The NCSC advises starting with the provider's own help pages. 2. **Change the password** on the hacked account and on any other account that reuses it, and turn on two-step verification. 3. **Tell your contacts** you were hacked and to ignore recent messages from you. 4. **If you lost money,** tell your bank straight away and report it. Report Fraud said reported stolen sums from email and social media account hacking reached £6.3 million in the 2025/26 financial year, up from £1.2 million the year before ([Report Fraud](https://www.reportfraud.police.uk/social-media-hacking/)). ## Can you get money back from your bank? For unauthorised payments, such as ads charged to your card after a hack, the FCA says to tell your bank as soon as you notice, within 13 months, and that the refund should normally be in your account by the end of the next business day. Banks can refuse only in limited cases, such as if you authorised the payment or acted fraudulently ([FCA](https://www.fca.org.uk/consumers/fraudulent-payments)). Card purchases may also support a chargeback, and some credit-card purchases a Section 75 claim. This is general information, so talk to your bank about your own case. ## Do not hack back or pay a recovery hacker Unauthorised access is an offence under the Computer Misuse Act 1990, and many "recovery hacker" offers are scams.
