## Short answer

If you can still log in, change your password, turn on two-factor authentication and use Log Out Everywhere in your Twitch security settings. Remove unknown payment methods, check your payout method, disconnect apps and confirm your email. If you cannot log in, use Twitch's account access recovery or submit a Support ticket, giving the correct username.

## Summary

- Change your password quickly and turn on two-factor authentication.
- Use Log Out Everywhere in your Twitch security settings to end other sessions.
- Remove saved payment methods if you see purchases you did not make.
- Monetised creators should check that their payout method has not been changed.
- If you cannot get back in, submit a ticket to Twitch Support with the correct username.

A hacked Twitch account can mean unexpected purchases, messages you did not send, or, for creators, a changed payout method. Twitch's help centre sets out the signs of unauthorised access and a list of steps to take back control. This guide follows those steps in order, and explains how to contact Twitch Support if you cannot log in at all.

## How do I know my Twitch account was hacked?

Twitch lists signs that someone else may have accessed your account ([Twitch Help](https://help.twitch.tv/s/article/account-hacked?language=en_US)):

- Changes to your settings or profile that you did not make
- Purchases you do not recognise
- You can no longer log in with your details
- Notifications for creators you do not follow
- Whispers or chat messages you did not send
- Changes to your payout method or other account details
- Your account was unexpectedly suspended
- Your selected language was changed

If you see one or more of these, Twitch says to change your password as soon as possible and strongly recommends setting up two-factor authentication.

## What should I do first if I can still log in?

Twitch recommends these steps to secure the account ([Twitch Help](https://help.twitch.tv/s/article/account-hacked?language=en_US)):

1. Log Out Everywhere. In your security settings at twitch.tv/settings/security, choose to log out everywhere if you think your account was accessed elsewhere.
2. Delete payment methods. If you see purchases you do not recognise, remove all saved payment methods so no further purchases can be made while you secure the account.
3. Check your payout method, if you are a monetised creator. Make sure your chosen payout method is still selected in the onboarding information of your Affiliate or Partner settings.
4. Review browser extensions and remove any you do not recognise or trust.
5. Review programs and apps on the devices you use for Twitch and remove any you do not recognise.
6. Scan your devices for viruses and malware with trusted antivirus software.
7. Remove connections. Disconnect third-party apps in the Other Connections section of your settings.
8. Check the email address on your account in your security settings, and change it to one only you can access if needed.
9. Secure your email account by changing its password, especially if it was the same as your Twitch password.

> Warning: **Creators: check payouts early.** If you earn on Twitch, checking that your payout method has not been changed is one of the most important steps. Twitch lists it among its recommended actions for monetised creators.

## What if I cannot log in?

Twitch offers an account access recovery tool for people who need help logging in, and a contact form for Support ([Twitch Help](https://help.twitch.tv/s/article/how-to-contact-support?language=en_us)). Twitch says that even if you have lost access to your account, you can still submit a request and skip the Login button on the form.

1. Go to the Twitch Support contact form.
2. Choose the category and sub-category that match your problem, such as account or login issues.
3. Give the correct username for the account you are trying to recover, so Twitch can verify ownership.
4. Describe what happened, including any unauthorised charges.
5. Submit the ticket and watch your email for replies.

Twitch says it usually provides an initial response within 12 hours, though some issues take longer. It may ask for additional identification or clarification, so monitor your email. Twitch also says it only discusses account-specific information when a case is raised by the correct account.

Twitch Partners and Affiliates may be able to contact Support through live chat after logging in to the help site, rather than filing an email ticket.

## What if my account was suspended after the hack?

Twitch lists an unexpected suspension as one possible sign of unauthorised access. Twitch Support says suspension and appeal questions go through its appeals process. Our guide on [Twitch account suspensions](https://www.awarexone.com/research/twitch-account-suspended-appeal) explains that route.

## What should I check afterwards?

- Your channel name, profile and panels for changes.
- Recent whispers and chat messages, and warn anyone who received suspicious links.
- Stream key, if you stream, by resetting it from your stream settings.
- Subscriptions, Bits purchases and gift subscriptions made while the account was compromised.
- Brand partners or sponsors who may have been contacted; see [creator account hacked](https://www.awarexone.com/research/creator-account-hacked-brand-deals-at-risk).

## What should I include in a Support ticket?

Twitch's tips for contacting Support are to describe the issue in detail and to keep watching your email, because replies come there and Twitch may ask for more information. Useful details include the username of the affected account, roughly when you lost access, what changed, such as the email or payout method, and any purchases you did not make. If there were unauthorised charges, say so clearly and list the dates and amounts you can see. Twitch says that for urgent issues involving account access or unrecognised charges, it will be in touch as soon as possible, and it may ask for additional identification.

## Common mistakes

- Changing the Twitch password but leaving the email account on the same old password.
- Forgetting to log out everywhere, so another session stays active.
- Leaving unknown browser extensions installed, which can steal login sessions.
- Submitting a ticket under the wrong username.

## Watch out for recovery scams

Twitch's support routes are its help centre, contact form and, for eligible creators, live chat on the help site. People who message you offering to recover your account, or who ask for your password or codes, are not part of that process. Our guide on [spotting fake recovery services](https://www.awarexone.com/research/account-recovery-scams-how-to-spot-fake-recovery-services) lists the warning signs.

## What are the realistic limits?

Twitch controls account access and reviews Support tickets. Recovery depends on Twitch verifying that you own the account, which is easier when you give the correct username and keep your email secure.
