Restore a Hidden or Deleted YouTube Channel: What Is Possible
Your YouTube channel looks gone? Learn how hidden and deleted channels differ, how to turn a hidden one back on and when a Brand Account can be restored.
First check whether the channel was hidden or deleted. A hidden channel can be restored by signing in and filling in the create a channel form, without choosing the business or other name option. A permanently deleted channel is much harder to recover. If it was a Brand Account, check Deleted accounts in your Google Account's Brand Accounts section.

When a YouTube channel seems to have disappeared, the first question is what actually happened to it. YouTube lets owners either hide a channel temporarily or delete it permanently, and the two have very different outcomes. A hidden channel can be turned back on. A permanently deleted channel usually cannot. Brand Accounts add another layer. This guide explains how to tell which situation you are in and what YouTube's help pages say you can do.

#Was my channel hidden, deleted or removed by YouTube?
| What you see | Likely situation | Where to start |
|---|---|---|
| Your YouTube channel has content but has been disabled | The channel is hidden | Re-enable the hidden channel |
| The channel is gone after you chose to delete your content | Permanently deleted by the owner | Usually not recoverable; check Brand Accounts |
| The Google Account that owned the channel was deleted | The channel was deleted with it | Check whether the Google Account can be recovered |
| A notice that your channel was terminated | Removed by YouTube for a policy reason | See our termination appeal guide |
| You cannot sign in, or settings changed without you | Possible compromise | See our hacked channel guide |
#What happens when a channel is hidden?
YouTube says hiding a channel makes the channel name, videos, likes, subscriptions and subscribers private, and that view counts may be inaccurate while it is hidden. It can take up to a week for counts to update after you re-enable it (YouTube Help).
If your channel is hidden, YouTube says you may see the message that your channel has content but has been disabled on your Content page. You can still watch, like and subscribe, and that activity is private (YouTube Help).
#How do I turn a hidden channel back on?
YouTube gives these steps (YouTube Help):
- Sign in to YouTube.
- Go to create a channel and fill out the form. YouTube says this restores your channel.
- Do not click the option to use a business or other name. YouTube says that creates a new channel instead of restoring the hidden one.
- Once the channel is public again, make your videos and playlists viewable from the Videos page.
For a Brand Account, YouTube says to sign in, tap your profile picture, go to Settings, then Account, then Add or manage your channel(s), select the hidden channel, and click OK when asked to create a channel.
#What happens when a channel is permanently deleted?
YouTube says closing your channel permanently deletes your content, including videos, comments, messages, playlists and history. It warns that if you permanently delete your channel, it may have a harder time recovering your account. It also says that if you delete the primary owner account linked to your channel, the channel is deleted too (YouTube Help).
#Can I restore a deleted Brand Account?
If the channel was attached to a Brand Account, there is one more place to check. YouTube says that if you recently deleted a Brand Account, you may be able to recover it from the Brand Accounts section of your Google Account, under Deleted accounts, by choosing Restore this Brand Account (YouTube Help).
YouTube says you must have been an owner of the Brand Account for 7 days before you can delete or restore accounts, and that you will see an error if you have been an owner for less time. After restoring, check the channel carefully to see what has returned. Our guide on YouTube Brand Account recovery covers owner and manager access.
#How do I avoid losing a channel by accident?
- If you only want a break, choose I want to hide my channel, not the permanent deletion option.
- Download a copy of your videos and data before making any major change.
- Do not delete the Google Account that is the primary owner of the channel.
- For Brand Accounts, keep at least one other trusted owner so access does not depend on one person.
#How do I hide a channel safely instead of deleting it?
If you only want to take a break, YouTube gives a separate option to hide your channel. In YouTube Studio, go to Settings, then Channel, then Advanced Settings, and at the bottom select Remove YouTube Content. YouTube says this link takes you to a page where you can delete or hide your channel, and you may be asked to sign in again. Choose I want to hide my channel, tick the boxes to confirm what will be hidden and select Hide my channel (YouTube Help). Read each option carefully, because the permanent deletion choice is on the same page.
#Common mistakes
- Choosing the business or other name option when restoring a hidden channel, which creates a new empty channel.
- Assuming a deleted Google Account leaves the channel intact.
- Waiting too long to check Deleted accounts for a Brand Account.
- Paying anyone who claims they can restore a permanently deleted channel.
#Watch out for recovery scams
YouTube's routes are its own help pages, YouTube Studio and your Google Account settings. Strangers offering to bring back a deleted channel, or asking for your Google password or codes, are not part of that process. Our guide on spotting fake recovery services lists the warning signs.
#What are the realistic limits?
YouTube and Google control channel and account recovery. Hidden channels can usually be turned back on by the owner. Permanently deleted channels are a different matter, and YouTube warns that deletion can make account recovery harder. Brand Account restoration depends on the account still appearing under Deleted accounts and on your ownership.
