## Short answer

Reddit's reputation filter is a moderator setting that holds content from accounts that may be spammers or new. It is informed by the Contributor Quality Score, which uses karma, verification and other signals. Reddit's user help says to check the community rules and your karma, then send mod mail if the removal seems wrong.

## Summary

- Reddit's reputation filter and Contributor Quality Score pages are written for moderators, so they explain the tools but give no appeal steps for users.
- Reddit says the reputation filter looks at user behaviour and not at what the post says, and that anyone a moderator has approved is not caught.
- Reddit says every account has a Contributor Quality Score built from signals such as past actions, network and location signals and account security steps.
- Reddit's user help page says to check your sort order, the community rules and your community karma, then send mod mail if you think a removal was wrong.
- One careless step, such as opening a new account to dodge a filter, can cost you the account you have, so know what you are doing first.

You post on Reddit, and it disappears. The notice says it was removed by Reddit's filters, there is no named rule and no moderator message. It feels personal, but the pages Reddit publishes suggest the cause may be a setting that looks at the account and not at what you wrote.

An honest warning first. The two official Reddit pages on this topic are written for moderators, not for users. They explain how the tools work. They do not give a form or a button for users to clear a score. So this guide separates what the moderator pages say from the steps Reddit gives users on its own user help pages. One careless step, such as opening a new account to dodge a filter, can cost you the account you have, so know what you are doing before you start.

## What Is the Reputation Filter?

Reddit's [Reputation filter](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/27441485903124-Reputation-filter) page says it is an optional community safety setting that lets moderators automatically filter content by users who may be potential spammers, are likely to have content removed or have unestablished accounts. It says the filter is informed by the Contributor Quality Score, which uses karma, verification and other account signals to classify user behaviour.

The page makes several points that explain why a post can vanish.

- Moderators turn it on for their own community, and they need Manage Settings permissions to adjust it.
- It does not filter based on the post content but on the user behaviour of the account posting.
- Moderators can choose between two thresholds. High filtering means more content is filtered, and Moderate filtering means less is filtered.
- Anyone a moderator has added as an approved user is not caught by this filter.
- Content that is filtered appears in the mod queue with information about the user.

The page also answers why Reddit does not just remove such content. It says Reddit removes content that violates the Reddit Rules, but that moderators control what other content is and is not allowed in their community. The pages do not say exactly what wording a user sees when this happens, so we cannot confirm that any notice you see came from this filter.

## What Is the Contributor Quality Score?

Reddit's [What is the Contributor Quality Score?](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/19023371170196-What-is-the-Contributor-Quality-Score) page says it is a user classification established to identify potential spammers or users less likely to contribute positively on Reddit. It says every account is assigned a score based on a host of signals. It lists examples: past actions taken on an account, network and location signals, and steps a user has taken to secure their account, such as email verification.

The page says scores place users into one of five tiers: Highest, High, Moderate, Low and Lowest. It says scores are updated regularly and that users can move up or down tiers based on their activity or behaviour. It also says moderators can use the score in their automod rules.

Both pages showed an Updated 19 days ago label when we read them on 25 October 2026, so check the live pages. Neither gives exact thresholds or the weight of each signal, and neither says that users can see their own tier. We do not claim to know yours.

## What Do Reddit's User Help Pages Say?

Reddit's [Why can't I see my post?](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/360045989712-Why-can-t-I-see-my-post) page is written for users. It lists things to check when a post does not show. Sort the community by new, because most communities sort by hot by default. Double-check the community rules, since a moderator may have removed a post that broke a rule. And see if you have community karma.

On karma, the page says that to prevent spammers there is a limit to how often users can post and comment in a community. It says that if you are brand new to Reddit and do not have a lot of karma yet, you may be hitting this spam filter, and that the same can apply if you are new to a community that is especially sensitive to spammers. It says that if you think a spam filter removed your post, even earning a small amount of karma by commenting on another post within the community can help you get past the filter.

Take that as Reddit's own wording. It describes comments that are real and relevant to the community. It does not describe spreading low effort comments to raise a number, and doing that could create a new problem.

