## Short answer

The link has usually expired, been replaced by a newer email, or been opened with the log in option. Request one fresh link, open only the newest message, and choose reset your Instagram password. If it still fails, tap Can't reset your password on the login screen, then use instagram.com/hacked in a browser. Never forward a link or code.

## Summary

- A login link that arrives but will not work has usually expired, been replaced by a newer email, or been opened with the log in option instead of reset.
- Request one fresh link, open only the newest message, and choose the option to reset your Instagram password rather than logging in from the email.
- If the link still fails, use Can't reset your password on the login screen, then the secure account page at instagram.com/hacked in a browser.
- Fake login link and password reset emails are a common phishing trick, so check the Recent emails list inside Instagram before you tap anything.
- Never forward a link or code to anyone who offers help, and remember that only Instagram decides whether a locked account comes back.

You tapped "Forgot password?", then "Send login link", and the email or text did arrive. But when you tap the link, nothing useful happens. It says the link is no longer valid, or it drops you back on the Instagram login page, or the new password you set does not work.

In most cases the link is simply stale or was opened the wrong way. Request one new link, use only the newest message, and pick the reset option inside it. If that still loops, Instagram has a second route for people whose reset is not working, and a secure account page for everything else.

This guide covers links that arrive but fail. If nothing arrives at all, our guide to [a missing Instagram security code or reset email](https://www.awarexone.com/research/instagram-security-code-not-received) deals with spam folders, wrong addresses and Malaysia's block on text messages that carry links.

## Why Is My Instagram Login Link Not Working?

Instagram's page on [reset links that aren't working](https://help.instagram.com/158807987592157) gives two reasons and one fix: the previous email may have expired, so request a new one, and make sure you select "reset your Instagram password" in the email, because Instagram says not to choose to log in from it. If a fresh link still fails, tap "Can't reset your password?" on the login screen, or open [Instagram's secure account page](https://www.instagram.com/hacked/) in a browser. If you suspect a hack, treat it as one. Nobody outside Meta, including AwareXone, can make a link work for you.

## What the Screen Is Telling You

Instagram does not publish a list of error messages for broken links, and the wording you see varies by app version, language and region. Match your situation on what happens rather than the exact words.

*Instagram login and reset link problems and the first step for each, based on Instagram Help Center pages read on 29 September 2026.*

| What happens when you tap the link | What it usually means | What to do |
| --- | --- | --- |
| A message that the link is invalid, expired or already used | You opened an older email, or requested several links and an earlier one has been replaced | Request one new link, wait for it, and open only that newest message |
| You land on the normal Instagram login page again | You may have picked the log in option in the email, or the link opened somewhere that could not finish the step | Open the newest email and select "reset your Instagram password" |
| You set a new password, but logging in still fails | The reset went to a different profile, or something else on the account has changed | Check which username the email names; try your other emails, numbers and usernames |
| The email names a username you do not recognise | The account you want was registered with a different email address | Start again with other details you may have used for that account |
| A new link fails the same way two or three times | The standard reset is not going to work for this account right now | Tap "Can't reset your password?", then use instagram.com/hacked in a browser |
| You never asked for the link, or it came from an odd address | Someone typed your details by mistake, or it is phishing | Do not tap it; check Recent emails inside Instagram first |

## Fix One: Get a Fresh Link and Open It Properly

This clears most broken links. Instagram's page on [recovering your password](https://help.instagram.com/409847499070242) describes the flow: tap "Forgot password?", enter your username, email or phone, tap "Send login link", then follow the on-screen steps. The link goes to either your email or your phone.

1. Stop tapping old links. Each new request can make the earlier email useless, so a link from an hour ago may never work again.
2. Request one new link from the Instagram app or instagram.com, which you open yourself rather than through a message.
3. Wait a few minutes. Do not request another while you wait, or you will be back to guessing which email is current.
4. Open the newest email and check the sender. Instagram's page on [unrequested reset emails](https://help.instagram.com/231141655544451) says its emails only come from @mail.instagram.com.
5. Inside the email, choose "reset your Instagram password". Do not choose the option to log in from the email.
6. Set a new password you have never used anywhere else, then log in with it.

