Apple Account Locked? Getting Back In, and Your App Logins

Apple Account locked in Malaysia? What each message means, how to reset or request access, the recovery wait, and what happens to apps you signed in with Apple.

Short answer

A lock is usually Apple protecting you after too many wrong passwords or codes. Reset your password from a trusted iPhone, iPad or Mac, or at iforgot.apple.com, or tap Request Access if the alert offers it. If you cannot reset it, start account recovery and wait. Apps you joined with Sign in with Apple usually return with the account.

Summary
  • A locked Apple Account is usually Apple protecting you after too many wrong passwords or codes, and the way back is a password reset or a request for access.
  • Start on a trusted iPhone, iPad or Mac, or go to iforgot.apple.com yourself, and use the Request Access or Reset Password option Apple offers.
  • If you cannot reset the password, account recovery puts you in a waiting period that nobody, including Apple Support, can shorten, so keep other devices off.
  • Apps you joined with Sign in with Apple depend on your Apple Account, so contact each app developer if you still cannot sign in once Apple access is back.
  • Apple never asks for your password or verification code to help you, so ignore any call, SMS or seller offering to unlock the account.
  • Apple makes the final decision, and a request can be denied, in which case the account may not come back.

Your iPhone says your Apple Account is locked. iCloud stops syncing, and when you tap "Continue with Apple" in a social or shopping app, nothing happens.

Most locks are Apple protecting the account after too many wrong attempts, and a password reset or a request for access usually fixes them. If you cannot reset the password, account recovery gets you back in after a wait. Apps you joined with Sign in with Apple usually return with the Apple Account.

This guide covers each Apple message, the route for each, the recovery wait, your app logins, and the scams that follow a lock.

#What Should You Do If Your Apple Account Is Locked?

Reset your password from a trusted Apple device, or at iforgot.apple.com. Apple's page on locked, inactive and disabled accounts says a lock "for security reasons" follows too many wrong passwords or details, and a reset is the way back. If the message says locked or not active, tap "Request Access" in the alert. If you cannot reset the password, start account recovery and wait; Apple Support cannot shorten it. Once Apple works again, apps you joined with Sign in with Apple should too. If one does not, contact its developer.

#Which Apple Message Are You Seeing?

Apple uses several similar messages, and each points to a different next step. The wording below is from Apple's help pages at the time of writing; the exact text can vary by device, software version and region.

Apple Account messages and the first step for each, at the time of writing.

#Path 1: Locked for Security Reasons, Reset the Password

This is the most common case. Apple's page on resetting a forgotten password says the easiest route is a trusted device, meaning an iPhone, iPad or Mac already signed in to your Apple Account with a passcode set.

  1. On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap your name, then "Sign-In & Security", then "Change Password". On a Mac, open System Settings, click your name, then "Sign-In & Security".
  2. Enter your device passcode, or your Mac login password, and follow the steps to choose a new Apple Account password.
  3. If the phone asks you to wait an hour, that is Stolen Device Protection, which Apple says may delay password changes.

No trusted device? Apple suggests the Apple Support app on a family member's iPhone ("Reset Password", then "Help Someone Else"), a device at an Apple Store, or iforgot.apple.com, which may take a little longer.

#Path 2: Locked or Not Active, Request Access

Apple wants you to confirm the account is yours. Tap "Request Access" in the alert, and use the email or phone number you really sign in with.

If the request fails, Apple says you might see "This Apple Account is locked and can't be used". Its options then are a new Apple Account, or, for a device stuck on Activation Lock, a support request with proof of purchase. Keep the invoice from the Malaysian shop or carrier that sold you the device.

#Path 3: You Cannot Reset the Password, Start Account Recovery

Account recovery is for two-factor accounts where nothing else works. Apple's page on account recovery says it may take several days or longer, and Apple Support cannot shorten it. Try every email and phone number you might have used, and a recovery contact if you have one, first.

  1. Try to sign in from Settings on an iPhone or iPad, or System Settings on a Mac, and choose account recovery when offered. On the web, use "Reset Password" at iforgot.apple.com.
  2. Turn off every other device signed in to your Apple Account. Apple cancels recovery if the account is in use.
  3. Watch for Apple's confirmation email, which Apple says arrives within 72 hours with the date you can expect access.
  4. When the wait ends, Apple sends a text or automated call. If none arrives, continue at iforgot.apple.com after that date.

You can check progress at iforgot.apple.com. If you remember your password and sign in during the wait, recovery cancels and the account works straight away.

One exception: if you set up a recovery key, Apple's page on recovery keys says standard recovery is switched off. You need the 28-character key, your trusted number and an Apple device, and Apple cannot replace a lost key.

#What Happens to Apps You Joined With Sign in with Apple?

