## Short answer

If you were removed as a manager or editor, you cannot add yourself back. Only the channel Owner, or a Manager under channel permissions, can invite you again from YouTube Studio. Ask the owner first. If ex-staff or an agency holds the channel, use the Brand Account handover route. If it was hacked, the owner recovers the Google Account first.

## Summary

- A manager or editor who has been removed from a YouTube channel cannot restore their own access, because only someone with permission rights can invite people back.
- First check whether you were removed, downgraded, or simply lost an invitation during a switch between channel permissions and Brand Account roles.
- If the owner removed you on purpose, the decision is theirs, so ask them directly and keep the conversation in writing.
- If the business owns the channel but ex-staff or an agency holds it, gather proof of ownership and follow the Brand Account handover route rather than reporting a hack.
- If a hacker removed everyone, the owner recovers the Google Account first through Google's official steps, then removes every account the attacker added.
- Nobody can re-add you through an insider at YouTube, Google does not work with recovery services, and you should never share a password or sign-in code.

You manage a YouTube channel for your company, a client or a creator. Yesterday it was in your account switcher. Today YouTube Studio opens your personal channel instead, or the tools you used to have are gone, and nobody has told you why.

The short answer: a removed manager or editor cannot put themselves back. Someone who still holds permission rights on the channel has to invite you again. What you do next depends on who removed you, and whether the channel was hacked.

This guide explains YouTube's two permission systems, how to tell which situation you are in, and the honest options for each, written for Malaysian marketing staff, agencies, freelancers and the businesses that hire them.

## Can You Get Back Into a YouTube Channel After Being Removed as Manager?

Yes, but only if someone with permission rights invites you again. Under channel permissions in YouTube Studio, the Owner and any Manager can add or remove people. Under the older Brand Account roles, only owners control who manages the account. A removed manager, editor or viewer has no button that restores their own access, and no YouTube help page we read describes support re-adding a removed person on request. So the first step is always a conversation with the owner. If the owner is your own employer and the person holding the channel has left, or the channel was hacked, there are separate official routes, covered below.

## Two Permission Systems, and Why It Matters

YouTube runs two ways of sharing a channel, and many teams do not know which one their channel uses. That matters, because the rules on who can remove whom are different.

Channel permissions are managed only in YouTube Studio, under "Settings" then "Permissions". YouTube's [channel permissions page](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/9481328) lists the roles Owner, Manager, Editor, Editor (Limited), Subtitle Editor, Viewer and Viewer (Limited). It says a Manager can manage permissions in YouTube Studio, while an Editor cannot. It also says the Owner can do everything except transfer ownership to other users.

Brand Account roles are the older system. A Brand Account is a Google account for a business or brand that several people manage from their own Google Accounts. Google's [Brand Account page](https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/7001996) says owners control who manages the account and that an account must have one primary owner. YouTube's [migration page](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/9367690) adds that a Brand Account manager cannot invite other users and cannot transfer the channel.

*How YouTube's two access systems differ, from YouTube and Google help pages read on 5 October 2026.*

| Question | Channel permissions | Brand Account roles |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Where access is managed | YouTube Studio, Settings, Permissions | Brand Accounts section of the owner's Google Account, Manage permissions |
| Who can add or remove people | The Owner and Managers | Owners (one of them is the primary owner) |
| Can a removed person re-add themselves | No | No |
| Can ownership be handed over here | No, the Owner cannot transfer ownership | Yes, an owner of 7 days or more can become primary owner |
| Invitations | Expire after 30 days | Sent by email for the person to accept |

## Which Situation Are You In?

Before you message anyone, work out what actually changed. Losing a channel from your switcher does not always mean somebody chose to remove you. Match what you see to the rows below.

