You open Discord and the account is suspended. The screen mentions a Minimum Age Requirements violation, and you know you are old enough, or your teenager is. Your server and your friends are behind that login, so it feels urgent. The good news is that Discord publishes an appeal route for exactly this case, and it starts inside the app.

This guide follows Discord's own help pages. It separates three situations that look alike: a lock for the minimum age, a teen age group that is wrong, and a message that only pretends to come from Discord. It sets out the steps the pages describe, compares the age methods, and says plainly what the pages do not cover. Confirm only your real age group. Discord's Why is Discord asking for my birthday? page says that if it learns you may not be old enough, your account will be permanently suspended, and the appeal described here is for people who do meet the age requirement. One wrong step can cost you the account, so know what you are doing before you start.

#Quick Answer: Can You Appeal a Minimum Age Lock?

Yes, if you meet the minimum age for your region. Discord's lockout help page says that you can appeal a banned account by logging in to the locked account, opening the Minimum Age Requirements card under Active Violations, and pressing the button worded "Confirm you meet the minimum age requirement in your region". You then choose a method from the options Discord shows. We cannot promise the outcome, because Discord decides it.

#Which Screen Are You Looking At?

The same words, age and confirm, appear in three different places. A warning on your account standing is a different case, covered in our guide on Discord account standing.

What you seeWhat it points toWhere the pages send you
Your account is suspended, with an Active Violations card for Minimum Age RequirementsA minimum age lockOpen the card and press the confirm button, as the lockout page describes
You can log in, but Account Status shows an unconfirmed age group, or you cannot open an age-restricted spaceAn age group question, not a lockUser Settings, then Account Status, then the Confirm Age button, as the age group page describes
You are in the teen age group but you are an adultA wrong age groupAccount Status, then Retry, then choose a different method, as the age group page describes
An email or text tells you to confirm your age through a linkNot from DiscordDo not select the link. The age group page says Discord will never ask this way

#How to Appeal a Minimum Age Requirements Violation

The lockout page lays out five steps. We give them here in the same order, with the wording the page uses. Discord's screens change, so follow the live page if yours looks different.

  1. Log in to your locked Discord account.
  2. Locate your Active Violations and open the Minimum Age Requirements violation card.
  3. Press the button worded "Confirm you meet the minimum age requirement in your region" to start the appeal process.
  4. Choose a method to confirm your age group from the options shown, and follow the detailed instructions. The page says the options depend on factors such as your region or device, so they may not be the same for everyone.
  5. If Discord determines that you do meet the requirement, the page says you will see "You're all set" at the top of your Active Violations screen, and that you can log back in because your access should be fully restored.

The page adds a note for the other result. If Discord determines you do not meet the minimum age requirement in your region, a notice appears at the top of the screen and you are asked to retry confirming your age group. The page currently says a determination that you meet the requirement is typically processed within seconds, which is not a promise for your case.

#How to Confirm Your Age Group From Account Status

If you are not locked out but Discord wants you to confirm your age group, the page How to Confirm Your Age Group on Discord describes a different start point. Open User Settings, then Account Status. You will see your current age group status and a Confirm Age button or link. You can also begin from a prompt if you tried to open age-restricted content, spaces or settings.

The page explains why this may happen. For most users, it says, Discord's age estimation model places the account in an age group automatically and no confirmation is needed. Discord lists two likely reasons to confirm: it does not have enough information to place your account yet and you want access to age-restricted content, spaces or settings now, or your account was placed in the wrong age group. The page says age estimation works by looking at patterns, so some accounts land in the wrong group, which you can fix without contacting support.

For a teen account, the page says Discord applies additional safety protections automatically, such as filtering sensitive content and restricting access to age-restricted spaces. Core features such as messaging friends and joining servers that are not age-restricted stay the same.

#Age Methods Compared: What Each Asks For

The age group page lists the methods below. It says what is actually available depends on your region or device, so you may see only some of them, and the methods you see can change after earlier attempts. We list only what the page says about each, and we leave out the amounts it mentions for the card check.

