Discord Account Impersonating You: How to Report It

Discord allows pseudonymous accounts, but it does not allow people to deceptively misrepresent who they are. If an account or server is pretending to be you, your community or your organisation, you can report it in the app and, for detailed cases, through a support ticket. Discord reviews the report and decides what to do. This guide covers what counts, how to report, what to save and how to avoid the scams that often follow.

#What does Discord count as impersonation?
Discord says it prohibits users from deceptively misrepresenting their identity, including creating fake profiles or impersonating individuals, groups or organisations (Discord). It defines impersonation as pretending to be a real individual, group or organisation, usually by using identity details such as a name or likeness to deceive others about who owns or is affiliated with a profile. Discord says impersonation can happen at the account or server level.
Discord also asks people who run parody or satire accounts or servers to label them clearly.
| What you see | What it usually is | Route |
|---|---|---|
| An account using your name and avatar to message your friends or community | Impersonation | Report it in the app |
| A server copying your community's name and branding | Server-level impersonation | Report the server and its messages |
| Someone claiming to be Discord staff in your DMs | A scam | Do not engage; report the account |
| You cannot log in, or your email or two-factor settings changed | A compromised account | See our Discord hacked account guide |
#What should I save before reporting?
- The impersonator's username and, if you can copy it, the user ID
- Screenshots of the profile, avatar and any messages it sent, with dates
- Message links from servers where it posted in your name
- Your own genuine username and, for a community, your official server invite
- Notes from people who were contacted, kept privately
#How do I report a Discord account impersonating me?
Discord says all users can report policy violations directly in the app (Discord). For messages, Discord's support article gives these steps (Discord Support):
- Select the message you want to report. On mobile, hold down on it; on desktop or browser, right-click it.
- Select Report Message.
- Select the type of abuse you are seeing.
You can also report the user profile from the app. Choose the reason that matches impersonation and add the details the app asks for. The exact wording of the options can change, so follow the current prompts.
#When should I submit a support ticket?
If the case needs more explanation, for example an impersonator targeting several servers, use a support ticket. Discord says its Help Center uses a support account that is separate from your Discord app account, with its own login (Discord Support).
- Sign in to the Discord Help Center with your support account.
- Choose the category that best matches your issue.
- Give a clear subject and describe what happened and when, and what you have already tried.
- Attach screenshots.
- Submit, then save the ticket number from the confirmation email.
#What happens after I report?
Discord says it may take enforcement action when it finds a violation of its Community Guidelines, up to and including permanent removal, and that it usually reserves permanent bans for severe violations (Discord). It does not publish a fixed timeline for impersonation reports.
#Common mistakes
- Following instructions from an account claiming to be Discord staff.
- Reporting without the username or user ID, so the account is hard to find.
- Leaving server moderators uninformed, when they can remove the impersonator from their server quickly.
- Using one shared login for a community's admin accounts, which makes takeovers easier.
#Avoid the follow-up scam
A common pattern is a message saying your account was reported by mistake, followed by an invitation to contact a fake staff member who then asks you to change your email or remove two-factor authentication. Discord says staff never contact users in the app for support. Never share your password, one-time codes or backup codes. Our guide on spotting fake recovery services lists other warning signs.
#How do I secure my own account while this is going on?
An impersonator sometimes appears after a real account has been compromised, or tries to trick you into handing over your login. Discord's hacked account guidance says a good first step is to reset your password and make sure Multi-Factor Authentication is turned on (Discord Support). It also recommends reviewing your Authorized Apps and removing any you do not recognise:
- On desktop or browser, open User Settings with the cogwheel icon in the lower-left corner.
- Select Authorized Apps and choose Deauthorize next to any app you do not want.
- On mobile, tap your avatar, then the cogwheel icon, then Authorized Apps, and remove unknown apps.
Discord says that if you believe your account has been compromised or accessed, you should submit a ticket through its hacked account form, and include details of any unauthorised transactions. Discord also warns that you are responsible for the security of your account under its Terms of Service, and that it may be unable to help recover an account that was not secured.
#What are the realistic limits?
Discord decides whether an account or server breaks its rules. Pseudonymous accounts, and clearly labelled parody accounts, are allowed. Server moderators control their own servers, so they can often act faster on their server than a platform-level report. For a cross-platform overview, see our impersonation and fake account removal guide. If your own account was disabled, see Discord account disabled.
AwareXone helps people and communities prepare impersonation reports through official platform channels. We are independent and not affiliated with Discord, the work is best-effort, and Discord makes the final decision. Read more about our impersonation removal support.
