Meta's Accounts Center is where your Facebook, Instagram and Meta accounts are linked so they can share settings and connected experiences, such as logging in across your accounts. Most people only ever see their own accounts there. Finding an account you do not recognise is worrying, because linked accounts can share important settings with yours. This guide explains what Accounts Center does, how to remove an account and what to check afterwards.

#What is Meta Accounts Center?
Meta describes Accounts Center as a place to manage connected experiences across your Facebook, Instagram and Meta accounts. It says you need at least two accounts to set one up, and that some apps are not available in Accounts Center everywhere (Meta Help Center).
Meta also notes that you can only add one Facebook account to an Accounts Center. If you want to add a different Facebook account, you need to remove the current one first.
#Why does an unknown account matter?
Meta lists the settings that can be managed in Accounts Center (Meta Help Center):
| Settings area | Examples Meta gives |
|---|---|
| Personal details | Contact information, birthday, identity confirmation, memorialisation preferences, deleting or deactivating your account |
| Password and security | Password, two-factor authentication, login alerts, login activity and where you are logged in |
| Your information and permissions | Contact uploads, search history, downloading or transferring your information |
| Ad preferences | Ad topics, advertisers you have seen and ad settings |
| Payments | Meta Pay settings |
Because these settings can be shared across the accounts in one Accounts Center, an account you do not control sitting alongside yours is something to deal with straight away.
#Is it definitely someone else's account?
Before you remove anything, check whether it is an account you have forgotten about. Common innocent explanations include:
- An old Instagram account you created years ago with the same email or phone number.
- A second account for a business or hobby that you or a family member set up on your phone.
- An account Meta suggested when you set up Accounts Center. Meta says it may suggest adding an account that is logged in on the same device.
If you are still unsure, take screenshots of the account's name and username before you change anything, so you have a record if you need to report it later.
#How do I remove an account from Accounts Center?
Meta gives these steps for phone, tablet or computer (Meta Help Center):
- Go to Accounts Center.
- Tap or click Accounts or Manage accounts.
- Tap or click Remove next to the account you want to remove.
- Follow the prompts to confirm.
Meta also notes that settings changed while accounts were together in one Accounts Center continue to apply after removal until you change them. They do not revert automatically, so review your settings once the unknown account is gone.
#What should I secure after removing it?
- Change your password to a strong one you do not use anywhere else.
- Turn on two-factor authentication in Password and security.
- Review login activity and where you are logged in, and log out of sessions you do not recognise.
- Check your email address and phone number in Personal details, and remove any you did not add.
- Review your ad and payment settings for anything that has changed.
- Secure the email account linked to your Meta accounts, because it can be used to reset your password.
Our guides on someone logging into your account and two-factor authentication go into each of these steps.
#What if I cannot remove the account?
If the Remove option does not appear, or the account comes back after you remove it, treat the situation as possible unauthorised access. Change your password from a device you trust, secure your email, and use Meta's account recovery and support routes, which Meta links from its Accounts Center help pages. If you no longer have access to your own account at all, follow Meta's hacked account process rather than trying to manage Accounts Center first.
#How do I keep a record before acting?
If the account turns out to be someone else's, a record helps if you later need to report it or explain what happened to a bank or employer. Note the date you noticed it, the account name and username shown, and which of your accounts it was linked to. Then check your email inbox for any Meta notices about new logins or changes to your contact details around that time, and keep those messages rather than deleting them.
#Common mistakes
- Removing the account before taking screenshots, leaving no record if you need to report it.
- Changing your password but leaving the unknown account linked.
- Forgetting that settings changed while linked do not revert after removal.
- Ignoring the email account, which can let someone back in.
#Watch out for fake support
Meta's own help pages and in-app settings are the official routes. Be wary of messages that claim to be from Meta and ask for your password or login codes to fix your Accounts Center, or that link to pages outside Meta. Our guide on spotting fake recovery services lists common warning signs.
#What are the realistic limits?
Meta controls Accounts Center and decides what is shown and how linked accounts behave. Removing an unknown account and securing your own is usually within your control. Where you have lost access, recovery depends on Meta's own processes. For newer protections Meta may require, see Meta passkeys.
AwareXone helps people and businesses review account security through official platform settings. We are independent and not affiliated with Meta, the work is best-effort, and Meta makes the final decision on account access. Read more about our account security support.