## How Do I Message the Moderators?

The same page says that if you think a moderator removed your post by accident or unfairly, you can send a mod mail message. Reddit's [How do I contact the moderators of a community?](https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/360043043792-How-do-I-contact-the-moderators-of-a-community) page says to use mod mail and not a direct chat message. It gives these steps.

1. On reddit.com, click the Message the mods link under the moderators section of the community sidebar.
2. On iOS or Android, open the community, tap the overflow menu at the top right and tap Message moderators.
3. Describe the issue clearly and briefly, be respectful and give the details they need.

The page says you may not get a response right away and that, depending on the community's size, it can take a while. It says replies appear in your chat inbox labelled MOD. It also points to r/help for questions the page does not cover. Whether a moderator approves a held post is their decision, and nothing in the pages we read says they will.

## What Can I Change and What Can I Not?

You cannot edit a score. The pages give no control for it. What the CQS page does list are signals that include account security steps such as email verification, so confirming your email and keeping the account secure is a sensible, plain step. Reddit does not say how much weight any signal carries, so do not expect one action to change a tier.

Posting honestly and following each community's rules also matters, because the pages say scores move with activity and behaviour. If a community removes your posts because of its rules, read the sidebar and adjust.

## Do Not Use a New Account or Location Tricks

The CQS page lists network and location signals. The pages we read do not suggest changing them, and we do not either. Using a VPN to look like you are somewhere else, or opening a second account to post around a filter, are not steps Reddit describes. They could make an account look more like the spam the tools aim to catch, and they put the account you already have at risk.

If your problem is the account itself, such as a suspension or a shadowban, that is a different issue from a filtered post. Our guide to a [suspended Reddit account or shadowban](https://www.awarexone.com/research/reddit-account-suspended-shadowban) covers it. If you cannot log in, see our guide to a [hacked or locked Reddit account](https://www.awarexone.com/research/reddit-account-hacked-or-locked).

## What the Pages Do Not Say

The pages we read do not give a way for a user to appeal the filter itself. They do not publish exact criteria, they do not say how long a held post waits and they do not promise that moderators will approve it. The moderator pages describe tools, and the user pages describe checks. We do not claim to know why your post was held.

## When It Is Safer to Get Expert Help

A filtered post can be a small matter, and the official steps stay first. The risks are real, though. The pages tie the filter to account signals, and Reddit says nothing that would let anyone promise to fix a score. A second account or a location trick could put your main account at risk. People who offer to raise your score for payment, or ask for your password, are not using a route Reddit describes. Our guide to [spotting fake recovery services](https://www.awarexone.com/research/account-recovery-scams-how-to-spot-fake-recovery-services) lists the signs.

If you are unsure about any step, or the account matters for your income or business, handing the case to an experienced team such as AwareXone is the safer choice. We can help you read the notices, choose the right route and write a clear message to the moderators. See our [social media recovery help](https://www.awarexone.com/all-types-of-social-media-problem-solutions) page, and use the Apply for Case Review button at the end of this guide.

## When a Case Review Makes Sense

If posts are held on several communities, the account also shows a suspension notice, or you run a brand or community on Reddit, a review can help you decide what to do first. SocialSafe by AwareXone is a Malaysia-based service, independent of Reddit, that helps you use the official routes. We never ask for your password or login codes, and we cannot change Reddit's decisions. See how we work on our [trust page](https://www.awarexone.com/trust).

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What does removed by Reddit's filters mean?

Reddit's pages do not define that notice. They describe the reputation filter, a moderator setting that holds content from accounts that may be spammers or new, based on user behaviour and not post content.

### What is a Contributor Quality Score?

Reddit says it is a classification of every account into five tiers, built from signals such as past actions, network and location signals and account security steps.

### Can I see or appeal my Contributor Quality Score?

The pages we read give users no way to see, edit or appeal it. They are written for moderators and give no user steps for it.

### What does Reddit tell users to check?

Reddit's user help says to sort by new, check the community rules and see whether you have community karma, then send mod mail if you think a removal was wrong.

### Will a new account or a VPN fix it?

Reddit's pages do not describe either as a fix. They could put your existing account at risk, so we advise against both.

### Can AwareXone change my score or approve my post?

No. No outside service can override Reddit. AwareXone can help you read the notices and plan a clear message without asking for your password.
