## Short answer

If others see "user not found" on your Instagram profile, you may have blocked them, your account may be temporarily deactivated, disabled or under review, or it's a glitch. Log in and check Account Status and any email from Instagram. If only some people can't find you, a block is likely.

## Summary

- Check whether you can still log in normally.
- Ask several people to search for you.
- Check Account Status and email.
- A block on one person isn't a ban.

"User not found" can mean several things. Here's how to tell.

Last checked: 29 October 2026 against the sources listed at the end of this guide.

## What does it mean?

| Situation | What you notice |
| --- | --- |
| You blocked them, or they blocked you | Only some people can't see you |
| Account temporarily deactivated | Everyone sees 'user not found' |
| Account disabled | You see a disable notice |
| Account under review | Limited access, notice in app |
| Glitch | May clear on its own |

Instagram's About disabled Instagram accounts page says that if you think your account was disabled by mistake, you may be able to ask for a review by logging in and following the on-screen instructions. If the account was disabled, you'll see a message when you try to log in. If you don't see that message, Instagram says you may have a login problem, someone may have got into the account, or the account may have been deleted, and a deleted account can't be restored. Once an account is disabled, it is no longer visible to others.

Instagram's What happens when you block someone page says people aren't notified when you block them. After a block, the blocked person's likes and comments are removed from your posts and aren't restored if you unblock them, they can't mention or tag you, and messages they send in Direct aren't received or delivered later. Your old chat stays in your inbox, but you can't message them. In a shared group chat, you can choose to stay or leave.

## What should I do?

1. Log in and look for any notice.
2. Check Account Status.
3. Ask a friend to search your exact username.
4. Check you haven't changed your username.
5. If disabled, read the notice before appealing.

If you can still log in, open Account Status. Instagram's Check your Account Status on Instagram page says it is in Settings, under More info and support. There you can see removed content that may lead to your account being taken down, see features you can no longer use, and request a review if you think Instagram got it wrong. Instagram says that in most cases you'll get a warning before losing access to your account.

Instagram's Review recent emails page says you can see official Instagram emails sent in the last 14 days from Settings: open Meta Account (or Accounts Center), then Login and security, then Recent emails. Security and login emails are listed under Security. Instagram says official security messages are only sent to your email address, from @support.facebook.com, @support.instagram.com, @facebookmail.com, @mail.instagram.com or @global.metamail.com, and that Instagram will never contact you about profile security through Direct Messages.

Instagram's Report a technical problem page says you can shake your phone in the app and tap Report a problem, or go to your profile, tap Menu, then under More info and support tap Help and Report a Problem. Include your phone model, what you were doing when it happened, and a screenshot.

## What common mistakes should I avoid?

- Assuming a shadowban.
- Creating a new account straight away.
- Ignoring a possible hack.
- Appealing without reading the notice.

If you think someone else got in and posted the content, Instagram's If you think your Instagram profile has been hacked page lists the recovery steps. If you got an email from security@mail.instagram.com saying your email was changed, you may be able to undo it with the secure my account option in that message. You can also request a login link from the login screen with Forgot password, and if that fails, request a security code or support from a mobile device.

## How do I keep the account safe while I sort this out?

- Never share a login code, password or backup code with anyone, including people who say they work for Meta, the police or a recovery service.
- Make sure the email address and phone number on the account are ones you still control, and remove any you do not recognise.
- Turn on two-factor authentication where the platform offers it, ideally with an authenticator app, and keep your backup codes somewhere offline.
- Log in only from the official app or by typing the address yourself, not from links in messages, comments or ads.
- Keep screenshots of every notice, email and step you take, with dates, in case you need them for a review or a report.
- Make one careful attempt at each official step rather than many rushed ones, because repeated failed attempts can trigger extra checks.

## When It Is Safer to Get Expert Help

Ask for help before you appeal if the account matters to your income, your business or your memories, if you have already had one appeal rejected, or if you cannot tell whether the problem is a bug, a restriction or a hack. That is where most avoidable losses happen.

### Did my username change?

Check your profile and Recent emails in Settings. Instagram sends security and account emails from addresses like @mail.instagram.com, so a username change you didn't make may show up there.

### Is it a shadowban?

Not usually. Reach limits show in Account Status as content that can't be recommended. User not found usually means the profile can't be seen at all, which points to a block, a disable or a deleted account.

### Can a hacker cause this?

Yes. Someone who gets in can change the username or delete the account. Instagram's About disabled accounts page says a deleted account can't be restored, so act quickly.

### How long do glitches last?

Instagram does not publish a time; they may clear on their own.

### Can AwareXone check my case before I appeal?

Yes. AwareXone offers a free case review. Send us what you see on screen and what you have already tried, and an expert will tell you whether to appeal, wait or take another route. We never ask for your password or codes.