MethodWhat the page says it involvesWhat the page says Discord receives
Apple App StoreYou allow the App Store to share your age range with Discord to tell the adult and teen groups apartYour age range. The page says your exact birthdate is not shared
Google Play StoreYou share your age range from your Google Play accountYour age range. The page says your exact birthdate is not shared
Credit Cardk-ID checks ownership of a credit card. The page says only credit cards are accepted, and that debit and prepaid cards are not eligibleYour age group, or a note that the result was inconclusive. The page says Discord never sees your card details
Google WalletYou use a passport stored in Google Wallet. The page currently says only passports from Brazil, Singapore, Taiwan, the UK and the US are supportedYour age group result and issuing country
Video SelfieA short video or selfie is used to estimate your age. The page says this happens entirely on your deviceThe page says Discord and k-ID never see or store it
ID ScanYou photograph a government-issued ID and take a selfie to match it, through k-IDThe page says Discord only receives your age, and that the ID and selfie are deleted once your age is confirmed
AgeKeyA reusable age passkey set up once through k-ID with a video selfie, an ID scan or a credit cardYour age group, shared when you confirm the AgeKey

The page says you can choose whichever you are most comfortable with. If one method fails, it says you may be offered another, and that in some cases Discord may ask you to complete a second method if it needs more confidence.

#What Discord Says It Does With Your Data

The age group page answers the privacy worry directly in its Before You Start section. It says Discord does not directly handle your documents or images, and that it does not receive or access images, ID documents, credit card details or other information you provide. It says age assurance vendors handle the check and pass back only an age signal, that facial age estimation processing happens on your device, and that images or ID documents are permanently deleted as soon as your age group is confirmed.

The page also says your age group is saved to your Account Status, that you can check it at User Settings, then Account Status, and that it is not shown on your profile or visible to other members in a server. These are Discord's statements about its own process, and we have not tested them.

#If the Result Is Wrong or Does Not Come Back

After you finish a method, the age group page says you will receive a direct message from Discord's official profile with your age group result, and that you can check your status at any time in Account Status. If you completed a method but your age group is still wrong, it says to go to User Settings, then Account Status, tap Retry, and confirm with a different method.

Two limits are worth knowing, both from the same page. It says there may be a limit on how many times you can retry a given method, and it says that if you do not see a method right now, it may become available again later. The page also carries a resolved note about a bug that showed a mismatched age group status, and says to close and refresh the app.

If your account was banned after Discord decided you were under the minimum age, but you are old enough, the age group page sends you back to the lockout page for the appeal. That is the route in the steps above.

#A Message Asking You to Confirm Your Age Is Not From Discord

Age checks are a good cover story for scammers, because the real screens are unfamiliar. The age group page states plainly: "We will never ask you to confirm your age group by email or text." It says age assurance only happens inside the Discord app, and that if you receive a message outside Discord, you should not select any links, because it is not from Discord.

Treat the same rule as a test for anything else. A direct message that offers to confirm your age for you, restore a banned account for a payment, or asks you to log in on another site is outside the routes the pages describe. Our guide on Discord account disabled covers other lock messages.

#Which Rules Apply Where You Live

Discord's Getting the Right Experience for Your Age Group: Find Your Region page says how age groups work may vary depending on where you live. It currently lists articles for Australia, Brazil, the UK and Texas. The birthday page says you must be at least 13, and that in some countries you may need to be as old as 16.

The region page does not list Malaysia. It says that if your region is not listed, there is likely no additional regional requirement beyond Discord's global teen safety protections. We have not read any Malaysian government page on this topic, so we do not state local rules here.

#What the Pages Do Not Say

  • They do not say how long a review takes beyond the line that confirming you meet the requirement is typically processed within seconds.
  • They do not say how many times a method can be retried.
  • They describe no route for anyone under the minimum age for their region, and we do not suggest one.

#When It Is Safer to Get Expert Help

Some people sort this out alone, and the official steps stay first. The risks are plain. Choosing a method that does not suit you can change which methods you are offered next. Sharing a selfie or an ID outside the in-app screens, because a message told you to, can expose it. A mistake about your own age group can turn a fixable lock into a permanent one, as the birthday page describes. And people who offer to restore a banned account for a payment or your login are a risk to expect.

If the account matters to your income, your community or your business, or you are unsure which screen you are looking at, handing the case to an experienced team such as AwareXone is the safer choice. We can help you read the notice, choose the right route and avoid mistakes that cost time. See our social media problem solutions page, and use the Apply for Case Review button at the end of this guide.

#When a Case Review Makes Sense

If you meet the age requirement but the appeal screen does not appear, or you cannot tell whether your lock is an age lock or a different violation, a review can help you decide what to try first. SocialSafe by AwareXone is a Malaysia-based service, independent of Discord, that helps you use the official routes. We never ask for your password, codes or ID photos, and we cannot reverse a lock or promise a result. See how we work on our trust page.
