## Short answer

A restriction or temporary ban is a warning, not a full ban. A restriction ends on its own when the timer runs out, and you can still chat with existing contacts. For a temporary ban, remove any unofficial app such as GB WhatsApp and install the official app. Repeating the cause can lead to a permanent ban.

## Summary

- A restriction or temporary ban is a warning from WhatsApp, not a full ban, and it usually follows an unofficial app, scraping, or bulk and automated messaging.
- A restriction ends on its own when the timer runs out. You can still chat with people and groups you already talk to, but not start new chats.
- For a temporary ban, remove any unofficial WhatsApp app such as GB WhatsApp, install the official app and register your number again.
- Carrying on with the same app, tool or messaging habit can turn a temporary block into a permanent ban that may not be reversed.
- Nobody can lift a restriction for you. Ignore anyone selling an unban, and never share your verification code or two-step PIN.
- WhatsApp makes every decision on your account, and if the screen says the account can't use WhatsApp, you are dealing with a full ban instead.

You tap "New chat" to reply to a customer who just found your number, and WhatsApp stops you. A pop-up says "Your account is restricted right now", or the app shows a "Temporarily banned" message and a countdown. Your old chats are still there. You cannot tell whether this lifts tomorrow or is the start of losing the number for good.

In most cases it lifts. A restriction and a temporary ban are warnings, and both end once you wait out the timer and stop whatever triggered them. The two things that make it worse are carrying on with the same app or messaging habit, and paying someone who promises to remove it.

This guide covers what each notice means, what still works while you wait, how to leave an unofficial app safely, why bulk messaging catches out Malaysian businesses, and when it is really a full ban or a takeover.

## Why Is My WhatsApp Temporarily Banned or Restricted?

Because WhatsApp's systems saw activity on the number that looks like a breach of its Terms of Service. WhatsApp's page on [temporarily banned accounts](https://faq.whatsapp.com/1848531392146538) says a "Temporarily banned" message could mean you are using an unofficial version of WhatsApp or harvesting information, known as scraping. Its page on [restricted accounts](https://faq.whatsapp.com/717472490411581) says a restriction means recent activity might show signs of spam, automated or bulk messaging. A restriction needs no action from you: it ends automatically once the set time passes, and WhatsApp sends a notification. A temporary ban needs one action: switch to the official app or stop scraping, because WhatsApp says that if you do not, the account might be permanently banned. Nobody outside WhatsApp can shorten either one.

## Restricted, Temporarily Banned or Banned: Which Screen Is Yours?

These notices look alike on a small screen, but they sit at very different levels. The exact words can change between app versions, languages and regions, so match the meaning rather than every word.

*WhatsApp restriction and ban notices and the first step for each, at the time of writing.*

| What you see | What it means | Ends on its own? | What to do first |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| "Your account may be restricted soon" | An early warning: recent activity looks like spam, automated or bulk messaging | Nothing has been applied yet | Stop bulk sends, broadcasts to strangers and any automation tool today |
| "Your account is restricted right now" | A timed restriction: no new chats, new groups or linked devices | Yes, when the timer ends | Wait it out; check the time left through "New chat" |
| "Temporarily banned" | An unofficial WhatsApp app or scraping was detected | The timer ends, but the cause must go | Remove the unofficial app or tool, install official WhatsApp, register again |
| "You need the official WhatsApp to log in" or "You have been logged out for using an unofficial app" | WhatsApp has noticed you are on an unofficial app | No | Remove every unofficial WhatsApp app before installing the official one |
| "Account locked due to inactivity" | The number has not connected to WhatsApp for a long time | No | Register the number again as soon as possible |
| "This phone number can't use WhatsApp" or "This account can't use WhatsApp" | A full ban, not a restriction | No | Use "Request review" once, if it appears |

WhatsApp draws the line itself on its restricted accounts page: a restriction is not a ban, and "This account can't use WhatsApp" means the account is banned. If that is your screen, our guide to [a banned WhatsApp number and the Request review button](https://www.awarexone.com/research/whatsapp-account-banned-malaysia) is the one to read.

## What Still Works While Your Account Is Restricted?

More than people expect. According to WhatsApp's restricted accounts page, you can keep chatting and calling the contacts and groups you have exchanged chats or calls with before. What stops, for the length of the restriction:

- Starting chats or calls with new contacts.
- Creating new groups.
- Adding new members to groups.
- Using linked devices, and you may be logged out of some companion devices.

That last point hits small shops hardest. If staff answer orders on WhatsApp Web or a second device, those sessions can drop. Answer existing customers from the main phone, and give new customers another way to reach you, such as email or your Instagram or Facebook Page.

