## Short answer

Threads doesn't use the word shadowban, but it can stop recommending your posts if they may break its recommendation guidelines. Check Account Status in the Threads app for recommendation issues, and see whether replies show as hidden. Lower reach can also be normal. Remove flagged content, avoid engagement bait.

## Summary

- Check Account Status in Threads.
- Reach can drop without any penalty.
- Recommendation limits are the closest thing to a shadowban.
- Hidden replies can be the poster's choice.
- Fix flagged content, then wait.

Here's how to check what's really happening on Threads.

Last checked: 29 October 2026 against the sources listed at the end of this guide.

## How do I check?

1. Open Account Status in the Threads app settings.
2. Look for recommendation or content issues.
3. Ask a non-follower to search for your posts.
4. Check whether replies are hidden by the poster.

> Warning: **One wrong step can cost you the account.** One wrong step can cost you the account, so know what you are doing before you start. If you are not sure, do not submit an appeal yet. Ask AwareXone for a free expert review first, then act.

Threads announced Account Status on its official @threads account on 8 May 2025, describing it as a way to see actions taken on any posts or replies that break the Community Standards, and to say if you think a mistake was made. You'll get a notification once it reviews your report. A later @threads post gives the path as Settings, then Account, then Account status.

Instagram's About disabled Threads profiles page covers what happens if the Threads profile itself is disabled. If you can still post and others can see your profile, a drop in reach is more likely a recommendation issue than a disable.

## What lowers reach?

| Cause | Fix |
| --- | --- |
| Recommendation guideline issue | Remove or appeal the post |
| Engagement bait | Write naturally |
| Repeated reposts | Post fresh content |
| Normal variation | Wait |

Instagram's Recommendations on Instagram page says its Recommendations Guidelines are stricter than the Community Standards, because recommended content comes from accounts people haven't chosen to follow. Content can be allowed on Instagram but not recommended if it is sensitive, for example content that may depict violence, that may be sexually suggestive, or that promotes regulated products. Unoriginal content repurposed from another source with only minor edits, long captions unrelated to the content, coordinated comment networks, and content rated false by third-party fact-checkers can also be left out. Instagram says it also tries not to recommend accounts that recently broke the Community Guidelines, repeatedly used misleading practices to build a following, such as buying likes, or have been banned from running ads.

Meta's Counting strikes page explains how penalties build up. When content breaks the Community Standards, Meta removes it and may add a strike to your Facebook or Instagram account, depending on how severe the content is, its context and when it was posted. Meta says it won't count strikes for most violations posted more than 90 days ago, or more than 4 years ago for more severe violations, that several removals made at once without separate notices may count as a single strike, and that all strikes on Facebook or Instagram expire after one year. Some violations, such as child sexual exploitation content, are severe enough that Meta disables an Instagram account after one occurrence.

## What common mistakes should I avoid?

- Deleting and reposting the same post.
- Using engagement bait.
- Buying engagement.
- Assuming every drop is a penalty.

Instagram's Secure your Instagram account page calls two-factor authentication the single most effective step to protect an account from hackers, because it asks for a code when someone logs in from a device Instagram doesn't recognise. It also recommends a strong, unique password you haven't used elsewhere, avoiding personal details like names and birthdays, and never giving your password to anyone you don't know and trust.

Instagram's page on how it uses artificial intelligence to moderate content says it removes content that goes against the Community Standards, and that content which doesn't break the rules but may be inappropriate can be limited from Explore instead of removed. AI can detect and remove content before anyone reports it, and it sends some content to human review teams, who make the final decision. Instagram says that if it took down content you don't believe goes against the Community Standards, you can request a review.

Meta's Restricting accounts page says that for most violations the first strike is only a warning, and that accounts that keep posting violating content after repeated warnings and restrictions are disabled. For more severe policies, such as dangerous individuals and organisations or adult sexual exploitation, Meta says you may get longer restrictions from the first strike. Meta also says it notifies you when it removes content or adds restrictions, that you can see your violation history and some restrictions in Account Status, and that it sometimes makes mistakes: if you think it got something wrong, you can tell it in the app, and content found to follow the rules is put back.

## How do I keep the account safe while I sort this out?

- Never share a login code, password or backup code with anyone, including people who say they work for Meta, the police or a recovery service.
- Make sure the email address and phone number on the account are ones you still control, and remove any you do not recognise.
- Turn on two-factor authentication where the platform offers it, ideally with an authenticator app, and keep your backup codes somewhere offline.
- Log in only from the official app or by typing the address yourself, not from links in messages, comments or ads.
- Keep screenshots of every notice, email and step you take, with dates, in case you need them for a review or a report.
- Make one careful attempt at each official step rather than many rushed ones, because repeated failed attempts can trigger extra checks.

## When It Is Safer to Get Expert Help

Ask for help before you appeal if the account matters to your income, your business or your memories, if you have already had one appeal rejected, or if you cannot tell whether the problem is a bug, a restriction or a hack. That is where most avoidable losses happen.

### Is it linked to Instagram?

Threads has its own Account Status, under Settings, then Account. Your Threads profile is linked to your Instagram account, and Meta's Counting strikes page says strikes apply to Facebook or Instagram accounts.

### How long does it last?

Meta doesn't publish a fixed time. Removing or editing the content shown in Account Status, or winning a review, is the usual way to lift a limit.

### Can I appeal?

Yes. Threads said when it launched Account Status that you can tell it if you think it made a mistake, and you'll get a notification once it reviews your report.

### Can you help?

Yes. AwareXone can review what your Account Status shows and explain what's affecting your reach.

### Can AwareXone check my case before I appeal?

Yes. AwareXone offers a free case review. Send us what you see on screen and what you have already tried, and an expert will tell you whether to appeal, wait or take another route. We never ask for your password or codes.
