## Short answer

On Instagram and Facebook, you either subscribe to Meta Verified, paid to Meta directly, or make a free request as a notable person or brand backed by independent news coverage. On TikTok, you apply in the app with credible written press coverage. Nobody outside the platform can sell you a badge, and the platform makes the final decision.

## Summary

- On Instagram and Facebook you either subscribe to Meta Verified, paid to Meta directly, or make a free request as a notable person or brand.
- The free request needs coverage in multiple news sources. Paid or sponsored articles and press releases do not count, and follower numbers do not matter.
- On TikTok you apply in the app under Settings and privacy, Account, then Verification, with credible written news coverage about you.
- A badge shows which account is real, but it does not stop hacking, stop copies appearing or guarantee that support will restore an account.
- Nobody outside the platform can sell you a badge. A seller promising one, or anyone asking for your login or a code to verify you, is a scam warning sign.
- The platform makes the final decision on every request, and a badge can be removed later, so nobody can promise you one.

A home-grown skincare brand posts a launch on Instagram. Within a week, a customer forwards a screenshot: an account with the same logo, one extra underscore in the name, taking orders by bank transfer. The same day, a stranger messages the founder offering a blue tick in 48 hours, no press coverage needed, payment first.

A verified badge would help customers tell the real account from the copy. But the offer in the inbox is not how anyone gets one. Instagram and Facebook give you two legitimate routes: pay Meta directly for a Meta Verified subscription, or apply for free as a notable person or brand. TikTok has one route, an in-app application backed by press coverage. Facebook has also started a free badge that only confirms a real person is behind a profile.

This guide compares every route, explains what each asks for, and is honest about what a badge will and will not do for your account.

## How do you get verified on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok in Malaysia?

On Instagram and Facebook, you either subscribe to Meta Verified or request a badge as a notable public figure, celebrity or brand. Meta Verified is a monthly subscription paid to Meta: you must be at least 18, have a government-issued photo ID, turn on Advanced Protection and meet activity requirements. Check the current price in the app. The notability request is free, but Meta looks for coverage in multiple news sources and ignores paid or sponsored content. On TikTok, you apply in the app under Settings and privacy, then Account, then Verification, and you must provide credible written media coverage. TikTok does not count followers or likes. No outside seller can legitimately get you a badge, and Instagram says trying to verify through a third party can cost you the badge or the account.

## The Three Kinds of Badge You Will See

A verified badge is a mark a platform places next to an account's name after it has checked who is behind it. What the platform checked depends on the kind of badge:

- Notability badge: the platform decided the account is the authentic presence of a well-known person, brand or entity. Instagram, Facebook and TikTok all offer this, free to request.
- Meta Verified badge: Meta confirmed the identity of a paying subscriber, usually against a government photo ID. It looks like the blue notability badge but does not mean the account is famous.
- Facebook Verified badge: a free grey badge on personal Facebook profiles, confirming a real person is behind the profile through a video selfie. Meta announced it in July 2026 and is rolling it out in phases.

None of the three means the platform endorses the account. TikTok's help centre says its badge does not imply endorsement, and Meta says the same about Facebook Verified.

## Instagram, Facebook and TikTok Verification Compared

## Meta Verified: The Subscription Route

Meta Verified is a paid subscription that confirms your identity and adds the badge, enhanced support and impersonation protection. It suits a creator or business that is real and active but not yet covered by the press. Malaysian news reports in July 2023 said Meta Verified had begun rolling out in Malaysia. Plans, benefits and availability still vary by region, app and account, so the sign-up flow is the only reliable place to see what your account can get.

Meta's [eligibility page for creators](https://www.facebook.com/help/596285382333151) says you must:

- Be at least 18, or the age of majority where you live.
- Be located in a country where Meta Verified is available.
- Have a government-issued photo ID. For most Malaysians that is a MyKad or passport.
- Use an Instagram or Facebook personal or creator profile, with a name and profile picture that meet Meta's naming standards.
- Turn on Advanced Protection on each profile you verify. Meta says it cannot be switched off while the subscription is active.
- Meet minimum activity requirements, and not exceed a set number of profile changes (name, picture, username, location) before applying.