*Lost YouTube manager access: symptoms, likely causes and the next step, at the time of writing.*

| What you see | What it probably means | What to do |
| --- | --- | --- |
| The channel has vanished from your account switcher and Studio | Your access was removed, or you are signed in with a different Google Account | Check you are on the Google Account that was invited, then ask the owner |
| You can open the channel but some tools are missing | Your role was changed, for example from Manager to Editor or Viewer | Ask the owner which role you now hold and why |
| The channel recently moved to channel permissions and everyone lost access | YouTube copies existing Brand Account users, but the primary owner must set each role and send the invite | Ask the owner to send you a channel permissions invitation |
| The channel recently left channel permissions | YouTube says everyone has to be invited to the Brand Account again | Ask an owner to re-invite you through Manage permissions |
| Your invitation link no longer works | Channel permissions invitations expire after 30 days | Ask for a fresh invitation and accept it promptly |
| The name, videos or live streams changed and the owner is locked out too | At least one Google Account linked to the channel has probably been hacked | Follow the hacked channel route below; this is not a permissions dispute |
| You are the business, and the only owner was a staff member or agency | The person holding the role controls access until they hand over | Document ownership and follow the Brand Account handover route |

One quick check helps in every case. YouTube says only managers and the owner can see the names and emails of people with access, under "Settings" then "Permissions" in YouTube Studio. If a colleague still has Manager access, ask them to read you that list. It tells you who now controls the channel.

## When the Owner Removed You on Purpose

This is the least comfortable case. The owner, or another manager, has ended your access, perhaps because a contract finished, a project changed hands, or someone tidied up the permissions list. YouTube's [Brand Account roles page](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/4628007) puts the responsibility on the owner to grant access only to trusted users, and it is their call.

- Send one short, polite message asking whether the removal was intended and, if you still have work to finish, which role they want you to hold.
- Ask them to invite the exact Google Account you use for work, so the invitation does not land on an old address.
- If you are owed invoices, files or reports, raise that separately and in writing. Access to the channel is not a bargaining chip.
- If the owner says no, accept it. Trying other ways back in, such as using a former colleague's login, is not an official route.

> Note: **Keep your own records while you still have access.** Agencies and freelancers often hold the only copies of thumbnails, project files and reports. Keep the source files you produced on your own storage as you work, within your contract, so a permissions change never cuts you off from your own work.

## When Ex-Staff or an Agency Removed the Business

Sometimes the roles are reversed. The business paid for the channel, but the person who set it up, a former marketing executive or the agency, is the only owner, and they have removed the company's managers. Here the business is the one locked out, and the route is a handover, not a hack report.

If the channel uses Brand Account roles, an owner can invite a new owner, who can then make themselves primary owner after holding the owner role for 7 days or more, as YouTube's [Brand Account roles page](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/4628007) explains. Managers do not get that option. Our guide to [taking back a Brand Account when the owner has left](https://www.awarexone.com/research/youtube-brand-account-recovery) walks through every step, so it is not repeated here.

If the primary owner is a staff address on your company's Google Workspace domain, your administrator controls that login. Google's Workspace page on [resetting a user's password](https://support.google.com/a/answer/33319) explains how an administrator resets a managed account's password and sign-in cookies from the Google Admin console. This is only appropriate for an account the company owns and manages, never for someone's personal Google Account. An authorised person can then add a trusted owner. Our wider guide on [a former employee holding company accounts](https://www.awarexone.com/research/former-employee-holds-company-social-accounts) covers the business side.

> Warning: **Never delete the owner's account first.** YouTube states that if you delete the primary owner account linked to your channel, the channel is deleted too. Do not close a departing employee's Google Account or Workspace mailbox until ownership has moved to someone the business trusts.

## When a Hacker Removed Everyone

If the channel name changed, unfamiliar videos or crypto live streams appeared, and the owner can no longer sign in either, treat it as a hacked channel. YouTube's [hacked channel page](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/76187) says every channel is tied to at least one Google Account, and a hacked channel means at least one of those accounts is compromised.

1. The owner recovers their Google Account through Google's [account recovery steps](https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/7682439), answering every question as best they can. Google says wrong guesses do not end the process.
2. Once back in, the owner reviews "Settings" then "Permissions" in YouTube Studio, or Manage permissions for a Brand Account, and removes every person or pending invitation they do not recognise.
3. The owner re-invites the genuine team at the right roles. YouTube recommends that managers and owners secure their own Google Accounts too.
4. If the channel was terminated after the hack, YouTube says an email with appeal details arrives once the Google Account is recovered, and the appeal may not be accepted if recovery is incomplete.