## How Long Does a WhatsApp Restriction Last?

WhatsApp does not publish one fixed length. The app tells you instead. WhatsApp says to tap "New chat" and pick a contact you have never chatted with before; the pop-up shows the time remaining if you are still restricted. When the time runs out, the restriction ends automatically and you get a notification in WhatsApp.

WhatsApp's help pages list no way to shorten it. Reinstalling the app, clearing its data or moving the SIM to another phone are not offered as fixes, and they can cost you a local chat history you have not backed up. Screenshot the pop-up with the time left, then use the waiting time to fix whatever caused it.

## Temporarily Banned for an Unofficial App: How to Switch Safely

Unofficial apps are the most common reason for a "Temporarily banned" screen. WhatsApp's page on [unofficial apps](https://faq.whatsapp.com/1217634902127718) calls them fake WhatsApp apps built by third parties, names GB WhatsApp, FM WhatsApp, TeleMessage and TM WhatsApp as examples, and warns that they can carry malware that steals your data. The same page says using them can get an account temporarily or permanently banned, or restricted, including the ability to link devices.

People often install these for extra features without realising they are not WhatsApp. Switching back takes a few minutes:

1. Screenshot the temporary ban message and the time shown.
2. Save order photos or receipts you cannot lose to your phone's files. WhatsApp says it cannot promise that a backup made on an unofficial app will transfer.
3. Uninstall the unofficial app, and any other unofficial WhatsApp apps on the phone.
4. Download [WhatsApp](https://www.whatsapp.com/download/) or the WhatsApp Business app from WhatsApp's website, the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store.
5. Register your phone number again with the 6-digit code WhatsApp sends to that number. Enter it only into the app yourself.
6. Turn on two-step verification once you are back in, and do not reinstall the unofficial app later.

WhatsApp's page on [account bans for unofficial apps](https://faq.whatsapp.com/1064395290901991) adds a warning worth taking seriously: WhatsApp can reinstate a ban if the account activity keeps breaking its Terms of Service. A second offence is more likely to be the permanent kind.

## What Counts as Scraping on WhatsApp?

Scraping means using an automated tool to collect other people's information. WhatsApp's page on [harvesting personal information](https://faq.whatsapp.com/434518851968943) gives examples: phone numbers, profile pictures and statuses. It says accounts suspected of scraping could be temporarily or permanently banned.

Many people who hit this never meant to scrape. They ran a tool sold as a number checker or group member extractor on a lead list. If you used anything like that, uninstall it and stop using the lists it produced.

## Running a Business on WhatsApp in Malaysia: Why Bulk Messages Trigger Restrictions

Many Malaysian sellers run their whole business on one WhatsApp number, and festive sales push them to message everyone at once. That is exactly the pattern WhatsApp's systems look for. Its guide on [how to use WhatsApp responsibly](https://faq.whatsapp.com/361005896189245) lists practices that may get an account banned:

- Bulk messaging, auto-messaging or auto-dialling. WhatsApp says it uses machine learning and user reports to detect accounts that send unwanted automated messages.
- Using contact lists that are not yours, such as numbers bought from a data list seller or copied from a group.
- Over-using broadcast lists. WhatsApp says broadcasts only reach people who saved your number, frequent broadcasts may lead people to report you, and it bans accounts that are reported multiple times.
- Carrying on messaging someone who asked you to stop.

For businesses, the [WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy](https://business.whatsapp.com/policy) goes further. It says you may only contact people on WhatsApp if they gave you their number and you have their opt-in permission to receive messages from you, and that you must respect any request to stop. It also says WhatsApp's systems may limit how many messages a business can send based on people blocking or reporting it.

There is one reassuring line for sellers who run ads. WhatsApp's page on [automated or bulk messaging](https://faq.whatsapp.com/5957850900902049) says boosting content may drive more people to message you, but receiving many messages at once will not result in an account ban. Inbound interest is fine. Unrequested outbound messages are the risk. The same page says WhatsApp's products are not intended for bulk or automated messaging, and that it built the WhatsApp Business app and the WhatsApp Business Platform to help companies manage customer conversations.

## Mistakes That Turn a Temporary Block Into a Permanent Ban

- Going back to GB WhatsApp or another unofficial app once the timer ends.
- Keeping a "WhatsApp blaster", auto-reply bot or scraping tool installed and running it again.
- Moving the same campaign to a second number. The Business Messaging Policy says that if WhatsApp terminates an account for violations, it may bar you and your organisation from all its products.
- Messaging the whole contact list the moment the restriction lifts, to catch up on lost sales.
- Ignoring "Your account may be restricted soon" as if it were a glitch.
- Paying an "unban" or "buka banned" service, or giving anyone your code, two-step PIN or MyKad.

