"Not Allowed to Use WhatsApp"? What a Ban Means

WhatsApp banned your number in Malaysia? What "This account can't use WhatsApp" means, how Request review works, when a ban is final, and scams to avoid.

11 min read
Short answer

It means WhatsApp has banned the number for a suspected Terms of Service breach, and reinstalling will not lift it. Tap Request review on the ban screen once in the official app. If there is no Request review option, WhatsApp says the ban is final. If you were hacked, recover the number with the SMS code first.

Summary
  • "This account can't use WhatsApp" means WhatsApp has banned the number for a suspected Terms of Service breach, and reinstalling the app will not lift it.
  • Open the official app and tap Request review on the ban screen once. WhatsApp reviews one phone number per appeal and tells you its decision in the app.
  • If the ban screen shows no Request review option, WhatsApp says the ban is final and cannot be appealed.
  • If someone took over your number first, recover it with the SMS code before anything else, and do not report your own account while recovering it.
  • Only WhatsApp can unban a number. Ignore anyone selling an unban, and never share your verification code or two-step verification PIN.
  • WhatsApp makes the decision and some numbers do not come back. If WhatsApp's official channels do not resolve it, you may lodge a complaint with MCMC, which refers it to Meta.

You open WhatsApp and, instead of your chats, the screen says your account cannot use the app. The family group, the customer orders and the school chat have all gone quiet at once. Many people search for the older wording, "This account is not allowed to use WhatsApp" or "This account can no longer use WhatsApp". The current notice says "This account can't use WhatsApp".

This is a ban. WhatsApp has decided the number broke its Terms of Service, and the only way back is the review button on that screen, if it is there. A new SIM, a reinstall or a paid "unban" service will not change the decision.

This guide covers what each notice means, how to request a review, bans after a hack, WhatsApp Business, and where Malaysian agencies fit in.

#What Does "This Account Can't Use WhatsApp" Mean?

It means WhatsApp has banned the phone number because it believes the account's activity broke its Terms of Service, for example spam, scams or putting other people's safety at risk. WhatsApp's help page on account bans says the way to challenge it is to tap "Request review" in the app, that it reviews one phone number per appeal, and that if you do not see the option to request a review, the ban is final and cannot be appealed. The same page says only WhatsApp can ban or unban an account. If the number was taken over before the ban, recover it with the SMS code first, then request the review. Nobody outside WhatsApp, including AwareXone, can lift a ban.

#Which WhatsApp Notice Are You Looking At?

A ban, a temporary ban, a restriction and a takeover each need a different first step. The wording can change between app versions and languages, so match the meaning, not every word. Timers and restrictions have their own guide to temporary WhatsApp bans; this article deals with the full ban.

#How to Request a Review of a Banned WhatsApp Number

The review starts from the ban screen itself. There is no email address, form or paid channel that replaces it. At the time of writing, the steps WhatsApp describes look like this:

  1. Use the official WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business app, updated from Google Play or the App Store.
  2. Screenshot the ban screen, including the phone number and the date.
  3. Tap "Request review". If the app asks you to confirm, confirm once.
  4. If the app lets you give a reason, pick the one that is true. Do not say the account was stolen unless it really was.
  5. Close the app and wait. WhatsApp says it sends a notification in WhatsApp once it has reviewed the account and made a decision.
  6. Check the status by opening WhatsApp again, not by submitting again.

WhatsApp is plain about shortcuts. Its ban page says that contacting WhatsApp outside the review process, or through another person's account, will not speed up the review or change the decision.

#No "Request Review" Button: Is the Ban Permanent?

Yes, as far as WhatsApp is concerned. Its help page says that if you do not see the option to request a review, the ban is final and cannot be appealed. The Business app page says the same for business numbers.

Two steps still help. Tell the people who matter, by SMS, a call or another app, that your WhatsApp is gone, so nobody trusts a stranger claiming to be you. And if the ban followed a takeover, keep a dated note and any evidence, because it matters if you later complain to MCMC.

#Banned After a Hack: Recover the Number First

A hijacked number can be banned for what the hijacker did with it. MCMC's 25 September 2026 media statement says account compromise and account blocking are two distinct matters, and that accounts taken over by irresponsible parties may be misused for scams, spam or activity that breaks WhatsApp's terms, which can then get them blocked by the platform. MCMC says it has referred the complaints it received to Meta.

So the order matters. If WhatsApp asks you to register or verify again, you are dealing with a takeover first. WhatsApp's page on recovering a compromised account sets out the route:

  1. Put the SIM card for that number in your phone. WhatsApp says an account cannot be recovered without a SIM card with the same phone number.
  2. In WhatsApp, tap "Log back in" and then "Continue", enter your full international number if prompted, and enter the 6-digit code sent by SMS or phone call.
  3. Once you enter that code, WhatsApp says every device logged into your account is signed out, including the other person's.
  4. If WhatsApp asks for a two-step verification PIN you never set, the other person probably set it. WhatsApp says to wait 7 days and try again.
  5. Once you are back in, turn on two-step verification and review your linked devices.
  6. If the account is then banned, request a review and, if the app lets you give a reason, say the account was taken over.

One warning on that same WhatsApp page is easy to miss: if you report the compromised account you are trying to recover, WhatsApp might ban it, and you could lose access to the account or its data. Try to recover the account before you report it. Our guide to a WhatsApp takeover through a shared verification code covers the takeover itself in more detail.

