## Short answer

Contact Tumblr support using the Account access category and select My account was hacked as the reason. Tumblr says it cannot help you recover the account without access to its email address, so secure that inbox first. Once you are back in, end unknown sessions, change your password and turn on two-factor authentication.

## Summary

- Tumblr says that if you lost your account to a scammer, you should contact support under the Account access category and choose My account was hacked.
- Tumblr states that without access to the account's email address, it will not be able to help you recover the account.
- The Active Sessions list on the Account Settings page shows browsers and locations from the past 30 days, and you can end any you do not recognise.
- Tumblr says it automatically emails you about logins from new locations, new app authorisations and two-factor authentication being turned off, and you cannot switch these emails off.
- For a suspension, Tumblr says you can appeal up to 6 months after its decision, and previously terminated users may be blocked from registering again.

You try to open your Tumblr blog and the password no longer works. Or you can still get in, but there are posts you never wrote, a login email from a country you have never visited, or no password reset email arriving at all. You want to know where to start.

The short answer: Tumblr's own recovery page gives one route. You contact Tumblr support under the Account access category and pick My account was hacked as the reason. Tumblr also says it cannot help without access to the account's email address, so getting your email secure comes first. If your problem is a suspension instead, Tumblr has a separate appeals route.

This guide covers the recovery steps, what to do if emails or codes are not arriving, how to check sessions after you are back in, how to lock the account down, how to restore a deleted account, how Tumblr appeals work and the limits of what Tumblr offers.

## What Should I Do First If My Tumblr Account Is Hacked?

Tumblr's [account recovery page](https://help.tumblr.com/knowledge-base/tumblr-account-recovery/) says: "If you have lost your account to a scammer, please contact support with the 'Account Access' category and select 'My account was hacked' for the reason you're contacting us." It also says: "Without access to the account's email address, we will not be able to help you recover your account."

That second sentence sets the order of work.

1. Check you can still open the email account linked to your Tumblr account. If you cannot, recover that first through your email provider.
2. If you can reach the email, try the password reset on the Tumblr log in page and look in your spam folder too.
3. If the reset does not work, or the account was clearly taken over, contact Tumblr support with the Account access category and My account was hacked as the reason.
4. Once you are back in, end sessions you do not recognise, change your password and turn on two-factor authentication.
5. Remove posts you did not write and tell your followers.

Write to support from the email address on the account, and describe what happened in a few clear lines: your blog name, when you lost access and what changed. Never put your password in the message. Tumblr's account protection page says Tumblr staff will never ask you for your password.

## What If Password Reset Emails or Two-Factor Codes Are Not Arriving?

Tumblr's [recovery page](https://help.tumblr.com/knowledge-base/tumblr-account-recovery/) says that if you are not receiving password reset emails or two-factor authentication codes, you should contact support using the Account access category. So this is a support case, not something you can fix by requesting more codes.

There are a few common reasons, and Tumblr's pages do not list them, so treat these as checks rather than a diagnosis. Check that the email address you are using is the one on the account. Look in spam and junk folders. Check that your email account itself is not locked or has not been taken over.

If you have lost access to your email, the recovery page names Google, Microsoft, Apple, Yahoo, AOL, Proton Mail and Fastmail as providers with their own options for recovering access. Our guide on [hacks that get past two-factor authentication](https://www.awarexone.com/research/hacked-even-with-two-factor-authentication) covers the email side in more detail.

## How Do I Check Who Has Been in My Tumblr Account?

Tumblr's [account activity page](https://help.tumblr.com/knowledge-base/account-activity/) says it automatically sends an email whenever there is activity that could indicate someone else has accessed your account. That includes logging in from a new or unfamiliar location, authorising a new app and disabling two-factor authentication. It says you will not get a login notification if you log in from a location you have used within the past two months, and that these emails cannot be turned off.

It also describes Active Sessions. On the Account Settings page, scroll to Active Sessions to see the browsers and locations that have accessed your account over the past 30 days. If you see a session you do not recognise, you can end it by clicking the X next to it. Tumblr says this section shows activity from browsers, including mobile browsers, but not when you use the app.

Because the app is not shown, also check your authorised apps. Tumblr says you can view and manage them on the apps settings page. If you see a login you do not recognise, the page says to change your password immediately.

