Cover card with a hidden-eye and blocked sign, for telling Instagram restrict from block.
Short answer

If someone blocked you, their profile usually shows "User not found" or no posts, and you can't follow or message them. If they restricted you, you can still see their profile and posts, but your comments are visible only to you and your messages go to their requests. Instagram doesn't notify you of either.

Summary
  • Instagram doesn't notify you when you're blocked or restricted.
  • Blocked: profile may look empty or not found.
  • Restricted: your comments are visible only to you.
  • Neither affects your account standing.
  • Account restrictions by Instagram appear in Account Status.

#What common mistakes should I avoid?

  • Making fake accounts to check someone's profile.
  • Harassing the person through other platforms.

Ask for help before you appeal if the account matters to your income, your business or your memories, if you have already had one appeal rejected, or if you cannot tell whether the problem is a bug, a restriction or a hack. That is where most avoidable losses happen.
