Short answer

WhatsApp logs out a linked device if your main phone has not been used for about 14 days, when you log out from the phone, or after app updates. Frequent logouts are usually harmless. Check Settings, Linked devices on your phone: if you see a device you do not recognise, log it out and turn on two-step verification.

Summary
  • WhatsApp says linked devices are logged out if your phone is inactive for 14 days.
  • Updates, reinstalling or changing phones also log devices out.
  • Unknown devices in Linked devices can mean someone is spying.
  • You can log out any device from your phone.
  • Two-step verification protects your number.

Linked devices that keep dropping are mostly a nuisance. Devices you never linked are a serious problem. Here is how to tell the difference.

#Why do linked devices log out?

  • Your main phone has not been used for 14 days.
  • You logged out from the phone.
  • You reinstalled WhatsApp or moved to a new phone.
  • Browser data was cleared on the computer.

#How do I check for spying?

  1. On your phone, open Settings, Linked devices.
  2. Review every device and its last active time.
  3. Tap any device you do not recognise and log out.
  4. Turn on two-step verification.
  5. If someone had your phone, change your phone lock too.

#What if a device keeps coming back?

Someone may be re-linking it with access to your phone, or the account may be compromised. See our guide on ghost pairing.

#When should I ask an expert before I act?

Ask for help before you appeal if the account matters to your income, your business or your memories, if you have already had one appeal rejected, or if you cannot tell whether the problem is a bug, a restriction or a hack. That is where most avoidable losses happen.