> Note: **If the link keeps opening the wrong place.** Instagram does not document this, but some email apps open links in their own built-in browser. If the reset page will not load or finish there, request a fresh link and open the newest email in your phone's main browser or on a computer. Never paste the link into a chat or send it to anyone to open for you.

## Fix Two: Check the Reset Reached the Right Account

A link can work perfectly and still reset the wrong profile. Instagram's page on [reset emails for the wrong profile](https://help.instagram.com/228124510648475) says this usually means the account you want was registered with a different email, and suggests trying any other emails, phone numbers or usernames you have used before.

- Read the username in the email before you tap. If it is not the account you want, stop there.
- Try the username itself on the "Forgot password?" screen, rather than an email address.
- Think back to sign-up: an old Yahoo, Hotmail or school address, or a phone number from years ago.
- If Instagram and Facebook are linked, Instagram's page on [reset emails that don't arrive](https://help.instagram.com/407128569340564) says you can reset through Facebook verification instead.

If the email address on the account is one you can no longer open, the problem is the inbox, not the link. Instagram's page on [lost access to your email or phone](https://help.instagram.com/358911864194456) says to recover the inbox through your email provider first, and adds that Instagram cannot help you get back into an email account. It also says that if you cannot access the registered email and did not link Instagram to Facebook, Instagram is unable to give you access. Our guide to [getting back in after losing your email, phone or 2FA](https://www.awarexone.com/research/lost-email-phone-2fa-account-recovery) covers that route.

## Fix Three: When the Reset Still Loops

If two or three fresh links all fail, stop requesting more and move to the next route. Instagram's [I can't log in hub](https://help.instagram.com/374546259294234) groups the options: password reset problems, lost email or phone, a suspected hack, identity checks and disabled accounts. Its page on [hacked profiles](https://help.instagram.com/149494825257596/?cms_platform=iphone-app) sets out the steps below for the iPhone app; labels may differ slightly on Android or in a browser.

1. On the login screen, tap "Forgot password?" and enter the username, email or phone you most recently used.
2. Tap "Can't reset your password?", choose your email or phone, and tap "Send security code" for a code instead of a link.
3. If no code reaches you either, tap "I can't access this email or phone number" and follow the on-screen steps.
4. When asked for a contact address, enter a secure email that only you can access. Instagram says it sends next steps there.
5. If you still cannot get in, open [instagram.com/hacked](https://www.instagram.com/hacked/) in a desktop or mobile browser and follow the steps shown.

Depending on the account, Instagram may then ask you to confirm your identity. Its hacked account page says that for an account without photos of you, it may ask for the email or phone you signed up with and the type of device you used at sign-up. For an account with photos of you, it may ask for a video selfie turning your head in different directions, which it says is never shown on Instagram and is deleted within 30 days.

## Is It a Broken Link or a Hacked Account?

Sometimes the link fails because someone else has changed the account. Look for an email from security@mail.instagram.com saying your email address was changed. Instagram says you may be able to undo that change by selecting "secure my account" in that message. If the password or other details were also changed, request a login link or security code instead, using the route above.

Other signs of a takeover: a new email or phone you do not recognise on the reset screen, posts or messages you did not send, or a password that stopped working without you changing it. If the attacker has already swapped both the email and the phone number, our guide to [an Instagram account hacked with the email and phone changed](https://www.awarexone.com/research/instagram-hacked-email-phone-changed) walks through that situation.

## Is That Login Link Email Even Real?

Fake "login link", "reset your password" and "unusual login" emails are one of the oldest phishing tricks aimed at Instagram users. A convincing copy takes you to a fake login page, and whatever you type goes to the attacker. Before you tap any link, check it inside Instagram itself.

- Open Instagram yourself and go to Settings, then Accounts Centre, then Password and security, then "Recent emails". Instagram's page on [reviewing recent emails](https://www.facebook.com/help/instagram/760602221058803/?locale=en_GB) says this lists official emails from the last 14 days, with security and login emails under "Security".
- If the email you received is not in that list, treat it as fake and do not tap the link.
- Check the sender. Instagram names @mail.instagram.com, @support.instagram.com, @support.facebook.com, @facebookmail.com and @global.metamail.com as the addresses it uses for account security messages.
- Ignore any Direct Message about your login. Instagram says it will never contact you about account security through Direct Messages.
- Never open a login link that someone else forwarded to you, even a friend. A link meant for your account should only come from Instagram to your own inbox or phone.

