You open Discord and find a message saying you broke a rule, and your account now reads Limited or At Risk. You may be unable to send images or join voice, and you may not know which of your posts caused it. The natural next question is whether you can appeal and what to press.
This guide follows Discord's own pages. It explains each standing level, why the appeal goes against a violation and not against the standing, how violations expire, and what to do about messages that only look like they come from Discord. One wrong step can cost you the account, so know what you are doing before you start.

#What Do the Standing Levels Mean?
Discord's Discord Warning System page says you can see your account's standing in User Settings > My Account > Standing. It says that when you break the rules and receive a violation, you are brought to the Account Standing section, which summarises your violations and how they have affected your standing.
| Standing | What Discord says |
|---|---|
| All good | No active violations and access to all Discord features |
| Limited | An active violation temporarily limited access to some features. Further violations will result in more or longer limits |
| Very Limited | One or more active violations temporarily limited access to more features for a longer period. Further violations may put the account at risk |
| At Risk | One or more active violations. Any further violations may result in a permanent suspension |
| Permanent suspension | The user no longer has access to Discord due to severe or repeated violations |
The page also says that repeated violations add up to increasingly strong penalties, up to permanent suspension, and that Discord weighs each violation by the severity of the harm. It adds that a user does not have a fixed number of chances.
#Can I Appeal My Standing?
No, not as a whole. The Warning System page answers this directly. It says you cannot appeal your account standing overall, and that you should appeal the specific violations that contribute to your standing.
This is the point people miss. The standing label is a summary, and the violations underneath it are what Discord can review. If you press around the standing screen looking for one button to clear it, you will not find one. Go to the violation.
#What Is the Difference Between a Violation and a Restriction?
The Warning System page says violations and their restrictions are two separate things. A restriction, such as a temporary limit on messaging or posting, may lift before the violation itself fully expires. Until a violation expires, the page says it stays listed under Active Violations and may continue to affect your account standing, even if its restriction is no longer active.
So seeing your features come back does not mean your standing is clear. Check the Active Violations section in your Standing page and read each violation's detail.
The page says that most violations expire after 90 days, when they move to Expired Violations and no longer affect standing, and that more severe violations may stay active longer. It tells you to check the violation detail for its specific expiration date. Read your own dates there, because they are the ones that apply to you.
#How Do I Appeal a Violation?
Discord's How to Appeal Our Actions page says every user can appeal actions taken against their account. It gives this path in the Discord app:
- Go to User Settings, then My Account, then Standing.
- Select the violation you want to appeal.
- Press Let us know to begin submitting a review of your violation and account.
The Warning System page adds that every violation notice includes a link to a webform where you can give feedback or ask Discord to review a violation and the penalty applied. The appeal page says users in the EU may also choose an alternative resolution option when applicable.
Write your review request in plain words. Say which violation you are appealing and why you think Discord made a mistake. Keep it to the facts, and do not include your password or any login code. Discord's pages do not ask for either.
#What Happens After I Appeal?
Discord's appeal page describes three outcomes.
- If reviewers find the violation was issued in error, Discord says it will remove it and restore your account standing, and any actions that resulted from it will be removed. If other active violations remain, you may still not regain full access.
- If the appeal is denied, Discord says it will send a message, and the violation remains on your account until it expires, if applicable.
- In some cases Discord says it cannot review an appeal because of the nature of the violation or incomplete information provided.
The Warning System page says it may take time to respond to every request, and that Discord prioritises users who believe they were permanently suspended in error. Neither page gives a number of days. If your violation is a permanent suspension, our guide to a disabled Discord account covers that situation.
#What About Warnings and Server Violations?
The Warning System page separates violations from warnings. It says a warning may be sent if you were in a server that broke the rules or engaged with rule-breaking content without doing anything yourself, and that warnings do not affect account standing. A violation does affect it.
For servers, the page says the owner receives a violation when a server contains a lot of content that breaks the rules, and that only the server owner can request a review of server violations. It also says that when a server is engaged in serious violations, its members may also receive a violation that affects their own account standing.
#Read the Rule You Were Told You Broke
The Warning System page says the violation card names the specific policy you violated and links to a policy explanation in the Community Guidelines. Read that part first. Discord's Community Guidelines page we read showed an effective date of 29 September 2025 and a last updated date of 29 August 2025, so check the live page, because rules can change. If the card and the guidelines show you broke a rule, say so honestly in your review request. If you believe Discord misread the content, explain the context.
#Do Not Open a New Account to Get Round It
Discord's pages we read describe no route that involves making a second account. A new account does not remove the violations on the old one, and it leaves you with a new account to protect and an old one still open to appeal. Appeal the violation instead, using the steps above.
#Messages That Only Look Like Discord
Discord's Discord Official Messages page says official messages alert you to account issues, including violation warnings, and notes that Discord will never ask you for your password or account token. It lists signs of a real message: the OFFICIAL badge in the member list, special text at the start of the DM, the OFFICIAL badge inside the DM, and a banner blocking chat input because you cannot reply.
A message that claims to be Discord, asks you to reply, or sends you to a link to enter your login is not what the page describes. If you were tricked into entering your details, our guide to a hacked Discord account and Nitro scams shows what to do.
#What the Pages Do Not Say
The pages we read do not say how long an appeal takes, they do not promise it will succeed and they do not list the exact action each rule breach receives. The Warning System page says there is no simple formula from the number of violations to specific penalties. We do not claim to know what will happen to your account.
#When It Is Safer to Get Expert Help
Some people sort this out alone, and the official steps stay first. The risks are real, though. Discord says an At Risk standing means any further violation may lead to a permanent suspension. Its pages say you cannot appeal the overall standing, only violations, and that some appeals cannot be reviewed because of incomplete information. Anyone who offers to clear your standing for a payment or asks for your password is not following Discord's route. Our guide to spotting fake recovery services lists the signs.
If you are unsure about any step, or the account matters for your income or business, handing the case to an experienced team such as AwareXone is the safer choice. We can help you read each violation, prepare a clear and honest review request and keep you away from lookalike messages. See our social media recovery help page, and use the Apply for Case Review button at the end of this guide.
#When a Case Review Makes Sense
If your standing is At Risk, a violation looks wrong or you cannot tell which message is real, a review can help you decide what to do first. SocialSafe by AwareXone is a Malaysia-based service, independent of Discord, that helps you use the official routes. We never ask for your password or login codes, and we cannot change Discord's decisions. See how we work on our trust page.