## How Do I Lock the Account Down Once I Am Back In?

| Step | What Tumblr says | Where |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Use a unique password | Avoid reusing passwords, especially one used for your email or other social media | Tumblr says a password manager helps |
| Make your email password strong | If someone gains access to your email, they can reset your passwords and log in | Your email provider |
| Turn on two-factor authentication | You enter a code from an authenticator app as well as your password | Settings, then the Security section |
| Save backup codes | Tumblr recommends downloading a copy and storing it somewhere safe, in case you lose your authenticator app | Settings, then Generate backup codes |
| Check active sessions and apps | End unknown sessions and review authorised apps | Account Settings and apps settings |

Tumblr's [protecting your account page](https://help.tumblr.com/knowledge-base/protecting-your-account/) says that with two-factor authentication, even if someone gets your password, they cannot log in without your authenticator app too. Its [two-factor authentication page](https://help.tumblr.com/knowledge-base/two-factor-authentication/) explains how to turn it on from the Security section of your settings, on the web or in the apps.

## What If the Hacker Deleted My Account?

Tumblr's page on [deleting your account or blog](https://help.tumblr.com/knowledge-base/delete-your-account-or-blog/) says deleted accounts can be recovered for 30 days. It says that when an account is deleted, Tumblr sends a confirmation email with a link to restore it, and that if you cannot find that email you can search for messages from Tumblr. If you have trouble restoring on your own, it says to contact support from the account's registered email address, choose Account Access and use the reason for an account deleted by accident.

After 30 days the page says the account is permanently deleted and cannot be recovered. It also says that a secondary blog deleted on its own, rather than through account deletion, cannot be recovered. If you suspect a hacker deleted your account, check the registered email inbox for that message straight away, and do not wait.

## What If Tumblr Suspended or Terminated My Account?

Tumblr's [appeals page](https://help.tumblr.com/knowledge-base/appeals-on-tumblr/) says that if your content is removed, or your blog or account is terminated for a User Guidelines violation, you receive an email at the address on your account. That is a reason to keep the registered email up to date, and to read it before you reply to anything.

The page says that if you believe the decision was a mistake and your site, account and content do not break the User Guidelines or Terms of Service, you can appeal using the link in its help article. It says not to reply to the original notification, because replies sent to content removal notifications will not reach Tumblr. It also says appeals are reviewed by humans without undue delay and that you will be told the final decision. It gives no number of days for the review.

- You can submit an appeal up to 6 months after Tumblr's initial moderation decision.
- If you were previously terminated for violating the User Guidelines, you may be blocked from registering a new account. Tumblr says this ability is restored if you successfully appeal.
- If you think your account was wrongly terminated, Tumblr's recovery page says to contact support and use the Terminated account category.
- For posts flagged as sexually explicit, you can review and appeal from the Review flagged posts section of your blog settings. Reblogs of flagged content are not appealable.
- Under Article 21 of the EU Digital Services Act, you may be able to take an appeal to a certified out-of-court dispute settlement body. Tumblr says it cannot give specific advice on this process.

If a hacker posted from your account before it was suspended, include that in your appeal in plain words, and keep the dates. Tumblr's pages do not say how it treats hacked accounts when reviewing an appeal, so we cannot say what outcome to expect.

## Watch for Fake Recovery Offers

A lost Tumblr account can bring offers in comments, asks and messages from people who say they can recover it. Tumblr's recovery page points only to its own support route, and its protection page says staff will never ask for your password. Do not share your password or any code, and do not pay anyone who says they have a contact at Tumblr. Our guide to [spotting fake recovery services](https://www.awarexone.com/research/account-recovery-scams-how-to-spot-fake-recovery-services) shows the usual pattern.

For the wider steps after any account is taken, our guide to [what to do in the first 24 hours](https://www.awarexone.com/research/hacked-account-what-to-do-first-24-hours) covers email, phone and other accounts.

## What Tumblr Will and Will Not Do

Tumblr says plainly that it will not be able to help you recover an account without access to its email address. Its pages give no review time for either hacked account cases or appeals, and none of them promises that an account will be returned. No outside service can recover the account or override Tumblr's decision.

## When a Case Review Makes Sense

If you have lost access to both your Tumblr account and the email linked to it, or you are not sure whether your problem is a hack, a deletion or a suspension, a review can help you work out which official route to use first and what to prepare. SocialSafe by AwareXone is a Malaysia-based service, independent of Tumblr, that helps you use official recovery routes. We never ask for your password or login codes and we cannot change Tumblr's decisions.
