## Short answer

If Instagram won't let you post, it's usually an upload problem: weak connection, low storage, an outdated app, or an unsupported file. If you see a message such as "You can't post right now" or a restriction in Account Status, it's a limit on your account. Fix the technical issues first, then check Account Status before retrying.

## Summary

- Most posting failures are technical.
- Clear storage and update the app.
- Large or unusual files can fail.
- A posting limit shows a message or appears in Account Status.
- Repeated retries can trigger limits.

Here's a fast checklist to separate a technical glitch from a restriction.

Last checked: 29 October 2026 against the sources listed at the end of this guide.

## Is it technical or a restriction?

| What you see | Likely cause |
| --- | --- |
| Stuck uploading or 'couldn't post' | Connection, storage or file |
| 'Try again later' | Temporary action block |
| 'You can't post right now' | Feature limit |
| Restriction in Account Status | Policy enforcement |

## How do I fix technical failures?

1. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
2. Free up storage.
3. Update the app.
4. Try a smaller file or different format.
5. Restart the phone.

Instagram's Troubleshooting page says to make sure you're on the latest version of the app and of your phone's operating system, then restart your phone, try both Wi-Fi and mobile data to rule out a weak connection, and if that doesn't help, delete and reinstall the app. Instagram says your photos and profile info are saved when you remove the app. If it still doesn't work, it could be a bug or broken feature, or a feature that isn't available to everyone yet.

Instagram's Report a technical problem page says you can shake your phone in the app and tap Report a problem, or go to your profile, tap Menu, then under More info and support tap Help and Report a Problem. Include your phone model, what you were doing when it happened, and a screenshot.

## What if it's a restriction?

Stop retrying, check Account Status for an end date and read our guide to [can't share posts now](https://www.awarexone.com/research/instagram-cant-share-posts-now).

If you can still log in, open Account Status. Instagram's Check your Account Status on Instagram page says it is in Settings, under More info and support. There you can see removed content that may lead to your account being taken down, see features you can no longer use, and request a review if you think Instagram got it wrong. Instagram says that in most cases you'll get a warning before losing access to your account.

Meta's Restricting accounts page says that for most violations the first strike is only a warning, and that accounts that keep posting violating content after repeated warnings and restrictions are disabled. For more severe policies, such as dangerous individuals and organisations or adult sexual exploitation, Meta says you may get longer restrictions from the first strike. Meta also says it notifies you when it removes content or adds restrictions, that you can see your violation history and some restrictions in Account Status, and that it sometimes makes mistakes: if you think it got something wrong, you can tell it in the app, and content found to follow the rules is put back.

Meta's Counting strikes page explains how penalties build up. When content breaks the Community Standards, Meta removes it and may add a strike to your Facebook or Instagram account, depending on how severe the content is, its context and when it was posted. Meta says it won't count strikes for most violations posted more than 90 days ago, or more than 4 years ago for more severe violations, that several removals made at once without separate notices may count as a single strike, and that all strikes on Facebook or Instagram expire after one year. Some violations, such as child sexual exploitation content, are severe enough that Meta disables an Instagram account after one occurrence.

## What common mistakes should I avoid?

- Retrying dozens of times in an hour.
- Deleting the app before saving drafts.
- Using third-party posting tools with your password.
- Ignoring Account Status.

## How do I keep the account safe while I sort this out?

- Never share a login code, password or backup code with anyone, including people who say they work for Meta, the police or a recovery service.
- Make sure the email address and phone number on the account are ones you still control, and remove any you do not recognise.
- Turn on two-factor authentication where the platform offers it, ideally with an authenticator app, and keep your backup codes somewhere offline.
- Log in only from the official app or by typing the address yourself, not from links in messages, comments or ads.
- Keep screenshots of every notice, email and step you take, with dates, in case you need them for a review or a report.
- Make one careful attempt at each official step rather than many rushed ones, because repeated failed attempts can trigger extra checks.

## When It Is Safer to Get Expert Help

Ask for help before you appeal if the account matters to your income, your business or your memories, if you have already had one appeal rejected, or if you cannot tell whether the problem is a bug, a restriction or a hack. That is where most avoidable losses happen.

### Why does my post get stuck at 99%?

Usually it's the connection or the file. Instagram's Troubleshooting page says to try both Wi-Fi and mobile data, restart your phone and update the app before anything else.

### Can I post from a computer?

Yes, at instagram.com, if the account isn't restricted. If posting fails on every device, check Account Status for features you can't use.

### Will deleting the app lose drafts?

Instagram's Troubleshooting page says your photos and profile info are saved when you remove the app. Drafts are stored on your phone, so they may be lost when you delete the app. Finish or save anything important first.

### How long do posting limits last?

Instagram does not publish a fixed time; check Account Status for any end date.

### Can AwareXone check my case before I appeal?

Yes. AwareXone offers a free case review. Send us what you see on screen and what you have already tried, and an expert will tell you whether to appeal, wait or take another route. We never ask for your password or codes.
