## Short answer

If Telegram is open on another device, turn on 2-Step Verification, then go to Devices or Active Sessions and terminate the session on the stolen phone. Contact your phone provider to block the old SIM and issue a new one with your number. With no other device, get the new SIM first, then log in and end the old session.

## Summary

- Telegram identifies accounts by phone number, so whoever has the number can usually log in.
- From another device, turn on 2-Step Verification and terminate the session on the stolen phone.
- Ask your phone provider to block the old SIM and issue a new one with your number.
- Without another logged-in device, get the new SIM first, then log in and end the old session.
- Set a recovery email for your 2-Step Verification password and keep it secure.

A stolen phone is stressful enough without worrying about who can read your messages. With Telegram, the phone number is central: Telegram says the number is the only way it identifies a user, so whoever has the number has the account. That means acting quickly on both Telegram and your SIM. This guide follows Telegram's own FAQ for what to do, depending on whether you are still logged in on another device.

## Why does the phone number matter so much?

Telegram says that the phone number is currently the only way it identifies a Telegram user, and that it does not collect additional information about you. As a result, it says it cannot help unless you have access either to the phone number or to Telegram itself on one of your devices ([Telegram FAQ](https://telegram.org/faq)).

That makes two things urgent: cutting off the stolen phone's session, and making sure nobody else can use your number to log in.

## What if I am still logged in on another device?

If you have Telegram on a computer, tablet or second phone, Telegram gives these steps ([Telegram FAQ](https://telegram.org/faq)):

1. Go to Settings, then Privacy and Security, and turn on Two-Step Verification. Then the phone number alone is not enough to log in.
2. Go to Settings, then Devices, or Privacy and Security, then Active Sessions, and terminate the session on the stolen phone.
3. Contact your phone provider so they block the old SIM and issue a new one with your number.
4. If you decide to move to a new number, go to Settings, tap your phone number and change it.

Telegram says that once you terminate the old session, whoever has your phone cannot log in again, because they do not know your password.

## What if I have no other device logged in?

Telegram's steps are different in this case ([Telegram FAQ](https://telegram.org/faq)):

1. Contact your phone provider first, so they block the old SIM and issue a new one with your number.
2. Wait until you receive the new SIM with your old number.
3. Log in to Telegram on a new device.
4. Go to Settings, then Devices or Active Sessions, and terminate the session on the old phone.

> Warning: **Do this quickly.** Until the old SIM is blocked, anyone holding it may be able to receive your login codes by SMS. Calling your provider is one of the most important steps in both cases.

## How does 2-Step Verification protect me?

Telegram says that once 2-Step Verification is on, you need both an SMS code and a password to log in. You can also set a recovery email address to help regain access if you forget the password, and Telegram says that recovery email should itself be protected with a strong password and two-step verification where possible ([Telegram FAQ](https://telegram.org/faq#q-how-does-2-step-verification-work)).

Telegram also supports passkeys, which let you log in with your device PIN, fingerprint or face scan instead of an SMS code. It says you can still request an SMS code with a passkey, so you should always keep an up-to-date phone number that you control.

## Should I wipe the stolen phone?

Telegram says common thieves often throw away the SIM, then wipe and sell the device, so the risk to your data from ordinary theft may be limited. If you are worried about the data and cannot log the device out, it suggests wiping it remotely using Apple's or Android's own tools, which needs to have been set up in advance.

## What about Secret Chats?

Telegram says Secret Chats are device-specific and are not part of the Telegram cloud. They can only be accessed on the device where they were created. Your normal cloud chats will be available when you log in on a new device, but Secret Chats from the stolen phone will not be.

## What should I check afterwards?

- Active Sessions, to make sure only your own devices are listed.
- Your 2-Step Verification password and recovery email.
- Groups and channels you own, for any changes.
- Messages sent from your account while the phone was missing, and warn contacts if needed.
- Your phone provider account, to make sure no further SIM changes are made without you.

If you suspect the theft was linked to someone taking over your number, see our guide on [SIM swap attacks](https://www.awarexone.com/research/sim-swap-malaysia-accounts-hacked).

## What if I move to a new number?

Telegram says each phone number is a separate account. If you will not use the old number again, it says to go to Settings and change the number connected to your account to the new one, and warns that you must have access to your connected number or you risk losing the account. If you already have a different Telegram account on the new number, you need to delete that account before you can move yours onto it.

## Common mistakes

- Waiting to call the phone provider, which leaves the number open to misuse.
- Forgetting to terminate the stolen phone's session after getting a new SIM.
- Setting 2-Step Verification without a recovery email, then forgetting the password.
- Trusting anyone who contacts you claiming to be Telegram support on other social media.

## Watch out for fake Telegram support

Telegram says it relies on volunteers for in-app support and that its official login help account on X is @smstelegram. It warns that it does not have other support accounts on social media, and that anyone on Facebook or another platform saying they are Telegram is not. Never share your login code or password with anyone.

## What are the realistic limits?

Telegram ties accounts to phone numbers and says it cannot help unless you have the number or another logged-in device. Getting your number back through your provider is therefore essential. From another device, go to Settings, then Devices or Active Sessions, and terminate the session on the old phone.

### Will I lose my chats?

Cloud chats are available when you log in again. Telegram says Secret Chats are device-specific and only exist on the device where they were created.
