YouTube Phone Verification: No Code, Features Locked
YouTube features locked or no phone code arriving? See what each level unlocks, what the error messages mean and what the pages say to try.
Phone verification unlocks intermediate features, and advanced ones need channel history or ID or video verification as well. If the code does not arrive, YouTube says to wait a few minutes, try the voice call option and check that your carrier supports Google messages. Never share a code with anyone who offers help.
Summary- YouTube's pages say phone verification unlocks intermediate features: videos over 15 minutes, custom thumbnails and live streaming on a computer.
- Advanced features need phone verification first, then enough channel history, or ID or video verification, which is not available to all creators.
- Only the primary owner can verify, so the not available error can mean a Brand Account or a supervised account.
- For a missing code, YouTube lists a delayed text, a carrier without Google message support, or a number already used for two channels.
- A wrong step, such as repeating failed ID attempts or sharing a code, can set you back, so know what you are doing before you start.

You try to upload a long video, add a custom thumbnail or go live, and YouTube says the feature is not available. You are asked to verify your phone number, and the code never arrives. Or you see a message about advanced features that does not match your situation.
This guide follows YouTube's own help pages. It sets out what each access level unlocks, how phone, ID and video verification fit together, what the error messages mean, and what the pages say to try when a code does not arrive. We only describe the official routes, and we cannot promise that a feature will unlock. A wrong step, such as repeating failed ID attempts or sharing a code with a stranger, can set you back, so know what you are doing before you start.

#What Do the Three Feature Levels Unlock?
YouTube's Learn about feature access for YouTube Creators page says that to get access to Studio tools and features, you can choose how to verify your identity, and that doing so helps reduce abuse and spam. It describes three levels.
| Level | How you get it, as YouTube describes it | Examples listed on the pages |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | Creating a channel gets you these features immediately, as long as you have no active Community Guidelines strikes | Upload videos and Shorts, create a playlist, posts, with limited daily limits |
| Intermediate | Verify your phone number | Videos longer than 15 minutes, live streaming on a computer, custom thumbnails, higher daily limits |
| Advanced | Phone verification first, then sufficient channel history, or verification of identity with a valid ID or video | Pinned comments, higher daily upload limits, embed live streams, Content ID appeal, clickable links in descriptions, chapters |
YouTube's Verify your YouTube account page lists what you can do once your account is verified: upload videos longer than 15 minutes, add custom thumbnails, live stream and appeal copyright claims. It says that to access advanced features, you must first complete phone verification, and then you can choose to build up sufficient channel history or verify with ID or video.
#How to Verify Your Phone Number
The Get access to intermediate and advanced features page gives the steps on a computer. Sign in to YouTube Studio, click Settings, then Channel, then Feature eligibility, then Intermediate features, and choose Verify phone number. You are asked to enter a phone number, and YouTube sends a verification code by text or voice call to that number.
The page also says that only primary channel owners can verify their identity to get access to additional features, and that some features may have separate eligibility requirements. You can see which features you have by opening Feature eligibility in YouTube Studio, where you will see Enabled next to the features you can use.
Keep the code to yourself. YouTube asks for it only inside the verification screen. We never ask for it, and no one offering help with your channel should.
#If the Verification Code Does Not Arrive
The Verify your YouTube account page says you should get the code immediately, and that if you have not, you can request a new code. It lists common problems:
- Text message delivery can be delayed. The page says delays can happen in densely populated areas, or if your carrier's infrastructure is not well maintained, and the other page adds a weak signal. If you have waited more than a few minutes, it says to try the voice call option.
- Some carriers do not support text messages or voice calls from Google. The page says most mobile carriers support text messages from Google, and that you can try either the text message or voice call option. It also says that if you do not receive a new code, your carrier may not support Google messages.
- The page says a phone number is linked to no more than 2 channels per year. If the number has reached that limit, you may see the message that this phone number has already created the maximum number of accounts, and the page says you will have to use a different number.
The page notes that not all carriers support text messages and voice calls from Google, and that some countries or regions do not either. The pages say that if a number has reached its limit you must verify a different phone number, and that if your carrier does not support Google messages you can try a number from a different carrier.
