Facebook Name Change Rejected? Why and How to Fix It

Facebook won't accept your new name or says wait 60 days? Why Meta rejects names in Malaysia, how to correct it with an ID, and what to do after a hack.

11 min read
Short answer

Facebook refuses a name that has symbols, numbers, titles, phrases or mixed scripts, blocks any change for 60 days after the last one, and may lock a name you were asked to confirm. Fix the name to match an ID, then use the let us know link on Meta's name help page. After a hack, secure the account first.

Summary
  • Facebook rejects a name when it breaks the name standards, when you changed it in the last 60 days, or when you were earlier asked to confirm it.
  • Remove symbols, numbers, titles such as Dato' or Dr, and mixed scripts, and use the name your friends call you that also appears on an ID.
  • If the right name is still refused, use the let us know link on Meta's page about name problems and attach one government ID such as your MyKad.
  • Put a nickname, maiden name or name in another script in Other names instead of forcing it into the main name field.
  • If a hacker renamed your profile, secure the account at facebook.com/hacked first, then ask Meta to correct the name with your ID.
  • Sellers who promise to skip the 60-day limit cannot change Meta's rules, never share your password or codes, and Meta makes the final decision on every name.

You typed your name into Facebook, pressed save, and it bounced back. Or Facebook says you cannot change your name for 60 days, or that you cannot update it because you were previously asked to confirm it. Sometimes the name on your profile is not even one you chose, because someone else got into the account.

The short answer: Facebook only accepts a name that follows its name standards and matches the name you use in everyday life, and it limits how often that name can change. Most refusals are fixed by cleaning up the name or by sending Meta an ID through its own help pages.

This guide explains each refusal, the official route for each one, the special case of a profile a hacker renamed, and the sellers who promise to skip the 60-day wait.

#Why Won't Facebook Let You Change Your Name?

There are three usual reasons. The name breaks Meta's rules (symbols, numbers, titles, phrases or characters from more than one language). You changed your name in the last 60 days, and Meta's page on reasons you can't change your name says you then cannot change it again for 60 days. Or Meta earlier asked you to confirm your name, which ties it more closely to your ID. Correct the name so it matches an ID, add nicknames under Other names, and if the right name is still refused, use the "please let us know" link on that same Meta page. Meta makes the final decision.

#Which Name Message Are You Seeing?

Screenshot the message before you try again. The exact wording varies by app version, language and region, and Meta is moving people from Facebook settings to Accounts Center, so match on the key words.

#The Names Meta Refuses, in Plain Words

Meta's page on names allowed on Facebook says the profile name should be the name your friends call you in everyday life, and that it should also appear on an ID or document from Meta's ID list. It does not allow:

  • Symbols, numbers, unusual capitalisation, repeated characters or punctuation.
  • Characters from more than one language in the same name.
  • Titles of any kind, professional or religious.
  • Words or phrases in place of a name.
  • Offensive or suggestive words.

In Malaysia this catches a few common habits. Honorifics such as Dato', Datuk, Dr, Ir, Haji or Ustaz in front of a name fall under titles. A Chinese name written in characters next to its romanised form in one field mixes two scripts. A shop name or "Kedai Kek Aminah" on a personal profile is a business, and Meta says profiles are for individual use only; a business belongs on a Page. Parts of your legal name such as bin, binti, a/l or a/p are not titles, since they appear on your MyKad.

Nicknames are allowed as a first or middle name when they are a variation of your real name, and Meta gives Bob for Robert as its example. Pretending to be anyone else is not allowed.

#The 60-Day Lock After Any Name Change

Every successful name change starts a 60-day wait. Meta repeats this on its Names on Facebook hub: you cannot change your name more than once in 60 days. It applies even when the change was a typo, and Meta does not publish any way to shorten it.

  • Before you press "Save changes", read the preview Meta shows after "Review change". A spelling mistake costs you two months.
  • Do not save a temporary or joke name to test what Facebook accepts.
  • If the change that started the wait was made by someone else, treat it as a security problem. See the hacked section below.

#When Facebook Says You Were Asked to Confirm Your Name

This refusal follows an earlier name check. Meta's names hub explains that when it asks you to confirm your name, you may lose some features for a while and may be asked to upload an ID or another item from its list, such as a membership card or post, that shows the name you use in everyday life. Meta's page on name changes also reminds you that "You may need to confirm your name on Facebook if asked" and that your name should match the name on an ID.

In practice, treat a confirmed name as tied to a document. To move away from it, expect to need a document that shows the new name: an updated MyKad, a passport, or for a married name, the papers that support it. Meta's page on being your authentic self adds that you may be asked to upload a government ID or another listed item showing your legal or authentic name, for example to keep using features such as Marketplace.

#How to Ask Meta to Correct Your Name With an ID

When the name is right and Facebook still refuses it, ask Meta directly. These steps use only Meta's own pages.

  1. Check the name against the standards above and make it match your ID exactly, including spacing and order.
  2. Try the change once in Accounts Center: "Profiles", your account, "Name", then "Review change" and "Save changes".
  3. If it is refused, open Meta's page on reasons you can't change your name and use the "please let us know" link below the steps.
  4. Attach one government ID, or two non-government documents if you have none. Meta asks you to send only what is required, because extra documents can slow the review.
  5. Write one or two plain sentences: the name you want, and why it changed, for example marriage or a corrected spelling.
  6. Submit once and wait. Sending the same request again and again does not speed it up.