Sign in with Apple lets you join another company's app with your Apple Account instead of a new password. Apple's page on what Sign in with Apple is says it needs you signed in to your Apple Account with two-factor authentication on. While the account is locked, "Continue with Apple" cannot confirm you.

Your account in the app usually still exists; only the login method is blocked. Apple's page on managing Sign in with Apple says using it again signs you in to the same account, and some apps let you add a password so you can sign in without Apple.

If you chose Hide My Email, the app only knows a random address ending in @privaterelay.appleid.com. Apple's page on Hide My Email says that mail is forwarded to the verified email on your Apple Account. If that is a Gmail or work inbox you can still open, the app's reset emails may still reach you. If it is an iCloud inbox you cannot open, they will not.

#Decision Guide: Getting Your App Logins Back

  • Is your Apple Account working again? No: finish the Apple route first. Yes: go on.
  • Does "Continue with Apple" open your old account? Yes: add a phone number, a normal email and a password in the app's settings. No: go on.
  • Does it create a new, empty account? Do not build on it. You may be on a different Apple Account, or you first joined another way. Try the app's other login options.
  • Open Settings, tap your name, then "Sign in with Apple", and check the app is listed with the email you shared.
  • Still stuck? Apple's page on signing in to your Apple Account says to contact the developer when a third-party app will not accept your Apple Account.

Leave the "Delete" option in that list alone. Apple's Mac guide says that after you stop using Sign in with Apple, the app may ask you to create a new account.

When you write to a developer, give your username, roughly when you joined, that you used Sign in with Apple (and Hide My Email, with the relay address if you can see it), any receipts, and dated screenshots of the errors.

For TikTok specifically, our TikTok account recovery guide covers its routes. If the old phone number or email is gone, see getting back in after losing your email, phone or 2FA.

#Scams That Follow a Locked Apple Account

A lock message is an easy hook, because you already expect bad news from Apple. Apple's page on phishing and fake support calls says Apple will never ask for your password, passcode or verification code, never ask you to tap "Accept" on a two-factor prompt, and never ask you to turn off a security feature.

  • SMS in English or Malay, such as "Akaun Apple anda telah dikunci", with a link. Apple says to send a screenshot to [email protected].
  • Calls showing an Apple number. Apple says caller ID can be spoofed; hang up and contact Apple yourself.
  • Sellers offering to "unlock iCloud" or remove Activation Lock. There is no paid back door, only Apple's own routes.
  • Anyone asking for your code, recovery key or recovery contact's code. Keep all of them to yourself.

If you typed your password into a fake page, Apple says to change it straight away. If money left your account, call your bank's hotline or the National Scam Response Centre on 997, then make a police report; the NSRC 997 page asks you to report within 24 hours. Report phishing sites or a hacked device to CyberSecurity Malaysia's Cyber999.

#Mistakes That Slow Recovery Down

  • Guessing the password again and again, which causes the security lock.
  • Leaving an old iPad or Mac on during account recovery.
  • Restarting account recovery because the wait feels long.
  • Letting the SIM for your trusted number lapse. Ask your carrier for a replacement on the same number early.
  • Building followers or purchases on a new app account while you wait.

#When Expert Recovery Help Makes Sense

Most people get through an Apple lock alone, and the wait is the same for everyone. A second opinion helps when the Apple Account held logins for a business TikTok or shop app, when you suspect someone else caused the lock, or when a developer stops replying. SocialSafe by AwareXone, our recovery service, looks at what is locked and which app accounts depend on it, and tells you honestly whether an official route is open. Only Apple can unlock an Apple Account. Our account security service covers setting up logins that survive the next lockout, and our Trust Center lists what we never ask for. #Frequently Asked Questions

How long does Apple account recovery take?
Apple says it might take several days or longer, and its confirmation email, which arrives within 72 hours, gives the date and time you can expect access. You can check the status at iforgot.apple.com.
Can Apple Support unlock my account faster if I call?
No. Apple says contacting Apple Support cannot shorten the account recovery waiting period. Anyone who promises a faster unlock is not working for Apple.
Will I lose my TikTok or other app account if my Apple Account stays locked?
The app account itself usually stays where it is, but you cannot use "Continue with Apple" to reach it while Apple access is blocked. If the Apple Account does not come back, contact the app developer and ask whether it can attach a phone number or email to your existing account.
What does "This Apple Account is locked and can't be used" mean?
Apple says you may see it when your request for access to a locked account did not succeed. Apple's listed options then are creating a new Apple Account, or an Activation Lock support request if you have proof of purchase for the device.
Why does Sign in with Apple create a new account in the app?
It usually means you are signed in with a different Apple Account from the one you used before, or you originally joined the app another way. Check which Apple Account your phone is using, then try the app's other login options before you use the new account.
Can a family member help me get back in?
Yes, in two ways Apple describes. You can reset your password with the Apple Support app on their iPhone, and if you added them as a recovery contact they can get you a six-digit recovery code during account recovery.
