## Short answer

If you forget your Messenger PIN, you can reset it, and Meta's help page explains how. Meta can't see or recover your PIN. Check devices where you're still logged in and any saved recovery code first, because resetting can mean losing older encrypted history on a new device. Your Facebook account isn't affected.

## Summary

- Meta can't see or recover your PIN.
- Resetting the PIN can mean losing old encrypted history.
- Devices still logged in may keep your chats.
- Saving a recovery code or using device backup helps.
- Your Facebook account isn't affected.

Encrypted chat backups use a PIN Meta doesn't know. Here's what that means if you forget it.

## What can I do?

1. Try any PIN you may have used.
2. Check other devices where you're still logged in.
3. Check for a saved recovery code.
4. If nothing works, reset the PIN in Messenger's end-to-end encrypted chats settings.

Messenger's end-to-end encrypted chats are protected so that only the people in the chat can read them. To let you see your chat history on a new phone or computer, Messenger keeps a secure backup that you unlock with a PIN or a recovery code. Facebook's help page Restore end-to-end encrypted chats with a PIN on Messenger explains how the PIN is used to restore that history. Because the backup is encrypted, Meta does not hold the PIN for you.

## Where should I look before resetting?

- Any phone, tablet or computer where you are still logged in to Messenger. Chats there are usually still readable.
- Your password manager, notes app or a photo you may have taken when setting the PIN.
- A saved recovery code. Some people chose a recovery code instead of a PIN, or saved one as well.

If your chats are visible on another logged-in device, do not reset the PIN there in a hurry. Use that device to screenshot or note anything important first.

## What will I lose?

| Item | After resetting |
| --- | --- |
| New messages | Work normally |
| Older encrypted history on a new device | May be lost |
| Chats on logged-in devices | Usually still visible |
| Your account | Unaffected |

Resetting the PIN creates a new backup from now on. New messages work normally and your account is not affected. What you may lose is older chat history that was only in the old backup and is not on any device you still use. That is the trade-off of encryption: the same protection that stops others reading your chats also stops anyone, including Meta, recovering them without the key.

## How do I set the new PIN up safely?

1. Open Messenger, go to Settings, then Privacy and safety, then End-to-end encrypted chats, and look for the message storage or secure storage option.
2. Choose to reset or set a new PIN and follow the steps on screen.
3. Pick a PIN that is not your birthday, phone number or a repeated digit.
4. Save the PIN in a password manager, or write it down and keep it somewhere private at home.
5. If Messenger offers a recovery code, save that too, separately from the PIN.

Menu names change between app versions, so if you cannot find the setting, search for "secure storage" or "encrypted chats" in Messenger's settings search. After resetting, send a test message in an encrypted chat and check that it appears on your other devices.

## Does this affect my WhatsApp chats?

Messenger's encrypted backup is separate from WhatsApp, which has its own backup and its own optional encrypted backup password. Resetting a Messenger PIN does not change your WhatsApp chats.

## What common mistakes should I avoid?

- Resetting before checking other devices.
- Paying someone who says they can decrypt chats.
- Reusing a simple PIN.
- Not saving the recovery code.

Choose a new PIN that is not your birthday or a simple pattern, and store it in a password manager. If you are worried someone else knows your Facebook password, change it and turn on two-factor authentication, which Facebook's How two-factor authentication works on Facebook page explains.

## How do I keep the account safe while I sort this out?

- Never share a login code, password or backup code with anyone, including people who say they work for Meta, the police or a recovery service.
- Make sure the email address and phone number on the account are ones you still control, and remove any you do not recognise.
- Turn on two-factor authentication where the platform offers it, ideally with an authenticator app, and keep your backup codes somewhere offline.
- Log in only from the official app or by typing the address yourself, not from links in messages, comments or ads.
- Keep screenshots of every notice, email and step you take, with dates, in case you need them for a review or a report.
- Make one careful attempt at each official step rather than many rushed ones, because repeated failed attempts can trigger extra checks.

## When It Is Safer to Get Expert Help

Ask for help before you appeal if the account matters to your income, your business or your memories, if you have already had one appeal rejected, or if you cannot tell whether the problem is a bug, a restriction or a hack. That is where most avoidable losses happen.

- You think someone else set or changed the PIN.
- Chats disappeared after an unknown login.
- You need old messages as evidence for a report or legal case.
- Someone is offering to recover or decrypt your chats for money.

### Can Meta reset it for me?

No. Meta cannot recover your PIN because it protects your encrypted backup. You can reset it yourself in Messenger, but older backed-up history may be lost.

### How many attempts do I get?

Messenger limits how many times you can try a PIN. Check the screen for the number of tries left and stop before you use them all.

### Can a hacker use my PIN?

They would also need access to your account. If you suspect a hack, change your Facebook password and turn on two-factor authentication.

### Can you recover chats?

No one can decrypt your chats without the PIN or recovery key. We can help you check other devices and secure your account.

### Will my friends see that I reset the PIN?

Messenger may show a notice in some chats that your security details changed, which is normal when keys change. It does not show your PIN or reveal any messages. If a friend asks, you can confirm it was you.

### Can AwareXone check my case before I appeal?

Yes. AwareXone offers a free case review. Send us what you see on screen and what you have already tried, and an expert will tell you whether to appeal, wait or take another route. We never ask for your password or codes.
