## Short answer

Google may delete a personal Google Account that has not been used across Google for at least two years. To keep it, sign in and use it, for example by reading an email, using Drive or watching a YouTube video while signed in. Google warns the account and its recovery email first. Work and school accounts are not covered.

## Summary

- Google may delete a personal account that has not been used across Google for at least two years.
- Signing in and doing things like reading email, using Drive or watching YouTube counts as activity.
- Google sends warnings to the account and to its recovery email before deleting it.
- Some accounts count as active anyway, such as those with a current subscription or gift card balance.
- Inactive Account Manager lets you choose up to 10 people to be notified or receive data.

Many people have an old Google Account they rarely open: a first Gmail address, a YouTube login or an account used for one app. Google has a policy that lets it delete personal accounts that have not been used for at least two years. If that account is still the recovery email for something important, losing it can cause real problems. This guide explains what Google counts as activity, who is covered, the exceptions and how to plan ahead.

## What is Google's inactive account policy?

Google defines an inactive account as one that has not been used within a two-year period. It reserves the right to delete an inactive Google Account and its activity and data if you are inactive across Google for at least two years ([Google Account Help](https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/12418290)).

The policy applies to personal Google Accounts. Google says it does not apply to accounts set up for you through work, school or another organisation. Google also says individual products may delete data if you are inactive in that product for at least two years, based on each product's own inactivity policy.

## What counts as activity?

Google says an account in use is considered active. Examples it gives of activity while signed in include:

- Reading or sending an email
- Using Google Drive
- Watching a YouTube video
- Sharing a photo
- Downloading an app
- Using Google Search
- Using Sign in with Google to sign in to a third-party app or service

Google says activity is measured by account, not by device, so you can be active on any surface where you are signed in, such as your phone. If you have more than one Google Account on a device, Google says you should make sure each one is used within the two-year period.

## Will Google warn me first?

Yes. Google says that before an inactive account is deleted, you have the opportunity to act when it sends email notifications to the Google Account itself and to its recovery email, if there is one ([Google Account Help](https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/12418290)). This is a good reason to keep a recovery email on every account and to check it occasionally.

> Warning: **Usernames are not reusable.** Google says that if a Gmail account is deleted, you can no longer access that email and you cannot reuse the Gmail username. Anything that used the address for login or recovery would need updating.

## Which accounts count as active anyway?

Google lists exceptions. An account is considered active even without use in two years if one or more of these applies:

| Exception | Example |
| --- | --- |
| A current or ongoing purchase | A Google product, app, service or subscription that is still active |
| A gift card balance | A Google gift card with money left on it |
| A published app or game with active subscriptions or transactions | An app the account owns on Google Play |
| Managing a minor's account | An active child account managed through Family Link |
| A purchase of a digital item | A book or film bought with the account |

## How do I keep an old Google Account?

1. Sign in to the account. If you cannot remember the password, use Google's account recovery; our [Google recovery form tips](https://www.awarexone.com/research/google-account-recovery-form-tips) may help.
2. Do something that counts as activity, such as reading an email or searching while signed in.
3. Check that the recovery email and phone number are current, so warnings reach you.
4. Set a reminder to repeat this well within two years.

## What is Inactive Account Manager?

Inactive Account Manager lets you plan what happens if you stop using your account. Google says you can choose someone, such as an immediate family member, to receive certain account data or be notified if you have been inactive for a period you set ([Google Account Help](https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/3036546)).

- You can choose up to 10 people, and share all or only specific data types with each.
- Contacts are only notified once your account has been inactive for the time you set, not during setup.
- Google asks for a phone number for a trusted contact, used only to make sure that person is the one who downloads your data.
- You can change your choices or turn the plan off at any time on the Inactive Account Manager page.

Google says it looks at signals such as your last sign-ins, activity in My Activity, Gmail use and Android check-ins to judge whether you are still using your account. If you do not set up a plan, the inactive account policy still applies.

## What about a family member's account?

Google says it can, in many cases, work with immediate family members and representatives to close a deceased person's account where appropriate, and in some circumstances may provide content from it. Our guide on [removing a late relative's old accounts](https://www.awarexone.com/research/remove-dead-relatives-old-accounts) covers that process across platforms.

## Should I download my data first?

If you no longer need an old account but want to keep what is in it, download a copy before you let it go. Google says deleting a Google Account affects every product connected to it, such as Gmail, Blogger and AdSense, and affects each product differently. You can review the data connected to your account on the Google Dashboard before deciding. Downloading first means a deletion, whether by you or under the inactivity policy, does not take your photos, files or emails with it.

## Common mistakes

- Assuming an account is safe because it is still signed in on an old, unused device.
- Leaving an old Gmail address as the recovery email for important accounts without checking it.
- Having no recovery email, so deletion warnings go nowhere you will see.
- Assuming work or school accounts follow this policy, when Google says they do not.

## What are the realistic limits?

Google controls this policy and decides when inactive accounts are deleted. Once a Gmail account is deleted, Google says the username cannot be reused. If your account was disabled for a policy reason rather than inactivity, see [Google account disabled](https://www.awarexone.com/research/google-account-disabled-appeal).
