @support.instagram.com, @facebookmail.com, @mail.instagram.com or @global.metamail.com. Our guide to fake Meta support accounts shows how these scams usually open.
#If You Paid a Recovery Seller or Shared a Code
Deal with the money first. The NSRC's FAQ on the NFCC website says to contact your bank's 24-hour hotline or the NSRC on 997 as soon as you discover the fraud, then make a police report at the nearest station within 24 hours. The 997 line runs from 8.00am to 8.00pm every day, including public holidays. The same FAQ says NSRC, PDRM, MCMC, BNM and banks will not ask for your password, PIN, TAC or OTP.
If you entered your Instagram password on a fake page, change it and report the page to CyberSecurity Malaysia's Cyber999 incident response centre, which takes reports by online form, email, phone or its mobile app.
#When a Case Review Makes Sense
Most deactivated accounts and pending deletions need nothing more than a successful login, and a permanently deleted account cannot be brought back by anyone. A second opinion helps in the narrow space between: a hacker requested deletion, the email and phone have been changed, and the window is running out, or the account carried a business you cannot easily rebuild. SocialSafe by AwareXone, our recovery service, looks at the case before anything is agreed and works only through Instagram's own recovery routes, which you can also use yourself. If the account is already past its deletion period, we will tell you so. You can read how we approach Instagram account recovery, and our Trust Center explains why we never ask for your password or login codes.