#What the Error Messages Mean
The Get access to intermediate and advanced features page lists common error messages and their meaning:
- Advanced YouTube features aren’t available for this account: you are signed in to an account where you are not the primary owner. The page says this can happen if you are signed in to an account supervised by a parent, or to a Brand Account.
- Check your browser: your browser is not compatible. The page says to update your device to the latest operating system and browser version.
- ID verification doesn’t work with this phone’s camera: your camera is not compatible. The page says to sign in with a phone that has a full HD rear-facing camera to submit your ID.
- Another application might be using your camera: another app is using your camera, so close your open apps and try again.
The first message can look alarming. It does not mean your channel is blocked. It means the account you are signed in to is not the primary owner of the channel. For a Brand Account, the page says only the primary owner of the channel is eligible to verify. If you manage a Brand Account, see our guide on YouTube Brand Account recovery.
#Advanced Features: Channel History, ID or Video
After phone verification, the page says you can build sufficient channel history or complete verification using ID or video. It says ID and video verification is not available to all creators. It describes channel history as a record of your channel activity, such as video uploads, live streams and audience engagement, and personal data related to your Google Account, such as when and how it was created, how often it is used and your method of connecting to Google services. It says active channels that follow the Community Guidelines can usually rebuild sufficient channel history within 2 months.
For ID verification, the page says you choose Use your ID under Advanced features, click Get email, and follow the prompts on your phone, and that the birthdate on your ID must match the birthdate on your Google Account. It says review usually takes 24 hours. For video verification, you perform an action such as following a dot or turning your head, and review usually takes 24 hours too. You get an email when it is approved.
If your first attempt was rejected, the page says you will be notified by email and recommends reviewing the tips in that email. If the second try is unsuccessful, it says you need to wait 30 days before trying either method again, and that you can also wait and build channel history instead. For video verification, it says you can appeal if you think the second attempt should have been approved. Do not repeat attempts quickly, because the wait applies to both methods.
#Why Features Can Be Delayed or Restricted
The page says not complying with the Community Guidelines delays feature eligibility, and that creators with advanced access can lose it by not complying and not maintaining a positive channel history. Its list of examples, which it says is not complete, includes a Community Guidelines strike, repeated posting of the same content, spam or scams, impersonating others and copyright strikes. If your access is restricted, it says you will get an email, and you can restore access by improving your channel history or by verifying identity using a valid ID or video.
If you are also trying to go live, YouTube's Get started with live streaming page says you need no live streaming restrictions in the past 90 days and you need to verify your channel, and that you must be at least 16 years old to live stream. See our guide on a live streaming restriction. If your issue is an age check, that is a different process, covered in our guide on age estimation and verifying your age.
#What the Pages Do Not Say
The pages we read do not say why a particular code fails for a particular carrier, and they do not give a fixed time after which a code should arrive beyond saying you should get it immediately and to wait a few minutes before using voice. They do not say how channel history is scored, or how long an appeal takes. They do not promise that a feature will unlock. We do not know your outcome, and we will not guess.
#When It Is Safer to Get Expert Help
Some people sort this out alone, and the official steps stay first. The risks are plain. Sharing a verification code gives someone control of your verification, so never do it. Submitting a poor ID photo twice can start a 30 day wait. Signing in with the wrong account can look like a block when it is not. And a person who offers to unlock features or lift a restriction for a payment or your login is a risk to expect.
If the channel matters to your income or your business, or your features were restricted after a strike or a hack, handing the case to an experienced team such as AwareXone is the safer choice. We can help you work out which route applies and avoid mistakes that cost time. See our YouTube help page, and use the Apply for Case Review button at the end of this guide.
#When a Case Review Makes Sense
If a feature stays locked after you have followed the steps, or you cannot tell which account owns the channel, a review can help you decide what to try first. SocialSafe by AwareXone is a Malaysia-based service, independent of YouTube, that helps you use the official routes. We never ask for your password or login codes, and we cannot unlock a feature for you. See how we work on our trust page.