You can verify up to two profiles in the same Accounts Centre, one Instagram and one Facebook, and both may need similar names and pictures. You choose a plan, set up the recurring payment and upload photos of your ID. Meta says review can take up to three working days. The price is a monthly subscription that renews automatically; check the current price in the app, because it differs by plan and by whether you sign up on the web or in the app.

Businesses use a separate version. Meta's business help centre says Meta Verified for businesses covers Facebook Pages and Instagram business accounts (and WhatsApp Business in some combinations), requires full control of a Meta Business Suite portfolio, and needs Advanced Protection turned on for everyone with access to that portfolio. Tidy the portfolio first: remove old agency staff and former employees who no longer need access.

## The Free Notability Request on Instagram and Facebook

Meta still accepts free requests from notable people and brands on both apps. Instagram's [verification requirements](https://help.instagram.com/312685272613322) and Facebook's [types of verified badges](https://www.facebook.com/help/1288173394636262) page set out four tests:

- Authentic: the account represents a real person, registered business or entity.
- Unique: only one account per person or business, apart from language-specific accounts. General interest and meme accounts are not verified.
- Complete: public, with a bio or about section, a profile photo and recent activity.
- Notable: a well-known, highly searched-for person, brand or entity, featured in multiple news sources. Paid or sponsored media does not count.

At the time of writing, Instagram's help centre gives this path on iPhone: go to your profile, tap Menu, then Professional dashboard, then Settings, then Request verification. You enter your full name and a government-issued photo ID or official business documents, then follow the on-screen steps. On Facebook, the request goes through the Request a Blue Verification Badge form in the Help Centre, where you choose a category and country and attach ID.

Three rules catch people out. Instagram says you cannot change your username once verified, so settle the handle first; our guide to [claiming a username someone else holds](https://www.awarexone.com/research/claim-taken-username-malaysia) covers that. Applying again before a decision cancels your application. And verifying on Instagram does not verify you on Facebook, so each app needs its own request.

Instagram says you will get a decision in Activity within 30 days. If it is declined, you can apply again after 30 days.

## TikTok Verification: Application Only

TikTok's help centre describes a single, application-based badge and does not describe a paid option. It looks at whether an account is active, authentic, notable and unique, and says it does not consider follower or like counts. Its listed requirements:

- Active: the account has logged in within the past 6 months.
- Authentic: a real person, business or institution, one verification each. Personal verification requires identity verification, business verification requires a Verified Business Account or Organization Account, and institution verification requires official proof of affiliation.
- Complete: public, with a name, bio, profile photo and at least one public post.
- Notable: featured in multiple news sources. Press releases, sponsored or paid media, social media posts and outdated or irrelevant articles do not count.
- Secure: TikTok's longer verification help page also lists 2-step verification with a verified email, so turn it on before you apply.

To apply at the time of writing:

1. Tap Profile, then the Menu button, then Settings and privacy.
2. Tap Account, then Verification, then Start.
3. Pick the verification type your account allows. Business accounts can only apply for business verification; personal accounts can apply for personal or institutional verification.
4. Add credible written media coverage, such as news articles, and submit.

TikTok notifies you of the result through TikTok notifications within 30 days. After a rejection, you can see the reason and resubmit once the waiting period TikTok shows you has passed. TikTok's web verification page now sends applicants back to the in-app route, so the app is the place to apply.

## What Counts as Notable Press Coverage

Notability is the hardest test to meet. All three platforms want evidence that journalists chose to write about you, not that you paid to appear. A practical way to sort your links:

- Strong: features and interviews about you or your brand in established Malaysian or international news outlets, in English, Malay, Chinese or Tamil, written by their own staff.
- Weak: a passing mention in a longer article, or coverage that is mainly about someone else.
- Not counted: press releases, advertorials, articles marked sponsored or partner content, paid listicles, and your own website or blog.
- Not relevant: follower numbers, which TikTok says it does not consider, and links to your other social accounts on their own.