Instagram's own page on [avoiding scams](https://www.facebook.com/help/instagram/514187739359208) lists the pressure signs: a message saying something is urgently wrong with your account, or one asking you to log in to read an important notice. Malaysian versions arrive in English, Bahasa Malaysia or Chinese, for example a message claiming "Akaun Instagram anda akan dipadam dalam masa 24 jam" unless you tap a link. An unexpected reset email on its own is not proof of a hack: Instagram says someone may have entered your details by mistake, and only people who know your password or tap the login link can log in.

If you already tapped a fake link and typed your password, change it straight away from the real app and read our steps for [what to do after clicking a phishing link](https://www.awarexone.com/research/clicked-phishing-link-what-to-do).

## Mistakes That Make a Broken Link Harder to Fix

- Requesting link after link, then opening an older one that has already been replaced.
- Choosing the log in option in the email instead of "reset your Instagram password".
- Resetting the password on a different profile without noticing the username in the email.
- Tapping a reset link from a message you did not ask for, without checking Recent emails first.
- Forwarding the link or a security code to a friend, a "Meta support" page or a paid helper.
- Following forum tricks or unofficial tools that promise to fix links. They do not come from Instagram and can put the account at more risk.
- Giving up after the link fails, when "Can't reset your password?" and the secure account page are still open to you.

> Warning: **Nobody legitimate needs your link or code.** A login link or security code works for whoever opens it. Instagram, Meta and any honest helper can do their part without your password, login link, security code or backup codes, and that includes us. Do not pay people who promise to unlock an account for a fee; they have no access that you do not.

## If You Lost Money or Shared a Code in Malaysia

If a fake login page or a scammer also got your banking details or money, deal with that first. The government's [NSRC 997 page](https://www.malaysia.gov.my/en/categories/safety-and-community/cybersecurity/nsrc-997-hotline) asks victims to call 997 within 24 hours of discovering the scam so bank accounts and transactions can be blocked, and tells you to contact your bank and make a police report at the nearest station.

The phishing email or fake login page itself can be reported to CyberSecurity Malaysia's [Cyber999 incident response centre](https://www.cybersecurity.my/portal-main/services/cyber999-overview) through its online form, email, phone or mobile app. It asks for details such as the email header and the time of the attack, so keep the suspicious email rather than deleting it.

## When a Case Review Makes Sense

Most broken login links are fixed with a fresh request and the right option in the email, and the next routes are free and open to everyone. A review is worth it when the account was taken over and the details are no longer yours, when identity checks keep failing, or when the account runs your business and a wrong step would cost you.

SocialSafe by AwareXone, our recovery service, reviews where you are stuck and what you have already tried, then tells you plainly whether an official route is still open. We use the same Instagram processes you can use, and we never ask for a login link, code or password. Our [Instagram account recovery service](https://www.awarexone.com/social-media-recovery/instagram-account-recovery) explains the review, and our [Trust Center](https://www.awarexone.com/trust) sets out how we work. Instagram makes the final decision, and some accounts are not recovered.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### How long does an Instagram login link last?

Instagram does not publish an expiry time. It says an earlier reset email may have expired, so if a link fails, request a new one and use only the newest message.

### Why does my Instagram reset link take me back to the login page?

Often the log in option in the email was chosen instead of the reset option. Open the newest email and select "reset your Instagram password", as Instagram advises.

### I reset my password but still can't log in. Why?

The reset may have gone to a different profile registered with that email, so check the username the email names. If the details on the account were changed by someone else, follow Instagram's hacked account steps instead.

### Can I use a login link someone else sent me?

No. A genuine link only comes from Instagram to the email or phone on your own account. A link forwarded by a stranger or a "support agent" is a common way to steal accounts.

### Can AwareXone send me a working Instagram login link?

No. Only Instagram sends login links and codes. SocialSafe by AwareXone can review your case and help you choose the right official route, without ever asking for your link, code or password.