#WhatsApp Business Numbers and Meta Verified

Business owners see a slightly different notice. WhatsApp's page on bans in the WhatsApp Business app gives the wording as "This phone number can't use WhatsApp: [phone number]. You can request a review of this number. Most reviews are completed within 24 hours." The same page adds:

  • A banned account automatically loses its Meta Verified subscription.
  • If the account broke the Meta Verified for Business Terms of Service, the WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy or the Meta Commerce Policy, for example by sending spam or trying to sell items those policies prohibit, WhatsApp says the subscription is cancelled and a refund is unavailable.
  • Numbers on the WhatsApp Business Platform (the API used through software providers) follow a separate appeal process described in Meta's developer documentation, not the in-app button.

While the review runs, put a short notice on your website or social pages with another way to order. Do not set up a new number to get around the ban.

#What Happens to Your Chats and Backups While You Are Banned?

You cannot reach them through WhatsApp. The ban page says you cannot access your chat history or backups while the account is banned, and that you can only access a backup after the phone number tied to it is unbanned.

Do not delete the app, wipe the phone or overwrite a cloud backup while a review is pending. If the ban is lifted, that backup may be the only copy of your chats.

#Before You Tap Request Review: A Short Checklist

The in-app review leaves little or no room to explain, so this list is for your own records and for MCMC or the police if needed.

  • A screenshot of the ban screen, with the phone number and date visible.
  • Confirmation that the SIM for that number is in your phone and still active with your telco.
  • A note of any unofficial WhatsApp app, bulk sender or automation tool you used, and proof you have removed it.
  • If there was a takeover: when you lost access, any SMS codes you did not request, and messages from friends who received strange requests from your number.
  • For a business number: invoices, your website or other pages that list the number, and any Meta Verified receipts, in case you need to show the number is yours.
  • A dated note of when you tapped "Request review", so you do not resubmit.

#Mistakes That Make a WhatsApp Ban Harder to Undo

  • Tapping "Request review" repeatedly or on several phones. Once is enough, and WhatsApp reviews one number per appeal.
  • Installing an unofficial WhatsApp app to get back in. WhatsApp's page on temporary bans describes unofficial apps as fake WhatsApp apps built by third parties that break its Terms of Service, and says continuing to use them can lead to a permanent ban.
  • Carrying on with bulk broadcasts or automation. WhatsApp's page on restricted accounts says anyone engaging in spam, automated or bulk messaging could have their account banned.
  • Reporting your own hijacked account before recovering it.
  • Paying anyone who says they can "unban" or "buka semula" a number, or handing over your code, PIN or MyKad to them.

These offers turn up as adverts or comments in BM, English or Chinese, sometimes from pages posing as "Meta Support". Our breakdown of fake Meta support pages shows what they look like.

#Malaysia: When to Call 997, Cyber999 or MCMC

Most bans stay between you and WhatsApp. These channels help when more has happened.

  • Money lost: if someone used your hijacked WhatsApp to trick contacts into transferring money, or you paid a fake unban service, the National Scam Response Centre says to contact your bank's 24-hour hotline or NSRC on 997 immediately. The 997 line runs from 8.00am to 8.00pm every day, including public holidays. Then make a police report.
  • A security incident: CyberSecurity Malaysia's Cyber999 response centre is the national point of contact for reporting computer security incidents, by online form, email, phone or its mobile app.
  • WhatsApp did not resolve it: MCMC's statement says that if the issue remains unresolved through WhatsApp's official channels, you may lodge a complaint with MCMC for further action and referral to Meta. MCMC's complaints page points to its portal at aduan.mcmc.gov.my.
  • SIM problems: if your phone lost service around the time of the takeover, call your telco from another phone and ask whether a replacement SIM was issued.

An MCMC complaint is a referral, not an override. File it with your screenshots and a short timeline after using the review button; WhatsApp still decides.

#When Expert Recovery Help Makes Sense

Most people can handle a WhatsApp ban alone; there is only one button to press. A second opinion helps when a takeover and a ban are tangled together, or a business number has gone dark. SocialSafe by AwareXone, AwareXone's recovery service, looks at the screens and the timeline and tells you honestly which official route is still open, even when the answer is none. The recovery hub explains how a case review works for WhatsApp and other platforms, and our Trust Center sets out what we never ask for: no password, no verification code, no PIN. For other platforms, our overview of social media account recovery in Malaysia is a good starting point.

#Frequently Asked Questions

Why was my WhatsApp banned for no reason?
WhatsApp says it bans accounts when it believes the activity breaks its Terms of Service, such as spam, scams or putting other people at risk. Common hidden causes are an unofficial WhatsApp app, bulk messaging, or someone else using your number after a takeover.
How long does a WhatsApp ban review take?
The WhatsApp Business ban notice says most reviews are completed within 24 hours. WhatsApp's page for personal accounts gives no fixed time and says you will get a notification in WhatsApp once a decision is made. Contacting WhatsApp another way does not speed it up.
Can I use the same number on a new phone to get around the ban?
No. WhatsApp's ban notices and review process are tied to the phone number, not the handset, so moving the SIM to another phone does not change the decision. Unofficial apps make it worse, because WhatsApp treats them as a breach of its Terms of Service.
Can a company in Malaysia unban my WhatsApp if I pay?
No. WhatsApp says third party services cannot remove a ban and only WhatsApp can unban an account, and MCMC warns against recovery offers that ask for money, personal information or codes. A legitimate helper can only guide you through WhatsApp's own review.
My WhatsApp is banned. Can I still get my chats back?
Only if the ban is lifted. WhatsApp says you cannot reach chats or backups while the number is banned, and a backup becomes available again only after that number is unbanned. Keep the phone and the backup untouched until the review ends.