As a removed manager, your job is to secure your own Google Account, tell the owner what you saw and when, and wait for a fresh invitation. YouTube notes that hacking support is limited to incidents within the past 9 months. Our guide to [recovering a hacked YouTube channel](https://www.awarexone.com/research/youtube-channel-hacked-recovery) covers the clean-up in detail. If the channel was also renamed and left streaming a crypto giveaway, our guide to [a YouTube channel hacked and streaming crypto](https://www.awarexone.com/research/youtube-channel-hacked-crypto-livestream) covers that version of the takeover.

## Evidence Checklist Before You Ask for Access Back

Whichever case you are in, a clear record makes the conversation with the owner, your employer or a lawyer shorter. Collect this before you send anything.

- The channel URL and handle, and the Google Account email you were invited on.
- The date you last had access and the role you held, from old invitation emails if you still have them.
- Screenshots of the permissions list, if a colleague can still see it, with the date visible.
- Your contract, agency agreement or job description showing you were authorised to manage the channel.
- For the business: invoices for channel work, payments received into a company account, and the brand name registered to you.
- For a hack: screenshots of the changes, the security alert emails from Google, and the times you noticed them.

## Mistakes That Make Things Worse

- Asking the owner, or anyone, for a password or verification code. YouTube recommends channel permissions precisely so that nobody shares sign-in details.
- Guessing logins or using a former colleague's account. That is not an official route, and it turns a business disagreement into an unauthorised access complaint against you.
- Deleting the owner's Google Account to force a change. YouTube says the channel goes with it.
- Paying anyone who says they can restore manager access. Google states that it does not work with any service that claims to provide account or password support.

## Scams Aimed at Removed Managers

People who lose channel access often post about it, and scammers read those posts. Expect comments and direct messages from accounts calling themselves a YouTube partner manager, Google support or a recovery specialist, in English, Bahasa Malaysia or Chinese, who say they can re-add you through someone inside YouTube.

Google's own [account recovery page](https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/7682439) says you cannot call Google for help signing in, that it does not work with recovery services, and that you should not give out passwords or verification codes. Its [scam guidance](https://support.google.com/faqs/answer/2952493) lists Google impersonation, account recovery scams and YouTube phishing among the common tricks, and its advice is simple: slow down, check the details, and never send payment or personal information on the spot.

> Warning: **If you already paid or shared a code.** Change your Google password from a device you trust and sign out other sessions. If money left your account, call your bank and the [National Scam Response Centre on 997](https://www.malaysia.gov.my/en/categories/safety-and-community/cybersecurity/nsrc-997-hotline) within 24 hours, as the government advises, then make a police report at the nearest station. Our guide to [fake hackers offering account recovery](https://www.awarexone.com/research/fake-hackers-offering-account-recovery-scam) explains the usual script.

## When a Case Review Makes Sense

If the owner simply removed you, no outside service can change that, and you do not need one. A review is worth it when a hack and an ownership dispute are tangled together, when the business is locked out of a channel that carries its revenue, or when nobody can tell who the primary owner even is. SocialSafe by AwareXone, our recovery service, reviews what happened and tells you which official route is still open, working only through Google and YouTube's own processes. Some channels cannot be taken back, and Google makes every decision. Our [business and creator recovery service](https://www.awarexone.com/services/business-creator-recovery) explains how a review works, and our [Trust Center](https://www.awarexone.com/trust) sets out what we will never ask you for.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Does YouTube notify you when you are removed as a channel manager?

The YouTube help pages we read do not describe a notification to the person removed, so many people only notice when the channel disappears from their account switcher. Ask the owner to confirm what changed.

### Can another manager remove me without the owner knowing?

Under channel permissions, yes. YouTube lists managing permissions in YouTube Studio as something a Manager can do, so any Manager could have changed your role. Under Brand Account roles, only owners control who manages the account.

### Can YouTube Creator Support give me my manager access back?

Not in any process we could find. YouTube frames Creator Support help around eligible creators and hacked accounts that have already been recovered, and access to a channel is granted by its owner.

### I was a Brand Account manager. Can I make myself owner?

No. YouTube says managers cannot invite users, transfer the channel or change the primary owner. An existing owner has to invite you as an owner first, and you then wait 7 days before you can become primary owner.

### Will I lose videos I uploaded for the channel?

YouTube attributes public actions by a delegate, such as uploads, to the channel rather than to your personal account, so those videos stay with the channel. Keep your own copies of source files you are entitled to under your contract.
