Instagram Disabled for CSE by Mistake? How to Appeal
Instagram disabled your account for child sexual exploitation when you did nothing wrong? What the notice means, how to appeal, and what to avoid.
Reviewed by Md Shariar Shanaz Shuvon, Founder & CEO of AwareXone.
If Instagram disabled your account for "child sexual exploitation, abuse or nudity" and you did nothing wrong, appeal straight away from the disabled-account screen, complete any identity check, and keep evidence of the notice and your appeal. This category is treated as one of the most severe, so one flag can disable an account.
Summary- In 2025, the BBC and ABC reported many users wrongly disabled under child-safety rules. Some were reinstated after review.
- Meta says a single severe violation can lead to an account being disabled.
- Appeal through the in-app disabled screen. Meta describes a limited window to request a review.
- Check whether your account was hacked. Content posted by an intruder can trigger this category.
- Never pay "unban" agents. Nobody outside Meta can reverse this decision.

Wrongful cases have been widely reported, though, and some have been reversed. Don't pay anyone promising a reversal, and don't open a new account to get around the ban.
#Why would Instagram flag an innocent account for CSE?
Meta uses automated systems as well as human reviewers to detect child-safety violations, and treats this category as severe (Meta Transparency Center). Public reports describe innocent people caught by this, including parents and people whose accounts had been compromised. The ABC reported an Australian user wrongly accused under these rules (ABC). The BBC reported that Meta had changed related policies several times and had removed around 635,000 accounts in one child-safety action (BBC).
Possible triggers reported publicly include:
- family photos of children in swimwear or at bath time;
- comments or DMs sent by someone who had hacked the account;
- links to, or interactions with, accounts that were themselves removed;
- automated misreading of art, memes or news content.
We can't tell you which applied in your case. Meta doesn't normally say.
#How do I appeal a CSE disable on Instagram?
- Act quickly. Open Instagram and log in. If you see the disabled screen, choose the option to disagree or appeal. Meta's help centre describes a 180-day window to request a review, which may vary by region (Facebook Help).
- Complete identity verification if asked, such as a video selfie. Do it carefully in good light.
- Write a short, calm statement if there's a text box: you believe the decision is a mistake, you have never shared such content, and, if relevant, you believe the account may have been accessed by someone else.
- Don't upload images of children as "proof". Never send content you think might have triggered the flag.
- Save evidence. Take screenshots of the notice, the date and time, emails from Instagram's real domains and any reference number.
- Check your email account security. If the account was hacked, secure your email first so the intruder can't interfere.
"When a Child Sexual Exploitation label is wrong, the cases that progress are the ones that follow Meta's official appeal exactly, keep calm evidence of a mistaken match, and avoid creating lookalike accounts that look like ban evasion. Nobody outside Meta can reverse that label." - Md Shariar Shanaz Shuvon, Founder, AwareXone
#What if my account was hacked before the ban?
If you noticed unfamiliar logins, password-change emails or posts you didn't make, say so in your appeal. Then secure every linked account. Instagram's hacked-account flow is at instagram.com/hacked. If you also lost access, you may need to work through both the compromise and the disable.
#Should I report this to the police?
If someone has used your account to distribute illegal material, or is threatening you, contact the police in your country. In Malaysia you can contact PDRM or the National Scam Response Centre on 997 if money is involved. In the UK, use Report Fraud or the police. In Australia, contact ReportCyber or the police. If you are being blackmailed (sextortion), don't pay. Seek help from the police.
#Can the Oversight Board review it?
The Oversight Board can hear appeals on some content decisions after Meta's own review, using a reference ID. Its process is aimed at content rather than every account disable, so don't rely on it as your main route (Meta Transparency Center).
#What should I avoid?
- Paying "Meta insiders" or "unban" brokers. No external person can clear a CSE flag.
- Creating a replacement account straight away. Meta's terms prohibit getting around enforcement.
- Mass-messaging Meta employees on LinkedIn or email, which is ineffective and can expose your data.
- Sharing your password or one-time codes with anyone offering help.
#Where does a recovery service help, and where doesn't it?
A careful adviser can check for signs of compromise, help you set out a clear, factual appeal and make sure you don't miss deadlines or verification steps. They can't change Meta's decision. SocialSafe by AwareXone works only through official channels, never asks for passwords or one-time codes, and doesn't promise results. We reply within 5 hours between 9am and 11pm MYT. Malaysian cases start from the quoted fee and clients outside Malaysia are quoted and billed in USD, with the fee confirmed after case review. See how a case review works on the SocialSafe by AwareXone Instagram account recovery page, or check pricing and the Trust Center.
#How can I protect my account going forward?
- Set your account to private if you post family photos, and think twice about sharing images of children.
- Use two-factor authentication or a passkey.
- Download your data regularly.
- Remove unknown devices from Accounts Centre.
#What evidence should I keep while the appeal is pending?
- a screenshot of the disabled notice showing the stated reason and date;
- confirmation that your review request was submitted;
- emails from Instagram's real domains (you can check Instagram's genuine recent emails in the app) (Instagram Help);
- any security emails showing logins or changes you didn't make;
- a note of linked accounts in your Accounts Centre (such as Facebook profiles or other Instagram accounts) that might also be affected.
Don't keep or forward any image you think may have triggered the flag.