If you do not yet have coverage like this, Meta Verified is the honest route on Instagram and Facebook. Buying articles to manufacture notability wastes money, and TikTok says it can deny or revoke verification obtained through artificial or inauthentic activity.

## What a Badge Does and Does Not Do

A badge tells people which account is the real one. That is useful, especially for a business whose customers keep meeting copies. The limits matter just as much:

- It does not make an account harder to hack. Meta lists creators with large followings and Meta Verified subscribers among accounts at higher risk of phishing, which is why Advanced Protection is required for them.
- It does not guarantee a support outcome. Meta Verified includes enhanced support, but Meta notes some benefits are not yet available in all regions, and support cannot promise that a hacked or disabled account comes back.
- It does not stop copies appearing. Meta says Meta Verified includes proactive impersonation monitoring and removes accounts it determines are pretending to be you. Notability badges carry no such promise, and you will still need to report fakes yourself.
- It does not carry across apps or accounts. An Instagram badge does not verify Facebook, and Instagram says verification cannot be transferred to a different account.
- It can be taken away. Instagram can remove a badge at any time, including for false information or switching between public and private too often.

Treat the badge as a label, not a lock. Our [social media security guide for Malaysia](https://www.awarexone.com/research/social-media-security-malaysia) and the [two-factor authentication guide](https://www.awarexone.com/research/two-factor-authentication-instagram-facebook-tiktok) cover the settings that actually keep an account in your hands. ## Blue Tick Sellers and Verification Scams

Anyone selling a badge, or promising verification regardless of whether you meet the rules, is a red flag. Instagram's help centre says it may remove your badge or disable your account if you advertise, transfer or sell a badge, or attempt to verify your account through a third party. TikTok says it does not contact people by email or direct message to invite a verification application, apart from government and political accounts.

The offers usually take one of these forms:

- Pay first, then silence. The seller takes a bank transfer or e-wallet payment and disappears.
- "Let us apply for you". They ask for your login, a code sent to your phone, or for you to forward a link. The goal is the account itself.
- Fake Meta or TikTok staff. A message claims your account has been selected for verification, or will lose its badge unless you act, and links to a lookalike form.
- Paid articles. They place sponsored pieces on low-quality sites and call it notability, which the platforms say they do not count.

> Warning: **Nobody needs your login to verify you.** Every legitimate route runs inside the app or an official help centre form, completed by you. If anyone asks for your password, a login code, a backup code or to be added to your account "for verification", stop and block them. Our guide to [fake Meta support scams in Malaysia](https://www.awarexone.com/research/fake-meta-support-scam-malaysia) shows the common versions.

If you already paid a badge seller, call your bank's hotline or the National Scam Response Centre on 997 immediately, then make a police report. If you shared a code or login, secure your email first, then change the account password and log out of other sessions.

## Before You Apply: A Checklist

- Choose the route: notability if independent press already covers you, Meta Verified if it does not, and TikTok's application only with written news coverage.
- Settle the username you want to keep before a Meta request.
- Make the profile public and complete: bio, clear profile photo, recent posts.
- Check that the name on your ID or business documents matches the account name. Our guide to [proving you own a social media account](https://www.awarexone.com/research/prove-social-media-account-ownership) covers which documents help.
- Turn on two-factor authentication, and Advanced Protection if you are subscribing to Meta Verified.
- For TikTok business verification, check that the account has Verified Business Account or Organization Account status first.
- For Meta Verified for businesses, review who has access to your business portfolio.
- Collect working links to independent articles about you, and remove anything paid or sponsored from the list.
- Apply once, then wait for the decision. Resubmitting early cancels or delays it.
- Link your accounts from your official website so people can check which profiles are yours, badge or not.

