Short answer

Report the account from inside Snapchat: open Chat, press and hold the account name, tap Manage Friendship, then Report. If that is not possible, use Snapchat Support on the web and choose the option for someone pretending to be you. Save the username and screenshots first. Snapchat reviews the report and decides what action to take.

Summary
  • Snapchat's Community Guidelines prohibit pretending to be someone you are not, including friends, celebrities and brands.
  • In the app, open Chat, press and hold the account name, tap Manage Friendship, then Report.
  • If you cannot report in the app, for example because you are blocked, use Snapchat Support on the web.
  • Snapchat says it does not tell the reported person who made the report.
  • Snapchat employees will never contact you through Snaps or Chat to help, so treat such messages as a warning sign.

A Snapchat account that uses your name, photos or brand to pretend to be you breaks Snapchat's rules on impersonation. You can report it from inside the app, or through Snapchat Support on the web if the app route is not available. Snapchat reviews the report and decides what to do. This guide covers what counts as impersonation, the exact reporting steps, what to save first and the realistic limits.

#What does Snapchat count as impersonation?

Snap's Community Guidelines prohibit pretending to be someone or something you are not, or trying to deceive people about who you are. Snap says this includes impersonating friends, acquaintances, celebrities, brands and other organisations (Snap).

Snap also says fan, satire and commentary accounts are generally permitted, but they must be transparent and say so explicitly, including in the display name. The same guidelines prohibit imitating Snapchat or Snap branding to deceive people.

#What should I save before I report?

  • The exact username of the fake account, written down character by character
  • Screenshots of its profile, display name and any Stories that copy you, with the date visible
  • Screenshots of messages it sent to you or to friends who forwarded them
  • Your own genuine username, so the difference is easy to see
  • A short note of when you first noticed it and who it contacted

Snapchat content can disappear quickly, so capture it before you report. Our guide on collecting evidence before reporting explains how to keep a clean record.

#How do I report a Snapchat account impersonating me in the app?

Snapchat says the fastest way to report accounts or content to its safety team is in the app. To report an account, Snapchat Support gives these steps (Snapchat Support):

  1. Open the Chat screen.
  2. Press and hold the Snapchatter's name.
  3. Tap Manage Friendship.
  4. Tap Report, then follow the in-app prompts and choose the reason that matches impersonation.

To report a specific Snap or Story that copies you, press and hold it and tap Report Snap.

#What if I cannot report it in the app?

If the account has blocked you, you will not be able to report it in the app. Snapchat says you can still report the account on its support site at help.snapchat.com (Snapchat Support). The support site also lists an option for someone pretending to be you. Give the fake username and explain clearly what it copied.

#What happens after I report?

Snapchat says reported accounts and content are reviewed against its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. If it finds a violation, it takes action under its policies, which may include removing content or restricting the account. Snapchat also says that not all reported content breaks its rules, and content that does not will stay on Snapchat (Snapchat Support).

Snapchat does not publish a fixed timeline. Check the username again after some time rather than sending many duplicate reports at once.

#How do I protect my friends while the account is live?

  • Post a Story on your genuine account saying a fake exists and giving your real username.
  • Ask friends who were contacted to report the same account from their own app.
  • Tell friends you will never ask for money, gift cards or login codes in Chat.
  • Do not argue with the fake account. Block it once you have saved your evidence.

#What should I write in the report?

Reviewers see many reports, so a short, specific description helps. State plainly that the account is pretending to be you, give its exact username, and give your own genuine username so the reviewer can compare the two. List what was copied, such as your display name, profile photo, Bitmoji or Stories, and say who it has contacted and what it asked them for. Avoid insults or guesses about who is behind it. Stick to what you can show with screenshots.

If the account is copying a business, say which business it is copying and where the genuine business can be found, such as its website.

Keep a simple log of each report you file: the date, the route you used and what you said. If you need to report again later, you can then add new information instead of repeating yourself.

#Common mistakes

  • Reporting before saving the username, then being unable to find the account again.
  • Picking a general spam reason when the account is clearly pretending to be you.
  • Reporting a labelled fan account as impersonation, which may not breach the guidelines.
  • Creating a second account of your own to warn people, which can confuse friends further.

#Watch out for support scams

Snapchat says its employees will never contact you through Snaps or Chat to help you, and asks you to report any account that claims to be Snapchat support (Snapchat Support). Never share your password, one-time codes or backup codes with anyone who offers to remove an account. Our guide on spotting fake recovery services lists the common warning signs.

#What are the realistic limits?

Snapchat decides whether an account breaks its rules. Accounts that only share a common name, or transparent fan and parody accounts, may stay up. If a report is declined, clearer evidence of copying and reports from the people who were contacted can help. For a cross-platform overview, see our impersonation and fake account removal guide.

AwareXone helps people and businesses prepare impersonation reports through official platform channels. We are independent and not affiliated with Snap, the work is best-effort, and Snapchat makes the final decision. Read more about our impersonation removal support.