If your name was refused while signing up, Meta's sign-up troubleshooting page points to the My name wasn't accepted form. That form says you may attach up to three files, ideally JPEGs, and that Meta may store your ID encrypted for up to one year to improve fake-ID detection unless you change your Identity Confirmation Settings.

#Which ID Works for a Name Correction

Meta's list of IDs it accepts gives two paths. Use this as a preparation checklist before you upload anything.

  • One government ID, such as a national identity card (MyKad), passport, driving licence or birth certificate.
  • Or two different non-government IDs, such as a student card, library card, employment verification, diploma or loyalty card.
  • A government ID shows your name plus either your date of birth or your photo. With two non-government items, both show your name and at least one carries a date of birth or photo.
  • The name on the document is exactly the name you want on the profile.
  • You may physically cover details Meta does not need, such as your IC number, before taking the photo. Meta does not accept images edited digitally to hide information.
  • The photo is sharp, well lit and shows the whole card. Our guide to a Facebook ID that keeps getting rejected covers photo problems in detail.

#Nicknames, Maiden Names and Names in Another Script

Many Malaysians go by more than one name. Put the extra ones under Other names rather than forcing them into the main field.

Meta's page on managing other names says you can list a name that differs from the one on your ID, such as a maiden name, nickname or professional name. Go to your profile, "About", "Names", then "Add other names", pick a name type and save. Tick "Show at top of profile" to display it beside your main name; even unticked, it shows in your About section and in search.

For a name in another script, Meta offers a language-specific name, which people see when they use Facebook in that language. Meta says the name should match how it appears on an ID, membership card or magazine subscription, and the feature is not available for every language, so check whether yours is listed before relying on it.

#A Hacker Changed My Facebook Name: What Now?

Attackers often rename a profile so it looks like someone else. The trap is the 60-day lock: their change starts the clock. Do not start with the name. Start with access.

  1. Go to facebook.com/hacked. Meta's hacked account page recommends using a device you have logged in from before, if you can.
  2. Secure the email account linked to Facebook: new password, and remove any forwarding rules or recovery details you did not add.
  3. Once back in, change your Facebook password, log out of devices you do not recognise and turn on two-factor authentication.
  4. Screenshot the wrong name, the date you noticed it, and any security emails about changes to your account.
  5. Try changing the name back in Accounts Center. If the 60-day limit blocks you, use the "please let us know" link on Meta's name page and explain that the change was made during a takeover, with your ID attached.
  6. Tell friends and customers from another channel that the renamed profile is yours and was hijacked, so nobody pays the attacker.

If the attacker also changed the email and phone on the account, the order of steps changes. Our walkthrough for a hacked Facebook with the email and phone changed covers that first.

#Mistakes That Get a Name Request Refused

  • Adding a title, emoji or full stop because it is how you sign off on WhatsApp.
  • Using a business name on a personal profile instead of creating a Page.
  • Sending an ID that shows a different spelling or order from the name you typed.
  • Uploading three documents when one MyKad would do.
  • Covering details with a digital blur or sticker instead of physically covering them.
  • Opening a fresh profile under the new name. It leaves your friends, photos and history behind on the old one and can look like impersonation.
  • Using an edited, borrowed or bought ID. It is fake identification and can cost you the account.

#"Name Change Bypass" Sellers and Other Scams

Search for this problem in English, Bahasa Malaysia or Chinese and you will find people offering to unlock the 60 days or bypass the name confirmation for a fee. They cannot change Meta's rules, and handing them your login puts the whole account at risk.

#If You Paid Someone or Shared a Code in Malaysia

Deal with the money first. The National Scam Response Centre FAQ says to contact your bank's hotline or the NSRC on 997 as soon as you discover the fraud, and then to make a police report at the nearest station within 24 hours. If you shared a login code, change your Facebook and email passwords at once and log out all other sessions.

#When a Case Review Makes Sense

Most name problems are solved with the right document and one clear request, and only Meta can change a name it has locked. A second opinion helps when a hack and a name lock are tangled together, when the profile carries a business or a public reputation, or when repeated requests have gone unanswered. SocialSafe by AwareXone, our recovery service, looks at your case before anything is agreed and tells you honestly whether an official route is still open; some accounts do not come back. You can see how we handle Facebook account recovery, and our Trust Center explains what we will never ask for, including your password and codes.

#Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change my Facebook name before 60 days?
Meta does not offer a way to skip the 60-day limit. If the change was a mistake caused by a hack, or you have a legal reason such as marriage, use the let us know link on Meta's name help page with a supporting document.
Why does Facebook reject my real name?
A real name can still trip the rules if it includes a title, punctuation, unusual capitals or two scripts, or if it does not match any ID. Remove the extras, match the spelling on your ID, and ask Meta through its help page if it is still refused.
Can I use my Chinese name and English name together on Facebook?
Not in the same name field, because Meta does not allow characters from multiple languages in one name. Put the second name under Other names, or use a language-specific name if your language is supported.
How long does Facebook take to review a name change request?
Meta does not publish a review time for name requests. Submit one complete request and avoid repeating it.
Can I use Dato' or Dr in my Facebook name?
Meta says titles of any kind, professional or religious, are not allowed in names. You can mention a title or profession in your bio or work details instead.
