## Short answer

If Instagram fails for many people at once, across devices, with a generic error or a feed that won't load, it's probably an outage. Wait, and don't reset your password, reinstall or appeal. If you see a specific message such as disabled, suspended or locked, it's your account, so check Account Status.

## Summary

- The 8 October 2026 outage was brief and widely reported.
- Outages hit many users at once, across devices.
- Account problems show specific messages, such as disabled or locked.
- Don't reset passwords or appeal during an outage.
- Check Account Status once the app works.

When Instagram stops working, many people fear they've been banned. Here's how to tell in a minute.

Meta's Status and outages page at metastatus.com lists business products, including Facebook Ads Manager, Instagram Boost, Meta Business Suite, Facebook Login, the Graph API and the Messenger API for Instagram, with a note for each such as No known issues. It doesn't cover every part of the Instagram app, but a problem listed there points to Meta's side rather than your account.

If you can still log in, open Account Status. Instagram's Check your Account Status on Instagram page says it is in Settings, under More info and support. There you can see removed content that may lead to your account being taken down, see features you can no longer use, and request a review if you think Instagram got it wrong. Instagram says that in most cases you'll get a warning before losing access to your account.

## What should I do during an outage?

- Wait, and check whether others report it.
- Don't reset your password repeatedly.
- Don't reinstall the app or log out.
- Don't submit appeals.

Instagram's Troubleshooting page says to make sure you're on the latest version of the app and of your phone's operating system, then restart your phone, try both Wi-Fi and mobile data to rule out a weak connection, and if that doesn't help, delete and reinstall the app. Instagram says your photos and profile info are saved when you remove the app. If it still doesn't work, it could be a bug or broken feature, or a feature that isn't available to everyone yet.

## What if it's still broken after the outage?

Check Account Status and your email from Instagram. A specific message means an account issue.

Instagram's Report a technical problem page says you can shake your phone in the app and tap Report a problem, or go to your profile, tap Menu, then under More info and support tap Help and Report a Problem. Include your phone model, what you were doing when it happened, and a screenshot.

Instagram's About disabled Instagram accounts page says that if you think your account was disabled by mistake, you may be able to ask for a review by logging in and following the on-screen instructions. If the account was disabled, you'll see a message when you try to log in. If you don't see that message, Instagram says you may have a login problem, someone may have got into the account, or the account may have been deleted, and a deleted account can't be restored. Once an account is disabled, it is no longer visible to others.

## What common mistakes should I avoid?

- Resetting your password during an outage.
- Logging out and reinstalling.
- Submitting an appeal before checking.
- Clicking 'Instagram is down' links that ask you to log in.

Instagram's I Can't Log In page is the starting point if you're locked out. It links to steps to recover your password, fix reset emails that don't arrive or links that don't work, handle an email that was changed without you, and confirm your identity with an ID or video selfie if Instagram asks. Instagram says you can open the page in a desktop or mobile browser to try to recover your account.

Instagram's View your recent login activity page says you can see devices that recently logged into your account in Settings, under Password and security, then Where you're logged in. Choose your account, then Select devices to log out, pick the devices and tap Log out. In the older Login Activity view, tap This Wasn't Me on any login you don't recognise and follow the steps to reset your password and secure the account.

## How do I keep the account safe while I sort this out?

- Never share a login code, password or backup code with anyone, including people who say they work for Meta, the police or a recovery service.
- Make sure the email address and phone number on the account are ones you still control, and remove any you do not recognise.
- Turn on two-factor authentication where the platform offers it, ideally with an authenticator app, and keep your backup codes somewhere offline.
- Log in only from the official app or by typing the address yourself, not from links in messages, comments or ads.
- Keep screenshots of every notice, email and step you take, with dates, in case you need them for a review or a report.
- Make one careful attempt at each official step rather than many rushed ones, because repeated failed attempts can trigger extra checks.

## When It Is Safer to Get Expert Help

Ask for help before you appeal if the account matters to your income, your business or your memories, if you have already had one appeal rejected, or if you cannot tell whether the problem is a bug, a restriction or a hack. That is where most avoidable losses happen.
