## Short answer

When Instagram likes disappear after refreshing and follows undo themselves, Instagram is usually silently limiting actions it sees as too fast or automated, or there's a bug. Stop liking and following for a while and check Account Status for any listed limit. Remove third-party apps.

## Summary

- Silent action limits often cause this.
- Pause likes and follows for a day or two.
- Remove third-party apps and automation.
- Check Account Status.
- Reports suggest it can be a platform bug.

Here's how to tell a limit from a bug.

## Limit or bug?

| Sign | Likely |
| --- | --- |
| Only your account | Action limit |
| Many people report it | Bug |
| After a burst of activity | Action limit |
| Account Status shows a limit | Limit |

Instagram's Troubleshooting page says to make sure you're on the latest version of the app and of your phone's operating system, then restart your phone, try both Wi-Fi and mobile data to rule out a weak connection, and if that doesn't help, delete and reinstall the app. Instagram says your photos and profile info are saved when you remove the app. If it still doesn't work, it could be a bug or broken feature, or a feature that isn't available to everyone yet.

Instagram's Report a technical problem page says you can shake your phone in the app and tap Report a problem, or go to your profile, tap Menu, then under More info and support tap Help and Report a Problem. Include your phone model, what you were doing when it happened, and a screenshot.

## What should I do?

1. Stop liking and following for a while.
2. Remove third-party apps.
3. Change your password if apps had it.
4. Update the app.
5. Try again slowly.

If you can still log in, open Account Status. Instagram's Check your Account Status on Instagram page says it is in Settings, under More info and support. There you can see removed content that may lead to your account being taken down, see features you can no longer use, and request a review if you think Instagram got it wrong. Instagram says that in most cases you'll get a warning before losing access to your account.

Instagram's Recommendations page says it tries not to recommend accounts that repeatedly use misleading practices to build a following, such as buying likes. Apps that like or follow for you can produce the same burst patterns, so disconnect them and slow down.

## What common mistakes should I avoid?

- Repeating likes until they stick.
- Using auto-follow apps.
- Logging in on many devices.
- Appealing a temporary limit.

Instagram's Secure your Instagram account page calls two-factor authentication the single most effective step to protect an account from hackers, because it asks for a code when someone logs in from a device Instagram doesn't recognise. It also recommends a strong, unique password you haven't used elsewhere, avoiding personal details like names and birthdays, and never giving your password to anyone you don't know and trust.

Instagram's page on how it uses artificial intelligence to moderate content says it removes content that goes against the Community Standards, and that content which doesn't break the rules but may be inappropriate can be limited from Explore instead of removed. AI can detect and remove content before anyone reports it, and it sends some content to human review teams, who make the final decision. Instagram says that if it took down content you don't believe goes against the Community Standards, you can request a review.

Meta's Restricting accounts page says that for most violations the first strike is only a warning, and that accounts that keep posting violating content after repeated warnings and restrictions are disabled. For more severe policies, such as dangerous individuals and organisations or adult sexual exploitation, Meta says you may get longer restrictions from the first strike. Meta also says it notifies you when it removes content or adds restrictions, that you can see your violation history and some restrictions in Account Status, and that it sometimes makes mistakes: if you think it got something wrong, you can tell it in the app, and content found to follow the rules is put back.

## How do I keep the account safe while I sort this out?

- Never share a login code, password or backup code with anyone, including people who say they work for Meta, the police or a recovery service.
- Make sure the email address and phone number on the account are ones you still control, and remove any you do not recognise.
- Turn on two-factor authentication where the platform offers it, ideally with an authenticator app, and keep your backup codes somewhere offline.
- Log in only from the official app or by typing the address yourself, not from links in messages, comments or ads.
- Keep screenshots of every notice, email and step you take, with dates, in case you need them for a review or a report.
- Make one careful attempt at each official step rather than many rushed ones, because repeated failed attempts can trigger extra checks.

## When It Is Safer to Get Expert Help

Ask for help before you appeal if the account matters to your income, your business or your memories, if you have already had one appeal rejected, or if you cannot tell whether the problem is a bug, a restriction or a hack. That is where most avoidable losses happen.

### Will this disable my account?

Usually no. Meta's Restricting accounts page says disables follow repeated violations after warnings and restrictions, or a severe violation. Limits on likes and follows are usually temporary.

### How long does it last?

Instagram doesn't publish a fixed time. Check Account Status for any listed features you can't use and when they end.

### Do I need to appeal?

Not usually. If Account Status shows a limit you think is wrong, use Request a review there. If it's a bug, report it from Help, then Report a Problem.

### Is my account hacked?

It might be, if you see logins you don't recognise. Change your password, remove apps you don't trust and turn on two-factor authentication.

### Can AwareXone check my case before I appeal?

Yes. AwareXone offers a free case review. Send us what you see on screen and what you have already tried, and an expert will tell you whether to appeal, wait or take another route. We never ask for your password or codes.
