## Short answer

"Comments on this post are limited" usually means the account owner has limited who can comment, for example to followers or people they follow, or turned on temporary limits against unwanted comments. It isn't a penalty on you. If you can't comment anywhere, check Account Status for a restriction on your own account.

## Summary

- Account owners can limit comments.
- Limits can be set per post or temporarily.
- It doesn't mean you're blocked.
- If you can't comment anywhere, check Account Status.
- Restrict also hides your comments.

This message is common on popular posts. Here's what it means.

## Why are comments limited?

- The owner allows comments only from people they follow, their followers, or both.
- The owner has turned on Limits, which hide interactions from people who don't follow them or only followed recently.
- The post is from an account with teen protections.
- Comments are turned off completely.

> Warning: **One wrong step can cost you the account.** One wrong step can cost you the account, so know what you are doing before you start. If you are not sure, do not submit an appeal yet. Ask AwareXone for a free expert review first, then act.

Instagram's Hide comments or message requests you don’t want to see on Instagram page explains that everyone can comment by default, but the owner can change this in Settings, under Comments, to allow comments only from people they follow, their followers, or both, or turn commenting off. Its Temporarily limit people from interacting with you on Instagram page describes Limits, which hide interactions from people who don't follow the account or only followed it recently. When any of these settings apply, you may see the limited comments message.

Teen accounts have extra protections. Meta's June 2026 newsroom post Strengthening Teen Accounts with New Safety Updates on Instagram and Facebook describes the limits on who can contact and interact with teenagers. If you are an adult and not connected to a teen, you may not be able to comment on their posts at all.

## Is my account restricted?

| Test | Result | Meaning |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Comment on another post | Works | Limit is on that post |
| Comment anywhere | Fails | Check Account Status |
| Your comments vanish | Others don't see them | You may be restricted by that user |

If you cannot comment anywhere, the problem is likely on your account. Instagram's Check your Account Status on Instagram page explains how to see restrictions, strikes and limits. Instagram's Temporary limited access to settings on Instagram page explains that some actions can be limited for a while when activity looks unusual, such as posting many comments quickly.

## Why do my comments vanish without a message?

If you can post a comment but others cannot see it, the account owner may have restricted you. Instagram's Restrict or unrestrict someone on Instagram page explains that when someone restricts you, your new comments on their posts are visible only to you unless they approve them. They may also have hidden words that appear in your comment. Neither is a penalty from Instagram.

## What common mistakes should I avoid?

- Making new accounts to comment.
- Assuming you're banned.
- Spamming other posts to test.
- Messaging the owner repeatedly.

Posting the same comment on many posts to test whether it works can trigger the spam limits Meta's Spam policy describes. If you need to reach a business or creator and comments are limited, use the contact options on their profile, such as email or a website, instead of making new accounts or flooding their posts.

## How do I keep the account safe while I sort this out?

- Never share a login code, password or backup code with anyone, including people who say they work for Meta, the police or a recovery service.
- Make sure the email address and phone number on the account are ones you still control, and remove any you do not recognise.
- Turn on two-factor authentication where the platform offers it, ideally with an authenticator app, and keep your backup codes somewhere offline.
- Log in only from the official app or by typing the address yourself, not from links in messages, comments or ads.
- Keep screenshots of every notice, email and step you take, with dates, in case you need them for a review or a report.
- Make one careful attempt at each official step rather than many rushed ones, because repeated failed attempts can trigger extra checks.

## When It Is Safer to Get Expert Help

Ask for help before you appeal if the account matters to your income, your business or your memories, if you have already had one appeal rejected, or if you cannot tell whether the problem is a bug, a restriction or a hack. That is where most avoidable losses happen.

- You cannot comment anywhere and Account Status shows a restriction.
- Your comments are removed as spam even when they are ordinary.
- You are being targeted by harassment and want to limit comments on your own posts safely.
- A business account's customers cannot comment and you need to check your settings.

### Can I ask to comment?

Only by following the account, if the owner allows comments from followers. You cannot request access to comment, and repeated messages to the owner may lead them to restrict or block you.

### Does this hurt my account?

No. A limit set by another account's owner does not count against you or affect your Account Status.

### Why do my comments disappear?

The owner may have restricted you, hidden words in your comment, or removed it. If it happens on every account, check your own Account Status.

### How long do Limits last?

The account owner chooses how long temporary limits stay on, and can turn them off at any time. There is nothing you need to do.

### How do I limit comments on my own posts?

Open the post, tap the three dots and look for comment controls, or go to Settings and privacy, then Comments. You can choose who can comment, hide words and turn on temporary limits if you get a wave of unwanted comments.

### Is this the same as being shadowbanned?

No. Limited comments is a setting chosen by the account owner. Recommendation limits are separate and can show in Account Status.

### Can AwareXone check my case before I appeal?

Yes. AwareXone offers a free case review. Send us what you see on screen and what you have already tried, and an expert will tell you whether to appeal, wait or take another route. We never ask for your password or codes.
