Short answer

YouTube can terminate a channel it links to another terminated channel, because its rules say a terminated user cannot use, own or create other channels. Do not open a new channel while terminated. Appeal in YouTube Studio through Begin Review and Start Appeal, explaining why the channels are not connected. You have one year and two appeals.

Summary
  • YouTube says that if your channel is terminated, you are prohibited from using, possessing or creating any other YouTube channels.
  • The rule covers existing channels, new or acquired ones, and channels where you are repeatedly or prominently featured, so links between them matter.
  • The official route is an appeal in YouTube Studio through Begin Review and Start Appeal, or the appeal form if that does not work.
  • YouTube says creators have up to one year from termination to appeal and can submit only two appeals in that period.
  • Do not create a new channel while terminated, as YouTube's rules prohibit creating any other channels.

You sign in and YouTube Studio shows a termination notice. The reason is not a video you posted. YouTube says your channel is linked to another channel that was already terminated, a channel you may never have heard of, or one that belongs to a friend, a former manager or someone you once worked with.

The short answer: YouTube does not allow you to have or make any channel while you are terminated, so do not start a new one. The official way forward is to appeal the termination through YouTube Studio, or the appeal form, and explain clearly why your channel should not be linked to the other one.

This guide explains what YouTube's rule says, why channels get linked, how to appeal, what to put in the appeal, the limits on appeals, and why public posts to YouTube's support account are not a sure route.

YouTube's help page on channel or account terminations says: "If your YouTube channel is terminated, you are prohibited from using, possessing, or creating any other YouTube channels." It adds that you are also prohibited from letting others whose channels were terminated use your channel to get around their termination.

The same page says this applies to all of your existing channels, any new channels you create or acquire, and any channels in which you are repeatedly or prominently featured. So if YouTube believes your channel is connected to a terminated channel, it can treat your channel as covered by that termination.

YouTube does not publish exactly how it decides two channels are linked. You may not know which channel it means, so your appeal should explain your situation plainly rather than guess at YouTube's methods.

#How Is This Different From a Strike Termination?

A linked-channel termination is not the same as reaching the strike limit. YouTube's page on Community Guidelines strike basics says three strikes in the same 90-day period may result in your channel being permanently removed, and that a single case of severe abuse can lead to termination without warning. A link termination can arrive with no strikes on your own channel at all. Check the reason YouTube gives in Studio, because it shapes what you say in your appeal.

#Can I Make a New Channel While Terminated?

No. YouTube's termination policy says plainly that a terminated user is prohibited from creating any other YouTube channels. That also covers channels you acquire and channels where you are prominently featured.

This includes asking a friend to upload your videos on their channel or featuring yourself prominently on someone else's. YouTube's rule covers channels you are repeatedly or prominently featured in, so this can put their channel at risk.

#How Do I Appeal a Termination for a Linked Channel?

YouTube's termination help page gives these steps on a computer:

  1. Open YouTube Studio. You may need to sign in again.
  2. Below the termination info, click Begin Review. You may need to complete a verification step.
  3. Review the reason for termination, then click Next.
  4. Select Start Appeal, then click Next.
  5. Give your contact email address and explain your reason for appeal.
  6. Click Submit.

If you cannot submit an appeal through these steps, the same page says you can appeal using its appeal form. YouTube says you will be notified by email about the outcome, and you can check your appeal in YouTube Studio, including its anticipated review time.

If your termination came from copyright strikes rather than a link, YouTube's page says the route is different, through a counter notification. For a single strike or video removal, YouTube's page on appealing a Community Guidelines strike or video removal sets out that process.

#What Should I Put in My Appeal?

You have limited space and limited attempts, so make the appeal clear and specific. Write it in your own words and keep to facts you can stand behind.

  • Say plainly that you believe your channel was linked to another terminated channel in error.
  • Explain who runs your channel and that you do not own, run or share it with the terminated channel, if that is true.
  • If you know of a past connection, such as a shared manager, a former editor or a shared device or network, explain it honestly and say whether it has ended.
  • Mention when your channel was created and what it publishes, so the reviewer can see it stands on its own.
  • Keep a copy of what you submit and the date you sent it.

If someone you once gave access to your channel later had their own channel terminated, remove their access before you appeal. Our guide on YouTube manager access explains how channel permissions work.

#How Long Do I Have, and What Is the Appeal Limit?

YouTube's termination page says: "Creators have up to 1 year from the date their channel was terminated to submit an appeal. Creators can only submit two appeals within the 1 year period." It also says there is a limit on the number of times you can appeal a single channel termination.

QuestionWhat YouTube says
Where do I appeal?YouTube Studio, through Begin Review and Start Appeal, or the appeal form
How long do I have?Up to one year from the date the channel was terminated
What is the appeal limit? Two within the one-year period, with a limit per termination
How will I hear back?By email about the outcome of your appeal
Can I open a new channel meanwhile? No, terminated users are prohibited from creating other channels

Because you only get two appeals, do not rush the first one. Take time to write it clearly. If you also want to keep your content, YouTube's page says you can still download your Google data after a termination.

#Does Posting to TeamYouTube on X Help?

Some creators post publicly about their termination and tag YouTube's support account on X. There is one public, reported case we could find. A SlashGear report says that in November 2025 a gaming creator posted on X that their channel had been terminated over an alleged link to another channel, and that the same day a TeamYouTube post said the channel had been restored after looking into it.

Treat this as one user-reported case, not a route you can count on. It is not part of YouTube's published appeal process, and a public post does not replace the appeal in YouTube Studio. If you post publicly, never share personal details, and file your official appeal anyway.

#Watch for People Offering to Restore Your Channel

A terminated channel can bring messages from people saying they work with YouTube or can reverse the termination. YouTube's help pages only set out the Studio appeal and the form. Do not share your Google password or codes, and do not pay anyone who says they can restore the channel. Our guide on spotting fake recovery services explains the warning signs.

#When a Case Review Makes Sense

If you do not know which channel YouTube linked you to, or you shared managers or editors with other creators, a review can help you organise the facts before you use one of your two appeals. SocialSafe by AwareXone is a Malaysia-based service, independent of YouTube, that helps you use YouTube's official appeal route. We never ask for your password or login codes and we cannot change YouTube's decisions. See our YouTube help, how we work on our trust page, and our guide to appealing a terminated YouTube channel.
