## Short answer

If someone blocked you, their profile usually shows "User not found" or no posts, and you can't follow or message them. If they restricted you, you can still see their profile and posts, but your comments are visible only to you and they won't see when you're online or if you've read their messages.

## Summary

- Instagram doesn't notify you when you're blocked or restricted.
- Blocked: profile may look empty or not found.
- Restricted: your comments are visible only to you.
- Neither affects your account standing.
- Account restrictions by Instagram appear in Account Status.

It's natural to wonder. Here's what each looks like from your side.

## How can I tell the difference?

| Sign | Blocked | Restricted |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Can see their profile | Often no | Yes |
| Can follow | No | Yes |
| Comments visible to others | No | Only after they approve |
| Messages | Can't send or not delivered | Go to message requests |
| Search shows them | Often not | Yes |

Instagram's What happens when you block someone page says people aren't notified when you block them. After a block, the blocked person's likes and comments are removed from your posts and aren't restored if you unblock them, they can't mention or tag you, and messages they send in Direct aren't received or delivered later. Your old chat stays in your inbox, but you can't message them. In a shared group chat, you can choose to stay or leave.

Instagram's Restrict or unrestrict someone page explains that a restricted person can't see when you're online or whether you've read their messages. Their new comments on your posts are visible only to them unless you approve them, you don't get notifications for their future comments, and their chat moves to Message Requests. Restricting is quieter than blocking: the person can still see your profile and posts.

## Could it be my own account?

If many profiles look empty or features fail, the issue may be your account. Check Account Status.

If you can still log in, open Account Status. Instagram's Check your Account Status on Instagram page says it is in Settings, under More info and support. There you can see removed content that may lead to your account being taken down, see features you can no longer use, and request a review if you think Instagram got it wrong. Instagram says that in most cases you'll get a warning before losing access to your account.

Instagram's Troubleshooting page says to make sure you're on the latest version of the app and of your phone's operating system, then restart your phone, try both Wi-Fi and mobile data to rule out a weak connection, and if that doesn't help, delete and reinstall the app. Instagram says your photos and profile info are saved when you remove the app. If it still doesn't work, it could be a bug or broken feature, or a feature that isn't available to everyone yet.

## What common mistakes should I avoid?

- Making fake accounts to check someone's profile.
- Harassing the person through other platforms.
- Assuming your account is banned.
- Using apps that claim to reveal who blocked you.

Instagram's Secure your Instagram account page calls two-factor authentication the single most effective step to protect an account from hackers, because it asks for a code when someone logs in from a device Instagram doesn't recognise. It also recommends a strong, unique password you haven't used elsewhere, avoiding personal details like names and birthdays, and never giving your password to anyone you don't know and trust.

Instagram's block page also notes that when someone blocks you from the app, they can choose to block just your profile or your profile and any other profiles you have or may create. If you're following several profiles owned by the same person, each one has to be blocked separately on their side, so you may still see one of their accounts while another is blocked.

## How do I keep the account safe while I sort this out?

- Never share a login code, password or backup code with anyone, including people who say they work for Meta, the police or a recovery service.
- Make sure the email address and phone number on the account are ones you still control, and remove any you do not recognise.
- Turn on two-factor authentication where the platform offers it, ideally with an authenticator app, and keep your backup codes somewhere offline.
- Log in only from the official app or by typing the address yourself, not from links in messages, comments or ads.
- Keep screenshots of every notice, email and step you take, with dates, in case you need them for a review or a report.
- Make one careful attempt at each official step rather than many rushed ones, because repeated failed attempts can trigger extra checks.

## When It Is Safer to Get Expert Help

Ask for help before you appeal if the account matters to your income, your business or your memories, if you have already had one appeal rejected, or if you cannot tell whether the problem is a bug, a restriction or a hack. That is where most avoidable losses happen.

### Can I see who blocked me?

No. Instagram's block page says people aren't notified when they're blocked, and there's no list of who blocked you.

### Does restricting hurt my account?

No. Restricting is a privacy tool someone uses on their own account. It isn't a penalty from Instagram and doesn't appear in your Account Status.

### Can a deactivated account look like a block?

Yes. Instagram's Permanently delete or deactivate page says people can temporarily deactivate their profile to take a break, or delete it, which permanently removes their profile, photos, comments, likes and followers. A deleted profile can't be found at all, so from the outside it can look like a block.

### Should I make a new account to check?

It's better not to. Meta's Account Integrity policy limits creating accounts to get around restrictions, and a second account can complicate things if your main account is ever reviewed.

### Can AwareXone check my case before I appeal?

Yes. AwareXone offers a free case review. Send us what you see on screen and what you have already tried, and an expert will tell you whether to appeal, wait or take another route. We never ask for your password or codes.