## Where AwareXone Fits

SocialSafe by AwareXone, our social media and digital identity service, helps with the honest part of verification: whether a notability request is realistic, which evidence is worth submitting, and whether your account settings are ready. We work through the same official forms and subscriptions described above. We do not sell badges and cannot promise one, because the platform makes the final decision. Our [verification support](https://www.awarexone.com/social-media-verification) page explains how that works, and [digital identity protection](https://www.awarexone.com/digital-identity-protection) covers the impersonation problem that often comes first.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Is Meta Verified available in Malaysia?

Malaysian news reports in July 2023 said Meta Verified had begun rolling out in Malaysia. Meta says plans, benefits and availability vary by region, app and account, so the reliable check is to open Meta Verified in Accounts Centre or Meta Account settings on the profile you want to verify. If the option is missing, the account may not yet meet the eligibility requirements, such as Advanced Protection or minimum activity.

### How much does Meta Verified cost?

It is a monthly subscription that renews automatically until you cancel. Meta offers several plans, and the price differs by plan and by whether you subscribe on the web or in the app. Prices change, so check the current price in the app during sign-up rather than relying on a figure you read elsewhere, including in older news reports.

### Can I still get a free blue tick on Instagram or Facebook?

Yes, if you are notable. Meta still accepts free requests from public figures, celebrities and brands on Instagram and Facebook. The account must be authentic, unique, complete and featured in multiple news sources, and paid or sponsored media does not count. Many small businesses and new creators will not meet the notability test, which is why Meta Verified exists as a separate route.

### How many followers do I need to get verified?

There is no follower threshold. TikTok says it does not consider follower or like counts when granting a badge. Meta's notability tests are about being well known and featured in multiple news sources, not audience size. Meta Verified has minimum activity requirements, but these are about account history rather than a follower number. A large following without press coverage will not earn a notability badge.

### Can I pay someone to get my account verified?

Not legitimately. You can pay Meta itself for Meta Verified, but no outside person or agency can sell you a badge. Instagram says attempting to verify through a third party, or selling or transferring a badge, can lead to the badge being removed and the account disabled. Offers like this are commonly a route to stealing money, the account, or both.

### Does a verified badge stop my account from being hacked?

No. A badge confirms who is behind an account; it does not change how the account is protected. Meta treats creators with large followings and Meta Verified subscribers as higher-risk targets for phishing, which is why it requires Advanced Protection for subscribers. Two-factor authentication, a secured email address and caution with messages claiming to be platform staff do the protective work.

### Will Meta Verified get my hacked or disabled account back?

It may give you a better support channel, but it cannot promise an outcome. Meta Verified includes enhanced support, and Meta notes that some benefits are not available in every region. Support staff still follow Meta's recovery and review processes, and Meta makes the final decision on whether an account is restored. Having a subscription does not override a policy decision.

### Does Meta Verified remove fake accounts pretending to be me?

Meta says Meta Verified includes proactive impersonation monitoring and that it removes accounts it determines are pretending to be you. That is Meta's decision, and it will not catch every copy. Keep reporting fake accounts yourself, and save evidence first: the URL, username, screenshots and dates. Notability badges do not come with this monitoring benefit.

### How do I get verified on TikTok?

Open the TikTok app, tap Profile, the Menu button, Settings and privacy, Account, then Verification, and follow the steps. You need an active, public, complete account with at least one post and credible written news coverage. Personal verification involves identity verification, and business verification needs a Verified Business Account or Organization Account. Turn on 2-step verification first. TikTok replies through notifications within 30 days.

### Why was my verification request rejected?

Usually because the platform did not find enough independent news coverage, the profile was incomplete or private, or the name did not match the documents. For TikTok, a business account without Verified Business Account or Organization Account status does not meet the business verification requirement. Instagram lets you apply again after 30 days, and TikTok shows the reason and a waiting period before you can resubmit, so use the time to strengthen the evidence rather than resubmitting the same links.