> Warning: **Nobody can sell you an unban.** Adverts in BM, English and Chinese promise to lift WhatsApp bans and restrictions for a payment. WhatsApp's page on account bans says third party services can't ban an account or remove a ban: only WhatsApp can. A restriction ends on WhatsApp's timer whatever you pay. Nobody legitimate needs your 6-digit code or your two-step verification PIN. If you already paid or shared a code, call your bank's 24-hour hotline or the National Scam Response Centre on 997 straight away, then make a police report.

Some of these sellers pose as "Meta Support". Our breakdown of [fake Meta support accounts](https://www.awarexone.com/research/fake-meta-support-scam-malaysia) shows how to recognise them.

## A Safer Messaging Routine Once the Restriction Lifts

Run through this checklist before you start messaging new people again:

- Only the official WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business app is installed, and no bulk sender, extractor or auto-reply tool from outside WhatsApp.
- Every new contact asked you to message them, or messaged you first. A click-to-chat link on your website or Instagram bio lets customers start the chat themselves.
- Broadcast lists contain only customers who saved your number and agreed to hear from you.
- Every promotion tells people how to stop receiving messages, and you remove anyone who asks.
- Two-step verification is on, and your linked devices list shows only devices you recognise.

## Is It a Restriction, or Has Someone Taken Your Number?

Nothing in WhatsApp's description of a restriction involves registering your number again. If WhatsApp instead logs you out and asks for your number and a code, or you see that your number is no longer registered on this phone, someone may have registered it on another device. Our guide to [WhatsApp logging you out with the no longer registered message](https://www.awarexone.com/research/whatsapp-no-longer-registered-this-phone) helps you tell a harmless device change from a hijack.

A hijacker running spam from your number can also earn it a restriction. If you did not send those messages, recover the number first: our walkthrough of [a WhatsApp takeover after a verification code scam](https://www.awarexone.com/research/whatsapp-hacked-verification-code-malaysia) covers the re-registration steps.

Malaysian agencies come in only when something more than a restriction has happened:

- Money lost to a scam, including a fake unban service: the [National Scam Response Centre](https://nfcc.jpm.gov.my/index.php/en/about-nsrc) says to contact your bank's hotline or NSRC on 997 as soon as you find out. The 997 line runs from 8.00am to 8.00pm every day, including public holidays.
- A hacked phone or malware from an unofficial app: CyberSecurity Malaysia's [Cyber999](https://www.cybersecurity.my/portal-main/services/cyber999-overview) is the national point of contact for reporting computer security incidents, by online form, email, phone or its mobile app.
- A complaint about a communications service you could not resolve with the provider: MCMC's [complaints page](https://www.mcmc.gov.my/en/make-a-complaint/make-a-complaint) points to its portal at [aduan.mcmc.gov.my](https://aduan.mcmc.gov.my/).
- Your phone suddenly shows no service at the same time as WhatsApp trouble: call your telco from another phone and ask whether a replacement SIM was issued on your number.

## When Expert Recovery Help Makes Sense

Most restrictions need patience, not help, and a temporary ban needs one clean switch to the official app. A second opinion is worth it only when the picture is tangled: a business number restricted again after you changed how you message, a restriction that followed a suspected takeover, or a temporary ban that became a full one. SocialSafe by AwareXone, our recovery service, reviews the screens and timeline first and tells you plainly whether an official route is still open, even when the honest answer is to wait. The [recovery hub](https://www.awarexone.com/all-types-of-social-media-problem-solutions) explains how a case review works for WhatsApp, and our [Trust Center](https://www.awarexone.com/trust) sets out what we never ask for, including your verification code and PIN. WhatsApp still makes the final decision, and some numbers do not come back.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Can I still reply to customers while my WhatsApp is restricted?

Yes, if you have chatted or called with them before. WhatsApp says a restriction lets you keep communicating with existing contacts and groups, but blocks new chats, new groups, adding group members and linked devices until it ends.

### Will a WhatsApp temporary ban become permanent?

It can. WhatsApp says that if you do not switch to the official app or stop scraping after a temporary ban, the account might be permanently banned. Removing the cause is what keeps it temporary.

### Is GB WhatsApp safe to use?

No. WhatsApp names GB WhatsApp as an unofficial app, says it cannot check the security of such apps, and warns they may carry malware and lead to temporary or permanent bans.

### Can I contact WhatsApp support to remove a restriction early?

WhatsApp says you do not need to take any action and the restriction ends automatically after its set time. For full bans, WhatsApp says contacting support by email or chat cannot reverse the ban; only the in-app review counts.

### Why was I restricted when I only messaged my own customers?

WhatsApp looks at patterns, such as many messages to people who have not saved your number, frequent broadcasts or reports from recipients. Customers who never opted in, or who forgot they did, may report or block you, and that counts against the number.
