Why Does Instagram Say "You Can't Share Links"?
Instagram won't let you share a link in a story, bio or DM? Common causes, including flagged domains and account limits, and what to check.

Instagram blocks a link when the domain is flagged as spam or unsafe, when the link breaks its Recommendation or Community Guidelines, or when your account has a temporary feature limit. Test the same link from another account, check Account Status, switch to a clean direct URL on your own domain, and avoid link shorteners.
Summary- Links can be blocked because of the destination, not your account.
- Shared link shorteners and some link-in-bio domains get flagged.
- Account feature limits can also block links.
- Check Account Status before requesting a review.
Link blocks are frustrating, especially for businesses that rely on bio links. The cause is usually either the link or your account. Here is how to tell which.

#Why can't I share links?
- The domain is flagged as spam, phishing or unsafe.
- The page breaks Instagram's guidelines, for example adult or deceptive content.
- You used a URL shortener shared by many accounts.
- Your account has a temporary feature limit.
- A link sticker or bio edit was attempted too often.
Meta's Spam policy covers links that promise one thing but deliver another, links that impersonate trusted domains, and pages with deceptive features such as forced redirects or pop-ups. If your link looks like any of these to Instagram's systems, it may be blocked everywhere on Instagram, including stories, DMs and your bio. Instagram's Recommendations on Instagram page explains that some content can be shared but not recommended, which is a different issue from a blocked link.
Shared shorteners and some link-in-bio services are used by many accounts, including spammers. If enough bad links use the same domain, Instagram may block the domain for everyone. A direct link on your own domain avoids that risk.
#How do I check what's wrong?
- Try the same link from another account. If it fails there too, the link is the problem.
- Try a different, clean link from your account. If that fails, the account is limited.
- Check Account Status for restrictions.
- Remove shorteners and use a direct URL on your own domain.
#How do I check the website itself?
- Open the link on a phone with mobile data and check it loads quickly with no pop-ups or chains of redirects.
- Make sure the page delivers what your post or story says it will.
- Check that the site has not been hacked. Hacked sites can redirect visitors to scams without the owner knowing.
- If you recently changed the site, such as adding a new payment page or tracking tool, check that it works for visitors.
If the site was hacked or flagged, clean it up first. A link that stays unsafe will keep being blocked, no matter how often you re-add it.

#What about the Review flagged links screen?
Creators reported a new Review flagged links screen from late September 2026. Meta has not announced it. If you see it, review the listed links calmly before you act. Our guide to the Review flagged links warning covers what it means and the unconfirmed ban-wave reports.

Because Meta has not published a help page for that screen, treat any claims about it with caution, including claims on social media about bans linked to it. If the screen lists links, remove the ones you do not recognise or no longer use, and keep the ones you are sure are safe.
#What common mistakes should I avoid?
- Using shared link shorteners.
- Repeatedly re-adding a link that was just blocked.
- Linking to pages that redirect several times.
- Appealing a link block before checking whether the link itself is flagged.
Do not try to sneak past a blocked link by writing the address with spaces or symbols, or by posting it as text on an image. That can look like an attempt to avoid Instagram's checks and may lead to a wider restriction. If you cannot share the link, tell people to search for your business name instead while you fix the cause.
#How do I keep the account safe while I sort this out?
- Never share a login code, password or backup code with anyone, including people who say they work for Meta, the police or a recovery service.
- Make sure the email address and phone number on the account are ones you still control, and remove any you do not recognise.
- Turn on two-factor authentication where the platform offers it, ideally with an authenticator app, and keep your backup codes somewhere offline.
- Log in only from the official app or by typing the address yourself, not from links in messages, comments or ads.
- Keep screenshots of every notice, email and step you take, with dates, in case you need them for a review or a report.
- Make one careful attempt at each official step rather than many rushed ones, because repeated failed attempts can trigger extra checks.
